The way the animals are brought up?
Precisely. Just because you have one of the "dangerous breeds" doesn't mean that your dog is mean. My sister has 3 Rottweilers. I can assure you that they are by no means aggressive because they weren't raised that way, but I still wouldn't suggest tying to break into her house.

What about deer? They are more "common" here. What would be the result at say 60mph? Still a lot of damage? Does it make a difference if my car is lower and a wedge?
Imagine hitting a horse. As already mentioned a lower car will put the deer into your windshield.

Here in Kentucky I have seen a fair share of deer collisions (lots of woodland). They have ranged from a totaled car and the deer running off to both being mangled messes in the end. Interstates are the worst. I've seen some ugly accidents caused by deer on the interstate. But if it is a semi that hits it then it is usually just a red smear on the pavement and a dented fender.

Then you get cases like this:

Deer Jumps Into Kentucky School Bus
More than a dozen students were injured on their way to school Friday morning after a deer ran into the side of their school bus. The accident occurred in Eastern Kentucky, near the West Virginia line.

The children and the driver say they saw the deer running beside the full bus before it jumped up into the window. The impact shattered windows and sent glass flying onto the dozens of students inside. In all, 14 students were taken to hospitals for injuries they received from the flying glass.

The injuries were said to be minor, mostly cuts and scrapes from the broken glass. The injured students were treated and released. There were 18 others on the bus who were not injured.

I realise that all dogs can be dangerous (well barring those little rat things, they don't have big enough jaws to do anything)
Honestly, you would be amazed. My wife's chihuahua has been known to put Labradors and German Sheppards in their place. Small dogs have a Napoleonic complex and can be all the more vicious to compensate.

Fortunately, they kick away very easily.

The way the animals are brought up?
It is all in upbringing. A violent dog can be broken like a horse given the proper training. Occasionally you have dogs that have natural temperaments that cannot be undone, but most attacks are from dogs that weren't expected to act that way.

I know too many people who have dogs that get triggered by something like another dog, a male human, etc and the owner just says, "He just doesn't like men, but he is OK." NO!!! You get them in behavioral training. End of story.

We have a friend that got a lab from a rescue and within her first week she noticed that he tries to show dominance over other male dogs, and if they don't immediately give in he starts nipping at their necks. He starts training next week. It seems like innocent animal instinct, but if it isn't addressed it can lead to eventual violence.

The problem in America is that nearly everyone wants a pet. It's the same mentality as the home ownership thing. Everyone thinks they should be able to do it to, but then many fail when it comes to the responsibility that comes with it.

There is no such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners.

Riding with the coach drivers in Alberta, they said that if you see a caribou in front of you suddenly, the best thing you can do is floor the gas and duck. If you're lucky, it will bounce up when it hits the bonnet and go over or into the cant rail, and if you're not so lucky, then it will come through the screen but slide over your head, at which point you can A) evacuate your bowels and B) hit the brakes so it slides out again.

Drives said that if you brake (with the 'rigid arms pushing yourself back into the seat' stance) it more often than not just scoops them up and delivers them into your face. Two tonnes of reindeer meat only tastes good in small portions on a fondue stone (at the Caribou House restaurant, Banff. :) )

What does a Racing Driver do if they're in the middle of a race and they need the Toilet?
I was thinking the other day, what would happen if they have to sneeze a couple of times during a race, maybe even while trying to pass a slower car. Maybe this could be an excuse for Hamilton if he didn't get pole! :p

I just heard a very nice description for a Stereo HI FI thing on television, during the show without a trace, so it's American English, I guess. It's two words and it sounds funny.

Care to guess what it is?

Diego, don't look it up using google or wiki! :p

I have a question pertaining to my health.

Every week day I go to work and have at least two 20oz mountain dews. I'm really getting concerned, in some part due to the fact that I can't stop myself. It has become both a habit and in some way an addiction. At 75 cents a bottle it's quite a deal, but in the end I think it's bringing me down.

How bad of an impact can this have on my health? Is there anything I can do to help myself? I honestly cant stop drinking it.

75 cents a bottle? Damn, that's good. For 20 oz.?

Umm... anyway.. how about you only drink one a day?

It’s pretty easy to not drink it – just bring a couple bottles of water, and don’t bring change for the vending machine.

Having that amount of sugar and caffeine every day isn’t a good idea. According to the Pepsi website, one 20 oz bottle of Mountain Dew has 77 g of sugar. Two bottles is 154 g, which is an astounding amount of sugar – the World Health Org recommends no more than 48 g per day.

You can check out the citations on Wikipedia for the health problems associated with too much caffeine and sugar.

Ask me how I got diabetes... c'mon... ask me?

About two liters of Coca-Cola a day for a couple of weeks, during the summer heat, during a very stressful period of my life working the purchasing department. Played merry hell with my metabolism, resulting in hyperglycemia, making me really irritable, prone to pissing a lot and subject to mood swings.

Finally landed me in the hospital for one week experiencing sugar withdrawal symptoms and losing about thirty pounds of weight. Hypoglycemia, which often results when you're taken off of sugar and given a strict no-sugar diet in order to stabilize your sugar levels, is something you don't want to experience. The gnawing hunger, the dizziness... ugh.

Drink Gatorade. And water. Lots of water. Spending extra money on bringing a thermos to work saves you on buying soda at the vendo-matic and saves you the hassle of becoming dependent on insulin the rest of your life.

Of course, you could always drink diet, but too much soda is still bad for your electrolyte balance.

I think that's a pretty good motivation for me to stop, especially considering that's almost exactly how I am. Tomorrow I'll try just one mountain dew and go from there.

:scared:

I suggest limiting yourself to one can and water. If you really need the taste, try going diet for a while.

Relying on soda for your hydration, especially if you're a desk jockey, is risky business.

It's already had quite an impact on my body, so the next step would probably be diabetes.

I'm always tired, I have trouble concentrating, i've gained some noticeable and uncomfortable weight, and my stomach is a literal acid pit. Time to stop, this is ridiculous.

Well, keep your heart rate up for a good 30 minutes a day would be good.Drink plenty of water and get some rest. Diet soda doesn't do anything but makes it worst. Just stay off soft Drinks for 2 months and just stay active.

Us Brits get advised on having a daily limit of 80g.

There is a lot of weight from the entire setup required for making a 4WD transmission work. Also, it is banned in some forms of motorsport for the traction advantage it gives, but mainly the weight issue, and the added complexity of the system that can compromise the reliability of the race car (with nearly double the parts). In rally events, the traction is ideal, but on the road, 2WD works fine.

My wife wants to buy this for our kids but I'm not terribly sold on it. Thoughts?

Edit: If I decide to concede the battle, I'll be picking it up in 15 hours, so hurry up with the opinions. :p

Get a couple pieces of wood and nail them together.

safety not guaranteed

I've already run the numbers to build one myself, albeit larger, of course, and for the price of this one I could buy the 2x4's. :scared:

If I build it, it'll need a "Use at your own risk" sticker on it. Either that or it'll be able to withstand a direct hit from a tactical nuclear missile. Depends on how I feel that day.

It looks like something my kids would have taken a look at, said "ooh, cool!" and then abandoned.

Yeah, the ROI on things like that is pretty dismal. ;)

The precise reason for my indecision. Looks like I'm leaning even more towards no.

^ROI?

So there's a fire in the Santa Cruz mountains right now... it's blowing the smoke all though the bay area well at least where I am. I could ride my bike to the store about a mile away, but my body would suffer from the smoke. It be better for the planet though. xD

I'm wondering what a true "environmentalist" would do in this situation?

Friend Troubles, I guess you could put this here.

Well, I have little problem with some so-called "Friends" now, and I'd like to vent a bit, I hope it is okay.

The people in question are a girl I knew who attempted suicide, I help her reassure herself that she wasn't ugly, stupid or a sack of potatoes, and her boyfriend, the former I've known for almost a year and the latter since January.

Today (I'm guessing between 5-6PM yesterday), they both removed me from their myspace friends list, blocked me on Skype, and won't return any messages that I've sent.

I'm not mad because they removed me, but I am scared as to what they are about to do.

I was at the girls house today (her BF was there aswell), and nothing seemed out of place, everyone was happy and joking around like usual, until the girl's little brother jumped on her as she was laying on the couch, and put a pillow over her face, she seemed mad because me and her BF were in another room talking and didn't know that she was in trouble. She later became very down and sad, and talked about killing herself, for the first time in atleast 3 months, IIRC.

So I'm scared as to why she and her BF removed me, I've seen this girl at her worst, her best and everywhere inbetween, and I am worried that she is going to attempt suicide again.

Edit: after tracking down their myspace pages, I'm now suspecting that her BF is insecure with me being her friend, as I found out he was with one of her older BF's, which he "Asked" her (more like threatened with ending the relationship) to remove, although she didn't talk to him.

Chris.

My father doesn't hear that well anymore. Almost everytime when I tell him something, he doesn't understand me and or hear something completely different from what I said.

He, and others in his situation, have a 50% 50% change of guessing the right thing.

Why is it that people like him always hear something different from what is being said? Why can't he guess what is being said? No, he always misinterpret what I say.
Is there also something wrong with his brain or is it that he hears what his brain wants to hear and thus always hear the wrong thing?

I don't think they will "do" anything really and even if they have removed you from myspace its no big deal although I don't see what you have done wrong!

I think it's because people hear what they WANT to hear, I do this all the time, LOL. If people can't hear the words clearly, they have to guess what you are saying, using their imagination. Tell him to either get some hearing aids or learn to lip read, it's worth it. There's so much less confusion when you can actually hear the sounds that are being pronounced.

It could also be possible his ears need some excess earwax washed out by a doctor.

Actually, after the initial thing went over, I've figured that they just removed me as the school year is over, and they just want to be left alone while the HS group doesn't meet-up, or that's what I'm hoping, shame though, because I was going to invite them to my pool this summer, but it really doesn't matter anymore.

I'll forget about it anyway when I get my DFP on Wednesday, hopefully.

Chris.
