Why do I have to click the Start button to shut my computer off?

Heard this on television yesterday, I thought it was a brilliant, yet hilarious question
If you're running Vista, right-click on your desktop and select shortcut. In the create shortcut box, type "Shutdown.exe -s -t 00" without the quotes and click next. Give it a name (presumably Shutdown) and you're done.

To make a restart shortcut instead, replace the -s with a -r.

Or, if you're using a better operating system, you just look on the Apple menu where it is listed already, directly below Sleep... and Restart...

Actually, I'm running XP :D

It wasn't really a question of mine though, I just heard it in a commercial yesterday, and I thought: "That guy is so right! Why must we do it?"

Out of curiosity: why are seatbelt arrangements in certain cars (i.e.: 2007 Toyota Sienna) asymmetrical? For the car in brackets, there are doors on either side, but the seatbelt for the left-hand seat (sitting in the car) originates from the B-pillar, and the seatbelt for the right-hand seat is located on its shoulder.

I would assume that for a van it would be so that you could fold the passenger seat (and all the other seats, save for the driver) all the way down to make a flat loading area.

Huh, I thought it was kinda common knowledge that you can press the power button on a modern computer and have it shut down by itself. I know ATX motherboards do this, not sure if manufacturers have moved on to a newer motherboard type that doesn't (for whatever reason).

All computers I ever had, with the exception of one laptop, have this feature - you can, I think, also program it to enter sleep-mode instead.

Still, I feel safer doing it the official way. :p

Yeah, when I first got my PC and ran through the XP setup it asked me what I wanted it to do when I hot the power button.

I have it pop up the Shutdown menu, so if it is an accident I don't lose anything.

I go into the Control Panel and set the power button to "Do Nothing" on PCs I deliver, because most of my customers, on coming up to a computer that's asleep, will hit the power button first, and wonder why it turned on and immediately shut down.

Ok... everytime I buy a cell phone I have to enter all the damn numbers. (thank god I don't have "a lot") Anyway, I had be using my touch as a backup... Needless to say both are erased. So, I'm starting over. I'm considering using an online source to keep track of my numbers like Yahoo contacts, but I'm seriously paranoid about security... What's your guys take on using something like Yahoo contacts? Thanks

Btw, iTunes uses either yahoo contacts or windows contacts to upload to the ipod. So, I guess it would be one of those two...

Well, yeah I'd do that, but the whole reason for online is that it's ALWAYS in one place it can't get erased or missed placed.

Some things get deleted for inactivity though.. Hard copy in hand and on the PC is better. It wont get deleted, and if you lose place of it. Just use the search function on your computer. It'll find it fairly quickly.

No phone software available to sync it to the PC? Even if the software isn't gonna sync to a new phone, you could copy and paste to the new phone's equivalent software.

Also, there's stuff available to sync into Outlook, assuming you have Outlook. It usually defaults to your Contacts folder, but it can be set for a subfolder if you treat your phone's book differently from your mail contacts, which most of us do.

Nope, no phone software. I don't do Outlook period... at least from what I've heard about it.

I take it you (or your phone) don't use the memory card? Even if my new phone doesn't use the same card as my old phone my local AT&T store will copy the data over for me.

It's CDMA not GSM, there isn't any sim card involved. Or if we're talking about a different things, I don't think my phone can keep the address book on the mem card. Would've been nice though.

Well, that is different then.

It would be nice if phones had an easy way to transfer this data from one to another on your home PC, because I never sync anything to my PC.

My mobile devices and my PC have different functions for me so the data I need is never exactly the same.

I got sunburnt at Brands on Sunday, and now my chin is very sore. It's almost as though the skin has burnt off, because it looks a bit like dried blood, rather than the red of a burn. It hurt when I put the aloe-vera after sun on, but not when I used vaseline intensive care on it.

Should I just let it heal itself, or is there something better which I can use to help aid the healing process?

Aloe is the best thing I've found, honestly. You can keep trying that, or look for some arnica gel. My wife swears by that for healing bruises quickly - it seems to stimulate blood flow and the removal of damaged tissue. That might help regenerate the skin more quickly.

But vibration is a different issue. If you're talking about a pulsing that slows down as the car slows, then you have an uneven rotor surface

No, I'm familiar with that and had my rotors turned earlier this year. I'm talking about a physical vibration accompanied by a noise that sounds about like a trumpet player would make if he tried to play a pretend trumpet.

I haven't heard or felt the vibration in week or so, so I think it was either caused by rust that had accumulated on the surface getting rubbed off, or the lubrication has made its way around the pin and things are working properly again. Either way, the symptom is gone.

I had a friend who got quite crispy on his trip down to LA (with some amazing lines, I might add). I guess the only way to deal with it is just to suck it up and maybe use a little aloe for some relief. I guess he was also using a bit of some other kind of lotion to moisten the skin a little. I know I never use anything when I get burnt.

Maybe Tylenol might help?

Yeah, I was going to suggest that. I got sunburned in Hawaii and my pharmacist brother immediately suggested Tylenol. He said it was actually the first thing recommended for any pain.

It took the sunburn from making a shirt unbearable to only hurting if something rubbed on it rough.

When going into Google, is there any way to erase the history you've searched for?

I've been searching for some articles on things when it comes to relationships and such, and I really want it to be confidential, if my parents start talking about it with me, that's just too embarassing (don't worry, it's not about pr0n, I just have my own questions incase of relationships and sex, we all have, right? ;))

BTW, I'm using Firefox

Hurm. Does Firefox use cookies? If so, delete them. Delete your cache. Delete any temporary internet files. Usually that gets stuff.

I'm just guessing though.

Of course I have had Google auto-fill stuff that I had never searched for before.

Wait, didn't Firefox has the option which deletes both your cookies and private files of your browser when you close them? Thats how I did mine and thats why there is no history on my Firefox! :dopey: (unlike IE )

Being the absolute computer n00b, where can I find cookies?

The bakery.

Sorry.

Um, I don't use Firefox, but it should be in your Firefox settings or options to delete or turn off cookies.
