Put yourself in this situation.

Final lap , your down to 3rd or 4th place , approaching the checkered flag , there's cars 2-3 wide fighting for finish line , your drafting ( whatever track has a straight-a-way finish ), no-where to pass , no chance of winning , so you draft an on-line friend , give him a love tap , the boost propells hims him to victory , all good , or is it ? . You get pm'd from friend telling you thanks for the tap and the victory you helped him get ( cool ) . You also get pm'd from another racer that was in the race questioning , " why did you have to interfere with the finish and push the other guy for the win ? " I simply replied , he was an on-line friend , we have helped each other in the past on various ocassions. Friends help friends , right or wrong ? Pm'd Mr. racer back and ask him what he would have done , he replied "sorry , I guess I would have done the same thing. Is this really fair , don't most of us do this , especially on a track like Daytona oval , where if 2 cars get hooked up with each other , you can leave the rest of the field sitting in your dust.

Is this a good or bad practice , opinions please ,

To me this is bad sportsmanship, Sure your helping your mate but it's unfair on the other player, Woudl you do that in real life though? I guess you wouldnt i aint having ago but i dont find that fair on the other guy and if i was him would not have apoligised. Just make sure you dont do that to me when im racing for the lead because you either win or you loose and it's down to how good you race not how you get help from other drivers, Just remember to be fair

I personally don't agree with bump drafting, it's using another car as an unfair advantage to gain more of a lead. I believe in strictly no contact with other cars in a race, obviously minor taps can't always be avoided in hard fought races, but intentionally bumping another car is not on in my opinion.

I see your point , but bump drafting is done in NASCAR , and it's legal , except for in corners , for obvious readons

Gran Turismo is far from Nascar, The fact is it's an unfair advantage to the other driver, Even in Nascar a drivers friend would not tap him to win the lead,

Thats a good point. NASCAR isn't really a valid argument to use, in as far as Gran Turismo is concerned :indiff:

your friend and the other driver may have been having a good battle between each other where the lead kept changing between them, along comes you and hands the win too him. i would have left them alone myself.

why not its a nascar track?

Yup, I agree with everyone else...you should have just left them to it.

As I said....thats MY PERSONAL opinion. Everyone to their own I guess.

OP Didnt mention anything about a Nascar track, He said a track where the finish line has a straight, Nascar only came up because he said it was a valid reason

Nascar got brought only to prove that bump drafting is 100 % legal.

I've occasionally played the bump-draft game, but usually I don't. There are a few drivers here I feel comfortable doing it with. Also, when I do it, I always make sure I give a very gentle bump - something which a real car could actually handle without falling apart. Even then I rarely do it. Last week I was driving with another GTP racer and we were both doing well at Daytona oval 600. He got tapped by another racer into a wall just ahead of me, so I bumped him back into the lead. It was a great race.

In general however, I prefer the leap-frog drafting approach. More elegant, requires more skill and planning, etc.

If I'm in the same situation with a friend, I'd do the same thing. Good work on putting your friend in victory lane!

My opinion of course!

Drafting and passing without any contact is the most legitimate way of racing. It's the tuning element in the GT series that wins races, not relying on another car to help you along. Just because two people are friends in a race and agree to bump draft to gain an advantage, doesn't make it OK to do, because it's unfair on the rest of the players in the game.

Tell that to the punters and their friends , will they listen , uuuuuh no.

Let me add an ingredient to the original post , same scenario ,but now this time your friend or a fellow GTP are duking it out with a known punter , who earlier in the race punted you . Now, do you help your friend ?

I can see and agree with both sides of this discussion.

One the one hand you want to be fair, it's an online racing game, nothing is really on the line aside from pride.

On the other hand, in Real Auto Races this accepted, and even encouraged by team owners and sponsors.

Are we are simulating the "Real" races?

Punters are notoriously bad drivers. so I would expect my friend to be more than capable of out-witting the punter and winning without my intervention. The way I look at it is like this, if someone has to punt another person in order to win, then by default they've already lost before the race even starts.

Contact as well as damage is part of racing, bump drafting takes skill to do without wrecking your car or the other car. Nothing is wrong with doing it, why would there be if there is ample opportunity to do it. drafting is good in it's own right, i prefer to cleanly slipstream, but in a video game what are the odds of that happening with these idiot drivers all over the place. I've only bump drafted once, that was because a guy go knocked by other drivers so i tapped him so he could get up to speed, then let him use my wake u slip stream. im not racing for money here, just out to have fun and enjoy the game.

Fake racing. Sweet.

It's all a conspiracy guys, they aren't really racing.

BTW, I'm not a NASCAR fan either, but that was just stupid.

I'll agree with you on that part of your post, because mistakes can and often do happen in racing sims and real life racing, resulting in pile ups. having said that, if any contact is deemed intentional by a driver in real life, then the driver at fault is disqualified from the race. Simillar penalties should be put implace in GT5, as it's classed as a real driving simulator.

Well, not always, if they do it more than once, then yes, but just one tap? No 9 times out of 10, they will get a warning and a fine.

I will try and find other association rules, but these were the first ones I thought of.

Edit: Wait I misread your post you said intentional contact. I posted under the thought that you said unintentional.

ah ha, so thats how you got distracted and misread my previous post, by watching women jumping around in short skirts :)

It shouldn't be about the winning, so interferences shouldn't be made. It's a game and should be about having fun, simple.

I think that bumping someone else across the line to a win is a little bit naughty, but not something anyone should be damned to hell for. But bumping in the early to mid stages of a race can in fact help make the race more interesting; eg. Say a guy has built up enough of a lead that it is near impossible to catch him on your own, but you have a friend right there with you chasing him down. Now if you bump each other to close that gap then thats cool and would give the races a little more drama.

Personally I'll bump draft people for the first few laps to help close any such gap, but once I cross the line at the start of the last lap its every man for themself.

Forgive me for going a bit offtopic here but they use normal bikini bottoms or tight shorts. ;)
