Sorry for ranting, but I've been getting more and more stressed with one little bit of "Prologue" for a couple of weeks now and just need to vent.

The 'Ghosts' are my biggest gripe. There's no easy way to get rid of the damned things. You've got to exit the section and reenter every single time.

Its frustrating, time consuming, not to mention that I've never seen a 'ghost' car in real life, so its highly distracting to me and extremely unrealistic!

I hope to God that the full version of GT4 has a global option to turn them all off throughout the game (PLEASE PD!). That way, those who want ghosts can have them, while those who don't aren't going to get annoyed like me.

okay, I'll stop venting now.

:)

Loving Prologue, but hating the ghosts.

I like the ghosts... it helps a lot improving my best lap times and even the 0-400 etc... But to turn it on and off would be a great and "gentle" idea.

OMG - i didn't know that. I HATE the ghosts as well, very distracting when you're running a close time over and over. Thanks for the tip!

hehe i havnt played prologue, but after reading the first post, i thought that they took away the 'select = ghost toggle". what i usually do in gt3 is have it off on major sections, then on the straight, turn it on to see how well or bad im doing. its good to see if youre accelerating well through the exit of the turn.

I love the ghosts. They save time. When your ghost is ahead by a pretty big margin you can just exit the race and retry. It's not like when you finish a whole lap you realise you're too slow.

can't belive PD hasn't gotten the "ghosts" right yet... in F355 challenge for the dreamcast, ghosts would dissapear entirely if you got too close to them, and fade back in if they were more than 2 cars away.

In Project Gotham Racing 2, I use ghosts in races that have time limits so I can use it sort of as an opponent and do my best to beat it to the finish line. I love ghosts.

I usually don't even bother with that.. even with the ghost turned off, it's location is still marked on the track map, with a yellow dot. Lets you know exactly where it is (unless it's very close to you, then the dots blend together).

Boo!

I fear someone may have trouble with ghosts. RBT, I don't know if your take on them is like "I cannot knock this ghost off the track" or "this son of a b*tch keeps passing me up" or what. How long have you been playing racing games, RBT? Dig this, man. Ghosts aren't intended to harm you or anything like that. They are more like Man's best friend (though I'm actually scared of dogs). Not meant to hurt. And if a ghost keeps passing you up in license tests and time trials, it doesn't mean that the driver is always out to beat you. RBT, I'm going to tell you how important ghosts can be.

I can remember when I turned 20 last year, that I was racing Gran Turismo 3 in the Super License final, with the Toyota GT-One at Monaco. I wasn't expecting this license test to be damn near impossible to beat, much less for gold. This test proved that you'll need that ghost to learn from your mistakes while racing. When you don't clear the test in time, you can restart and see your ghost. The job here is to do better on the track until you finally clear the test or time trial with a great lap time. Then when you want to do better, you can always race it again after smoking the past ghost. And if you want to save your ghost file, you can always do that to aim for a better time. I hope you don't think I'm putting you down, but ghosts are only there to prove you can be a better Gran Turismo racer than you are now. When you finally prove it to a ghost by beating it, you've shown the ghost something to remember for life. But if you don't move or perform fast enough, it will always get the better of you. So, they are there to help. And if you just can't make your run better, then you'll need to refine your skills to take down any opposition in GT games. 👍

Ghosts certainly don't work for everyone. I focus on the ghost's presence and wind up killing my times.

It's a distraction for some people, John.

Don't get me wrong, my University of Houston Cougar. I know one of my mottos is "account for everyone," but they've helped me. They do p*ss me off when I'm doing as best as possible and it blows me away like I can't drive worth crap. I think in Project Gotham Racing 2, if you want maximum Kudos, you'll need to drive as well as the ghost racer. And not to put down GT and the PS2, but since the XBOX has that XBOX Live deal, you'll be able to download ghost files just to see what's the best way around a track. You can do it probably without having to download on your computer then to your PS2, then on to a Memory Card.

The main point is that they will tick everyone off, but from my example of the racing at Monaco with the Super License Final, you STILL need a ghost to help you out. If you don't need it, don't access it. But you might need one if you're not doing very well. The only exception for this is probably those Accelerating and Braking tests. Some should be able to finish that successfully. And in GT3, not only do you have to stop it successfully, you have to jump off the line successfully for the best time.

The reason I keep them on.

Just look at the split times if you want to see how far back/ahead you are, or check the minimap.

And to JohnBM01, yeah I agree completely, ghosts can help you learn from your mistakes and see in what sectors you're losing time. However, on some Prologue tests (like the cone slalom in the NSX) the ghost is a pain in the butt, particularly if you use the bumper cam, because it obscures your view of the cones. :irked:

Me too, I discovered this possibility by accident! I thought there was something wrong in GT Prologue.

My question is the following: does this work also in GT3 with the driving force steering wheel. I don't have it here and can't test it before this weekend, but it seems to me that it doesn't work with that steering wheel in GT3 Pal-version.
Or do you have to push on another button perhaps?

Press select while racing.

Thank-you! That helps so much!

I don't recall that option from the previous games, but I'm so glad to make its acquaintance!

Ross (now even happier than ever with GT!)

Okay, so now that I've got that gripe out of the way, how about a fix for that 10 second penalty thing in Prologue?

Please tell me we'll be able to switch that thing off!!!

Ta,

Ross.

No probs :)

The 10 second penalty cant be removed, if you put the difficulty setting to easy theres less chance of getting the penalty. Later versions of GT dont have it anymore.

Why? After a couple of days getting used to Prologue's handling, I never get penalties anymore. I can't even remember what speed it reduces you to (50 km/h?) Anyway, it's there to help you drive better. You should never be hitting the walls or other cars that hard (or, in reality, at all). Remember you can get away with murder in GT because there's no car damage, so they introduced this. In reality hitting anything hard enough to impose a penalty would actually have you retiring from the race with a totaled car.

But yes, they've replaced it in GT4 with some blurring/disorientation or something (apparently this is in the new demos?). But still, stop hitting things!!! :)

Exactly. "Select" button feature is nice though. Sometimes, I lose sight or my focus due to ghosts, so it'll be nice to be able to turn it off!

I love the Ghosts too, for a reason not much stated yet:

I always use ' incarview' when racing. The ghosts give me a chance to actually see the cars, sometimes there are nice details like brakelights reflecting on your exhaustpipe(s)...

Exactly, or it gives you a chance to see yourself drifting in the replay of your fastest lap 👍
