I've been experimenting with into-the-sun silhouettes. What do you think?

Trying to get the hang of my 85mm on full frame. Depth of Field is ridiculous, but when you get it right, it's crazy-sharp. This is my daughter.

And a 100% crop of her eye...

Got pretty wet at the weekend, but it was worth it. Good fun, a relaxed event with some cool cars and mad drivers charging up a too-narrow hill.

The changeable (but generally bad) weather was challenging for those of us without weathersealing. It was pretty dark under the cover of the trees.

Fantastic shots man. Out of curiosity, what are you using to power the photoblog? I like how you have the independent galleries running through it.

Thanks!

The photoblog is Pixelpost. The independent galleries are just inserted into the directory structure by Lightroom. But it works well with visitors to have them arranged that way as it makes sense.

Boiling Sky

20080705194939_5d-4224-edit.jpg

I noticed this view, and just had to shoot it. Thanks to Canon for the Image Stabilisation that allowed me to shoot at one fifth of a second, handheld, as a tripod would not have been usable. Thanks also to Adobe, for their Shadow recovery tool, to bring out a little detail in the trees and the road.

Camera: Canon EOS 5D with 24-105 F/4 IS L
Focal Length: 32 mm
Exposure: 1/5 sec @ F/9, ISO 500 (Flash: Not Fired)

The example of your daughters eye is amazing. Looks like you would have used a macro lens unless you saw the full original picture.

The other shots look amazing also. 👍

Love that sky shot Giles 👍

Also, you captured the wheel blur on that Caterham, or whatever that car is, really really good

Wet Man Watching

20080712190739_5d-3677.jpg

Motorsports marshals are an odd lot. Keen to go watch racing like the rest of us, but happy to take on responsibility for whatever disaster may unfold in front of them. Often in mortal danger, never for any pay. Good on you lads! At least this dude, at a hill climb in Doune, was dressed for the occasion.

Camera: Canon EOS 5D with 70-200 F/2.8 IS L
Focal Length: 200 mm
Exposure: 1/50 sec @ F/2.8, ISO 640 (Flash: Not Fired)

Rozel Garden

20080615182638_5d-3062-edit.jpg

This is my grandmother's garden, in Jersey. Phsyically vast, and quite exerting to get from bottom to top, my children loved exploring it, and we were there at the right time of the year, for there was plenty to shoot.

Camera: Canon EOS 5D with 16-35 F/2.8 L II
Focal Length: 16 mm
Exposure: 1/125 sec @ F/8, ISO 100 (Flash: Not Fired)

Great shots GilesGuthrie, it seems to me from the first photos to your last set, your photography/shots seems to get better. 👍

Competitive Blacksmith
Captured at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, this is competitive blacksmithing (blacksmithery?) The contestants have to make as many perfect horseshoes as they can in an hour. Intense work.

mmmhh... how come I have not commented a thing on your work? I was pretty sure I had.

The night shots are awesome, you have great composition, and your hillclimb pictures are amazing too, I really liked the very blurred Healy taken from above, with the exact focus in the rear windscreen, very good!

but my fave pic of them all is the racing marshall. that guy is cool. awesome depth of field.

Thanks! I guess you may have commented in The Photography Thread. I tried in vain to extricate lots of posts from there into individual threads.

Hopscotch

The Sunday morning ritual: dads with their children in the play parks while the mothers get a well-earned lie in. The art to urban hopscotch is not in placing the feet in the correct squares, but instead completing the challenge without falling over and cutting oneself on the shards of broken glass. Modern life.

I want a lens like that.

:D Thanks.

I love my 16-35. It's a lens that comes in for a lot of criticism because it's very expensive, but it's totally worth it. Obviously, this shot's a B/W, but the colours you get off it are amazing.

Sorry, couldn't tell you what it is [EDIT: It's a "Cala Lily" (thanks Smallhorses)], but it (like the rest in this post) was in my Grandmother's garden in Jersey.

It's probably not a daisy though.

Fluffy Bee Feeding

This is developing into something of a theme! But the bee was so markedly different to those in the prior shots it was interesting in itself.

My 4-year-old daughter would probably like her walls this colour.

Morning Dew

I think that this is a daisy, but I'm probably wrong. The dew drops are genuine, however.

This tree seemed to be hiding its flowers away. But getting in close revealed some real detailing.
