Go Speed Racer Go!

Well, this one was entirely different from any other movie I've seen, that much is sure. I enjoyed it, once I got used to it. Forget physics; they do not apply to the cars or the races. But if you can suspend your disbelief, you'll find that your senses are pleasantly appealed to with nearly every shot. They've done some neat editing and transitions between shots as well, and who would have expected such solid performances from a cast made up of virtual unknowns and/or partial wash-ups? The kid, Spritle's his name, played by some young'un named Paulie Litt, gives a better performance than most of the adult actors around him. Susan Sarandon as Mom Racer is a perfect fit, and John Goodman as Pops Racer is as stellar here as he always is. Yes, John Goodman is an underrated actor. Watch Speed Racer and you might get it. The various Australian actors were actually pretty good selections for depicting their zany on-screen roles.

Oh, and look for the announcer for the final Grand Prix race (not the one played by Shaft's Richard Roundtree - see what I mean about partial wash-ups? Well, let's face it, Roundtree is a TOTAL washup. But he's funny here. What was I talking about? Oh yeah...) so this announcer looks like Duke! I ain't playin! Anyone else seen it and can back me up here?

Unless that ain't Duke in the avatar, and he's actually selected this unknown-to-me actor to pose as himself, in which case I've made a complete horse's ass of myself haven't I?

7.5 Andertons out of 10. I just found myself having actual fun in a movie theatre this time; it was all I could do to keep from jumping up and cheering. Lame, perhaps, but that's why I go to the movie theatre in the first place: to be entertained to the point where I can no longer in full control of myself. I'm quite sure that if you wait to rent this one, you'll probably lose something in the translation. Pity, that.

He didn't miss the thread. This is just how Anderton lets us know about his thoughts on the movie. He does this with almost any movie he sees.

Oh, I see. Well never mind, then just move on with it. :)

That's Ben Miles - who is indeed in Speed Racer - who plays the character Patrick in the original (not the American version thereof, widely held to be utter crap) "Coupling". Duke selected Patrick as he quite likes the character.

Still, damn good spot there.
