Today (june 14th, 2003) I received an answer from Polyphony. I sent them a mail last month with some questions. I didn't expect it, but they answered. Therefor I will post the questions and answers. I don't know who they came from. The mail was sent from the main adress at Polyphony so I don't know who gave these but they are correct and that's all that matters. I plan to send another mail in 2 months to keep an eye on the development.

How long have you been working on the game?

We've been busy with the development for 3 years now. So we started with develloping GT4 6 months prior to the release of GT3.

What are the main improvements of GT4 when compared with GT3?

It was difficult to improve GT3 but there are some nice improvements.
Graphically there are some changes but not that much. It still looks familiar but there is much improvement in the details, especially on the side of the road. Also, GT3 suffered from pop-up but that's history from now on.

The gameplay has been altered dramatically. The car responds more to exterior factors. It will now respond to the strength of the wind. You'll barely notice this on a regular track, but when you're driving a rally car in the mountains you'll certainly feel it. The weather can also change during a race, so it can suddenly start to rain or snow. Also the tyres have become more important. In GT3 they wore out, but always at the same rate. Tyre damage will depend on : Weight of the car, Downforce, accelleration forces, climate conditions, ground temperature. GT4 also has more cars and tracks than GT3.

How many cars will be in the game?

That's not certain yet. At this moment we have about 550 cars. We have enough licenses to put about 4.000 cars in the game. We'll just keep building cars untill the game is released. One person needs 4 days to build a car from scratch. We have a team to make the cars that includes 10 people. 5 of them are constantly travelling to measure sounds etc. So there's 5 people left so we can build about 5 cars per week (ROXA's note : strange mathematics there). We hope the definitive game will count about 1200 cars. Another change will be that we will not only feature new cars, but all kinds of cars. We have modern cars, oldtimers and also prototypes or cars we won't see for another 2 or 3 years.

How many tracks will be in the game?

We currently have 80 tracks, most of which can be driven the other way around as well. The tracks are almost ready. There are a few more we would like to include but that won't take much more work. A major difference with the previous editions is that we now also have tracks which exist IRL. In GT3 this was only Monte Carlo (ROXA's note : What about LSR?) but now we also have tracks like Monza, Silverstone, etc. Also some tracks from the early GT games are reappearing, like the High Speed Ring. We had lots of emails from people who missed this track in GT3

How about the tuneability of the cars?

Of course it will be possible to tune your cars. There will be a lot more possibilities than in the previous GT's, but I'm not allowed to speak about it. All I can say is that the racing modification is back. So you can buy a regular car and put racing stickers on it.

There are rumours that it'll be possible to tune your car optically. Is this true?

Sorry, but I'm not allowed to answer this question. All I can say is that you can buy different rims for your car once again and the choice of rims will be a lot bigger than with all the previous installments.

Were you able to get some licences you didn't have before, like Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari?

Unfortunately we didn't get Porsche because Electronic Arts has the rights to that marque. This is no problem because we still have RUF.

We had the license for Lamborghini but for some reason we weren't allowed to use it in Europe. This time we made it, though. You can expect some Lamborghinis in GT4.

We're still trying to make an arrangement with Ferrari. Ferrari wants to be in GT4 and we want Ferrari to be in it, but EA still has a contract with Ferrari for 5 years. If we can include Ferrari we certainly will, even if we have to postpone the release date for it.

There are rumours that there will be exterior damage in GT4. Is this true?

Sorry, but that's not true. It would require too much development. If we have to make a thousand cars, all with vehicle damage, we won't be ready in the next ten years.

Finally, when will it be released?

Here are the release dates :
Japan : October 2003
America : December 2003
Europe : Februari 2004

Thank you Polyphony !

I don't know whether to believe it or not.

80 tracks sounds awesome. I can't wait.

I stopped reading after seeing "IRL". I dont believe any of this. I dont see why someone at PD would stop his work to reply to this one guy, and use the "in real life" abbreviation... I think I smell something...

You may want to pay attention to the bit that says "ROXA's note"...

The original article came from a Dutch magazine, which was posted at GT3Times by Edmar Jaeger. ROXA then translated it - which is why the abbreviations crop up.. Both are genuine guys and I have NO reason to doubt them at all.

Edit: Want the original? :D

I just found a Dutch GT4 site with a nice interview. Too bad for most guys here it`s in Dutch.

Bedankt Polyphony!!

there are also some nice (new) pictures on that site.

Well thank you for clearing that up. I didnt know what ROXA was, and when i saw IRL, i called bull. Now I know better. Gonna keep reading now :)

I would say this is bull****. But I will make an exeption with this one. It came from a magizine and it was published. PD would not be happy to see false facts that a magazine said PD said. Um, I think we have a winner :D

I'll have a Lime Green Lambo Murc please :D If it takes more time to get Ferrari in, I think it will be worth it. Dont know if anyone shares my opinion tho. I know some might not want to wait longer just to have a Ferrari. They didnt say anything about the M's tho :(

If all of that is true then my wants have been filled. I hope the release date is correct too. Hopefully we won't have another GT3 incident.

I agree. ;) By the way, nice avatar. :D

Pretty much covered everything I want too... 80 tracks! 1200 expected cars! Licences for 4000! Lamborghinis! (etc.)

I don't quite get the "I'm not allowed to answer that question" - in response to the visible modification of cars question though...

They dont want to release some of the info right at the moment. I might e-mail them in a month and see if there are any updates. :O

Do they really mean 80 tracks, or are they referring to the fact that each track has a reverse one just like it.

"How many tracks will be in the game?

Covers it...

good to know you continued reading

and most of mine

I hope there not going to wait 5 years to get Ferrari on board:lol:

80 tracks, hope one of them is ''The Green Hell''

T13R took the words right out of my mouth, they may have managed to get lambo but still no word on the BMW's ///M series. Ill be really dissapointed if theres no ///m3's in the final game. If i c an E30 M3 in the bmw lineup however, i know ill be suffereing from insomnia for weeks on end after purchasing GT4.

P.S. thats got to be the "cheekiest avatar ever"

yeh i know it was bad, but i had to say it.

i hope this stuff is true

It better be or I'm gonna be pissed. Lol. :p

It was difficult to improve GT3

Really? I could think of at least 3 billion improvements for it.

The weather can also change during a race, so it can suddenly start to rain or snow.

Doubtful. The only game i've played that had that kind of feature is Grand Prix 3.

We hope the definitive game will count about 1200 cars.

Sounds fun, but will they enlarge our garage, or will we have to suffer like with GT2 again?

We currently have 80 tracks...but now we also have tracks like Monza, Silverstone, etc. Also some tracks from the early GT games are reappearing, like the High Speed Ring. We had lots of emails from people who missed this track in GT3

I really, really want HSR back. GT just isn't GT without it. It's kind of ironic how the game labels itself "The real driving simulator" yet there were only one or two real racetracks in it. If they really included 80 tracks, i certainly hope they added a few more North American tracks, not just Laguna Seca and Sears Point. (Mosport would be entertaining...)

All I can say is that the racing modification is back. So you can buy a regular car and put racing stickers on it.

That's pretty much what the essence of the original GT was, and i certainly hope they'll truly reconsider them in. I hope they'll add diversity, too, like in GT2, but with more possibilities.

and the choice of rims will be a lot bigger than with all the previous installments.

Yeah, that'd be fun.

We had the license for Lamborghini but for some reason we weren't allowed to use it in Europe. This time we made it, though. You can expect some Lamborghinis in GT4.

Riiiight. And monkeys will fly out of my butt. Imagine how the execs at Lambo will feel when they see EVOs and WRXs beating on their pricey, not exactly stellar supercars. If they add older cars, i surely hope the Miura is in.

Ferrari wants to be in GT4

Same thing as with Lamborghini. In order to make sure Ferrari is in and is pleased, they'll have to make their cars unbeatable... Surely a modest, tuned RX7 can't outrun a tuned 360 Muchocrap, right?

We'll see this winter.

mmhh... half of this might be true, half of it seems like crap. I dont know. but it sounds real interesting and over all, FUN FUN FUN. lez hope ALL this is true, and not just bellshet.

Cano

So they have 550 cars now. and they are hoping to get 1200 cars when it releases. but they said they can only do 5 cars per week.. and the release date for japan is october of 2003?

odd..

If that info is true, I'm gonna get spoiled.
My grades in college will decrease; I will be forced to quit my job, because of non attendance. My girlfriend will dump me as a result of not giving her attention... but H

ll yeah I'm gonna be alright.

Just kidding.

Seriously I'm going to quote a post from another forum which many of you might have read already. This info kind of relates in some points

Been on vacation during this week, and I've been without internet access. Which is why you get this info now:
During my vacation (No! Make that "ninety minutes into"), I got hold of the september (!) issue of TopGear Magazine. There were no headlines or anything on the front page, I just took the best magazine available - it has a four page article on GT4, from Millbrook. There's no real new info, but it did have some interesting bits of it though:

- People who contributed to the game by showing up their cars will be credited and thanked - alongside with their cars. The models will also feature the license plates from the contributers' cars!

- Smaller automakers have been very keen on getting their cars into GT4, after they heard what happened to TVR in Japan. All small, independent UK makers are represented.

- At the time of writing, oldest car is a black 1949 VW Beetle. However, TG heard mention of the very first Benz to be included

- Bentley, Morgan, Triumph, Lotus F1...yup...Ford RS', AC, Morris...to be continued

- Cars from BTGC (think JGTC, just with a B for "British").

- Did I mention Bentleys? Really old ones?

- Gran Turismo will continue to be made, expect next game on PS3 (words from Mr. Gran Turismo himself)

- Oh, and no Ferraris and Porsches, due to exclusive deals with rival software companies. No mention of Lamborghini, though.

Sorry Freddie I would have asked for the info but, for some reason I'm not allowed to post at your forum.

Does anybody knows the email address for PD.
Who ever wrote those questions pretty much thinks like me, but I will like to hear from them.

Cool. I got to read it in english and dutch. Vrete mijn ondebroken, potverdikkie!

I think it is fake. I once wrote a e-mail message to a game company once, asking if they are going to have a high-definition games anytime soon. They e-mailed me back with the answer NO and had a bunch of legal mumbo-jumbo that forbid me from saying that, or I'll run the risk of being sued.

The "interview" does have some meaty things though. If it is a fake, like I think it is, somebody did a great job.

Yeah well it's nice to hear some news, most of which IS believeable. Not too sure about the lambo ferrari licenses, but as PR says, we can only wait to see

The only part I hope isn't true is the release date for europe:(
