Someone is trying to hack my PC with a back orifice 2000(trojan)...BUT he has failed, my firewall is doing its job. You guys might like to invest in a firewall too :cheeburga

Yeah, me too. I think anyone with an always-on connection should get it protected.

Well.... nobody tries to hack you with a Trojan.... It's a prog that's designed to lure the user to run it of his own accord by using a name that promises something outlandish.
My advice is to avoid any *.exe files that say things like...
"Bandwidth tweaker"
or
"Britany Spears Naked"
and so on. I know a guy through work that is constantly getting killed by trojans (Which is why I block his E-mails) It's just a matter of learning a little internet savvy. (And having a good firewall like yourself ;))

Well they do require some configuration, to allow only what you need to allow. Also, they do impose some performance decrement on your internet connection. And you need to keep them up to date. Otherwise it's pretty much a no-brainer.

I had heard about the content issue, so the connection degradation is the only other real issue? Cool. Cable should take care of that!

Thanks! I'm getting firewall and shouldn't have a problem configing it.

ANOTHER: If I wanted to, I could send UNLIMITED amounts of spam email to anyone, without showing my email address (email bombing)

Not that I do that, but I know how.

Really? What's that for? Stealing credit?

I didnt want to talk about this underground stuff, but what the hell. A credit card generator makes credit card numbers. The one I tried could make visa, mastercard and discover card numbers. I tested the card number and it worked...they are so 1337

No, you dont understand. Trojans are programs that enable you to control someone elses pc from your own. Like: Back orifice, rat, hack a'tack etc

too late for me

A good (software) firewall is Zonealarm or Sygate Personal firewall. The big advantage of these things is that when somebody pings your computer, it doesnt reply or deny the ping, so for the other end it seems like your ip-adres is not in use. They are pretty easy to configure, every program that wants to go on the internet is noticed and you can then give permission to do so, you can choose for this time only, or always. Just be carefull what you let go on the internet and you´le be save.

So what is the best firewall to have? Is it possible to run two firewalls or would that be too much of a drain on resources and/or your bandwidth?

Well i have norton firewall and it works fine, doesnt slow down my pc much

Yeah I have Zone Alarm....not Pro just the free one....it seems to do that job you can let programs be able to act as a server and access the net...really useful for keeping track of what it using the net.

Ok, here it is again:

#1 Best: HARDWARE - you can get a hardware firewall, that comes either just as a fire wall or as a cable/dsl/file router. These are the best, and drain I-Net access the least.

#2. Software: Kinda ho hum depending on the brand you buy. I use black-ice, which seems to be one of the best around. However, some like mcafee firewall MAY be a false sense of security. Because they are so common so, are hacks.

If you run print sharing or file sharing in win98 you NEED a firewall. 2K divients are better, but not the best.

My advice: For the most secure computer: Install linux, or solaris, delete windows, and run both a software and hardware firewall. Of course the only incident I have ever had was someone running a auto-email me bug out of my computer. Luckily my provider was on the ball and shut the connection down before anything really happened.
