My attorney said we were going to offer it and the district attorney would likely not accept it; instead the city attorney offered it and, well, I accepted it. They gave me five points and 20 hours of community service.

And how the hell did you amass a 26 point ticket?

My car does the quarter mile in 13.1 seconds. How the hell could I not amass a 26-point ticket?

I only got five points, so I kept the license. No worries. Happened in Michigan.

I think it's a pretty common misconception that police hate going to court to fight these and that they'll never show. They get paid for going, they schedule all their court dates back to to back to back in one day, go in and get paid their salary (or overtime for doing it). So in fact, they prefer you to take it to court, the judges believe the officer most of the time over the complainant, and they get paid for it.

I got:

Reckless driving = 8pts
Speed 40+ over = 12pts
Speed 25+ over = 6pts

I pled to:

Careless driving = 4pts
Driving without a headlight = 1pt

The headlights were fully functional, it's just a charge you plead to - sort of like defective vehicle (except they wanted to give me careless driving and there's only one one point offense).

ive never even heard of the point system. i dont think we have it in texas. ive had one speeding ticket when i was younger. i was doing 15 over the limit. i wasnt even trying to speed i just went down a big hill and picked up speed and the cop cought me. thats been a while back though. i got deferred ajudication(sp?) and it didnt even go on my record. my friend got one for doing 75 in a 35 once. but it was 2 in the morning and there were no other cars on the road. he tried to claim it was a felony, i doubt that.

My headlights work properly - it's just there for people to plead to. You don't actually get points assessed if your headlights don't work.

The police can't charge you for each an every infraction up to the maximum. If you were 40+ over, that is what you would have been charged with which is the maximum.
Not 25+ over, AND reckless driving, AND 40+ over.
40+over is reckless driving, and the full penalty of 6 points against your license.


Michigan State Points Systems only give 6 points for:

• Manslaughter, negligent homicide, or other felony involving use of a motor vehicle.
• Operating under the influence of liquor or drugs.
• Failing to stop and give identification at the scene of a crash.
• Reckless driving.
• Unlawful bodily alcohol content of 0.10 or more.
• Refusal to take a chemical test.
• Fleeing or eluding a police officer

You certainly didn't commit any of those infractions. So how on Earth, did you accumulate a 26 point ticket, when MANSLAUGHTER is only a 6 point ticket?

i was late for work this morning and about a half mile from work i went over a hill and there was a sherif there, he instantly turned on his lights so i pulled over. he asked me why i thought he pulled me over and i said "i was probobly speeding", he said "i clocked you at 69mph in a 55mph zone" lol. i told him i work right down the road and was late for work and he went to his car for about 10 minuits, he finally came back and said i was honest with him so he will give me a break and he gave me a ticket for failure to obay a traffic signal.



the ticket i got is a way smaller fine and only 2 points on my liscence, the speeding ticket would have cost me over $300.00 and 7 points on my liscence so i got lucky lol 👍

They charge you with every single thing they can in order to have more leverage at plea time. It was double jeopardy - the 25+ over was a city charge, and the 40+ over was a state statute. One of those would have to disappear. The officer who pulled me over also told me there was a state law citing if you were 40 or more over you would receive a reckless driving charge, however my attorney found no such law and in court the officer admitted he had only tacked reckless on because of the speed.

The district attorney told my attorney that she had in fact won cases where they were charging someone with both reckless driving and excessive speeding since the definition of the two crimes are different. I took the plea so we explored that no further.

I don't see what's so hard to believe here, and I'm stunned that Rob doesn't know how they write tickets! (and that Famine doesn't know how they plea them!)

They got me today... red flash light was all I saw .... well not that bad, not even points maybe 30 $ or so, have to wait for the bill...
Once I was speeding in Japan... I think I had about 140- 150 km/h (80 allowed ) and the police stopped me, but they were really cool, we talked a few minutes and that was it... had not to pay anything.... 👍

Yes Doug, I have in fact recieved a major speeding ticket. 96 mph in a 55 mph zone. Lost my license for 90 days. But I wasn't charged with every infraction that leads up to a 96 mph in a 55 mph charge.
I recieved reckless driving, and that was it. (This was in the state of Virginia.)
I've also been charged with DUI. Again, I didn't get charged with each and every violation that led up to it. I just simply was charged with a DUI. (Again in the state of Virginia.)

In the month of March '05, (here in Colorado) I recieved 2 different speeding tickets.
One was for 76 mph in a 50 mph zone, the other was a ticket for speeding 76 mph in a 55 mph zone. (Yes, I must like driving at 76 mph. )

In Colorado, the points system for speeding looks like this:

Speeding = 1 point 1- 4 mph over limit
Speeding = 3 point 5-9 mph over limit
Speeding = 4 point 10-19 mph over limit
Speeding = 6 point 20+ mph over limit

Now both of my tickets were a 6 point infraction, total. I got charged for the 6 points.
I didn't get charged 1 point for 1-4 mph over the limit, and 3 points for 5-9 mph over the limit, and 4 points for 10-19 mph over the limit and finally, 6 points for 20+ mph over the limit, for a total of 14 points, plus reckless driving (which is usuall givin in an instance of excessive speed, (8 pionts)) I was just charged with 6 points.

This is why I'm stunned that you recieved a ticket like this. Never in my experience of recieving tickets, and trust me, I've had plenty, did they ever charge me the way that you have been charged.

Why do you guys have to wait for a bill? When you get the ticket, isn't the amount right on the ticket?

If a policeman writes a ticket for an offence which hasn't occured he WILL lose his job.

It's very common here in the States. As a matter of fact, the ticket forms in many areas have a box where the officer can write what you were actually doing, and a seperate box for what he charged you with. This encourages people to just accept the lesser charges, as they will be charged with the greater offense if they try to fight it.

And I think by 'failure to obey a traffic signal' the officer meant 'failure to obey a speed limit sign' so he wasn't actually charged with something he didn't do, just a lesser version of it.

I tell him it's because my car was in the garage with a flat battery. He then politely tells me that maybe I should fix my car up because the wagon is "too powerful" for me. And gets pissed off because I inform him that I too own a turboed Legacy.
Walks off after telling me to respect the authorities, drive "slowly", and not get upto mischief. 10 solid minutes of my life wasted because of an arrogant pr1ck with nothing better to do.

We don't get a bill. At least not here in Colorado.
When I got my ticket from a State Trooper for speeding 76 in a 55, the fine was writen on the ticket and I could pay the fine by mail.
However, when I got a ticket for 76 in a 50 from a regular police officer, the amount of my fine was not posted on the ticket. I did however have to go to court to recieve my total point asssment and fine.

I can't really explain to you why these tickets are different, maybe because one was for 26 mph over the limit as opposed to 21 over the limit. But that contradicts Colorados point system that I posted above.

Go figure. But usually the fine of the infraction is writen on the ticket unless you are required to appear in court.

I can't explain why I was charged that way either. My lawyer who does traffic tickets for a living thought nothing was amiss, and neither did I. Then again, I was 40 over. The cop told me I was lucky they didn't tow my car.

Dunno about cops over there, but if they can book you for absolutely anything here, they will.

So nothing. This is not the first time it's happenned to me, and it get's pretty annoying.
I can live with "...could I check your licence please..."etc., but he told me he pulled me over because he didn't like the look I gave him. I didn't see him until he pulled me over. My point is pulling me over for something I didn't do isn't on.

So you just ignore them if they ask you a question, like do you know what speed you were going or something? I think that that would make them mad.
