Just be honest! Are you people stupid, if you know you were speeding just tell them. You will get out of or get less of a ticket. Plus if you are honest and call the officer "sir" for males and "officer" for females you will get on the cops good side and they can see that you aren't a bastard.

So nothing. This is not the first time it's happenned to me, and it get's pretty annoying.
I can live with "...could I check your licence please..."etc., but he told me he pulled me over because he didn't like the look I gave him. I didn't see him until he pulled me over. My point is pulling me over for something I didn't do isn't on.

It's a random stop'n'search. He thought he was being funny, but they don't NEED to give you a reason.

cardude2004 - Actually, it's sound advice - in the UK at least. If you admit that you've done anything wrong you are screwed. You don't stand a chance of fighting it. You've admitted to the crime to a law official. Remember the Miranda Rights?

The correct stance to take is conciliatory, yet non-compliant. Let the policeman tell YOU what speed you were doing:

"Do you know why I've pulled you over, sir?"

Bad Responses...
  • "Speeding, I guess."
  • "My driving?"
  • "You're a frustrated, power-crazed Nazi with a tiny penis?"

Good Responses...
  • "I've no idea, officier." - let HIM tell YOU.
  • "I could hazard a guess" - accompanied by a wry smile (careful - wry, not smug) is a risky route to take as they MAY ask you to hazard a guess. If you can pull it off it'll work well. This one is an icebreaker, but depends on the character of the policeman.
  • "My tail-light's not broken again is it?" - this is a nice one. They can get a bit thrown by this.

"Do you know the speed limit here, sir?"

Bad Responses:
  • "Yeah, it's (correct speed limit)." - this instantly invites the responding question "So why were you doing (correct speed limit plus 20mph) then sir?".
  • "Yeah, it's (correct speed limit plus ten)." - this shows that not only do you KNOW you were 20mph over, but that your admitting that your road knowledge is microscopic.
  • "No idea." - Neanderthal answer. Non-committal and, as above, shows you're a retard.

Good Responses:
  • "I'm not sure. I'm not from around here/it's the first time I've been here." - invites slight sympathy. You're a stranger in a strange land and he's caught you doing something wrong. Yes, you SHOULD know the posted limit but you're on unfamiliar territory - you're not an habitual speeder on these roads. THIS WILL NOT WORK IF YOU LIVE LESS THAN 5 MILES FROM THE SCENE.
  • "It's (correct speed limit), isn't it?" - the only answer you can give if you're a local. However, delivered in a questioning tone rather than a statemental one will give you a few points. Your aim is rabbit-in-headlights look.

"Do you know you were speeding/doing (speed limit plus 20)."

Bad Responses:
  • "Yes." - D'oh!
  • "No." - D'oh! Speeding and too stupid to look at your instruments.
  • "Yes but (excuse)" - D'oh! D'oh! D'oh! Speeding and think you have a good reason to break the law. Unless your wife is in labour on the passenger seat.

Good Responses:
  • "Really? Gosh." - another questioning tone. It sounds conciliatory but crucially you aren't admitting to ANYTHING.


You should note that, while all of this is good advice in the UK, it may not work elsewhere. In the UK you should pull over at the first convenient place to do so and GET OUT to speak to the police. In the US you should stay in the car, or risk getting guns/tazers drawn on you.

If the policeman is humourous, be humourous back. If he isn't DON'T BE HUMOUROUS. There is no known "correct" verbal response to "Think we're Stirling Moss, do we.", except on the occasion this question was posed to a pulled motorist who actually WAS Sir Stirling Moss.

Be courteous. Be nice. Smile. BUT DO NOT ADMIT TO ANYTHING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

You have no idea the grudge the police have against young drivers here in New Zealand. There have been many laws/acts passed from our government specifically targetting young drivers (they called it the Boy Racer Act).

The severity of your ticket boils down to the policemens mood and how he's feeling. If you simply loose traction in a completely uncontrollable way (say moving off from a stop, uphill, on a road lightly covered in gravel) he can pull you over and fine you for that. As soon as he hears the sound rubber scraping on the road it's all over red-rover.

Just because slidesquad#1 is young and was pulled over by a policeman doesn't make the policeman right and slidesquad#1 wrong. Think of the kid who got bullied at school and decided to become a cop, same kinda attitude is held here.. Although I do have a lot of respect for the cops here who do do the right thing.

I got:

Reckless driving = 8pts
Speed 40+ over = 12pts
Speed 25+ over = 6pts

(or something)

I pled to:

Careless driving = 4pts
Driving without a headlight = 1pt

The headlights were fully functional, it's just a charge you plead to - sort of like defective vehicle (except they wanted to give me careless driving and there's only one one point offense).

I got pulled over for going 135 mph on the AC expressway ..they used a hellicopter to track me and had two cruisers drive ahead of me because the ones behind couldnt catch up. They impounded the car and arrested me for reckless driving . The fines added up to over 2,000 .00 . my lawyer arrainged a plea bargain to failure to yield and improper inspection ( headers with no catylictic converter and a blower ) . he had gotten the radar thrown out on a tech so they were left with visual evidence ..close one .
Its not the first time I got multiple tickets and not the worst . The worse was getting ticketed for " street racing " on Delaware ave. in Philly....only problem being I was caught in the group who were fleeing a mass bust ..I was on my way home from work ...I was also told " I should know better than to be involved in racing blah blah blah "... despite my pleas of innocence..The fact I was driving my Mustang GT made the cops lump me in with the rest.

improper inspection ( a million reasons..all to avail the cars street legal ) :)

improper registration..( they deemed the car not street legal )
Window tint / vision obscured ( window tint is factory and legal..wtf they were on a roll )
failure to signal ( knob head said when I pulled over I didnt signal... 💡 )
I was not very happy and in fact quite pissed ...being that I WAS just trying to get home..the madder I got the more they found to ticket .
It still cost 220 .00 to get my car back and 300.00 for a lawyer to be found not guilty .
It also didnt stop the Judge from lecturing me about driving on that street at that time...blame the victim .. :) .
520.00 to drive home from a second friggin shift ...it sucks.
 
The window tinting isn't unusual. They pull people over around here for tinted windows too, even if it was put on by the factory. I don't get it either.

If kids didn't drive like idiots...don't worry I'm guilty of it back in my teenaged days...they wouldn't have to do that sort of stuff. Police have every right to pull you over, it's their job.
 
Know it's an old thread but yep... Karma caught up and bit me in the ass.

Apparently, a cop counting is more accurate than a radar gun (here in Ca.)... not to mention the fact he was waiting at the bottom of the hill on part of the freeway. :rolleyes:

Obviously needed his quota because not a second after he finished giving me a ticket he was off to stop someone else, no radar just a whip of his head to see the cars going by. Whatever...
 
California cops have to just pick someone and pull them over. How could you single anyone out down there?
 
I heard about cops doing that. How can that be legal? Can you take it into court and fight it because the cop didn't have any evidence?

How fast were you going? What did he say you were doing? How much was the ticket?

Good point. It's pretty crazy down there. But ultimately, isn't the cop's job to make sure that people are more or less in order and that they are driving safely? In which case it would make more sense to pull somebody over for actually going the speed limit, which is pretty dangerous in Cali?

You should have just said you were trying to be safe and drive with the flow of traffic instead of making yourself vulnerable to getting rear ended by going 20 slower that traffic.
 
I'm not sure how much the ticket is (getting a follow up in the mail), he didn't say anything accept lic/reg. Me probably saying I was late to school didn't help. :rolleyes::dunce: and I was probably going 75 (everyone on that freeway goes at least 70) at the top of the hill but by the time I got towards him 80 because he wrote down "83" nice random guess...

From what my friend tells me, it's easier to just pay it and go to traffic school than try and contest it. The make it real fair... xD

Well... either way out of everyone I will be the one to get caught everytime. I'm not making an excuse for myself it's just that sitting at the bottom of the hill to catch someone to fill you're quote is quite low... imo

Yeah, cops don't seem to give a flying... about safety. :rolleyes:

I feel quite the same way. I know that I will probably be the one who gets caught. That is why I am always looking every direction for a cop and check stretches of road before I go over. Whenever I'm not weaving through traffic at 100 (which is only when I either have someone on lookout or have somebody driving that fast "with" me) IM constantly on the lookout and not standing out from traffic or following the speed limit on the dot.

I know. I'm a wuss of a driver.

This is exactly why I will get into huge trouble when I get pulled over and try ot contest that the way I was driving was safer than obeying the law. Seriously, the cops should treat traffic as the speed limit IMO.

What's amazing is I've never had a front license plate but I have never gotten a ticket for not having one. It's apparently a law to have one on the front here...

With that said I should go tack it on... Safety first. :rolleyes:

Actually, I think they made it a law so it's easier to radar. :dunce:

I agree. And I don't agree. "The flow" is the safest speed to go on the freeway, but it's the police's fault that nobody goes the speed limit. Speed laws are poorly enforced, so nobody really cares that much.

Here in Texas we have old geezers who think going the speed limit on the highway is too fast. They will go 40 in a 70 zone. I can't make this up. I think cops should pull people over going too slow as well.
 
Seems like EVERYONE had something happen to them yesterday.

Anyway, if you get pulled over for something, keep your mouth shut and get a traffic attorney for like 70 bucks.
 
Only thing I've ever gotten pulled over for is Driving more than 100 ft in a turning lane. I speed all the time though (I know I shouldn't...)

Minimum speeds are something I would love to see implemented. The Canadians have a minimum speed limit, although it is like 30 mph.:indiff: These drivers can be extremely dangerous, especially when they aren't paying full attention.
 
Isn't going 'too slow' deemed as dangerous driving. Before now I've seen drivers doing 30-40 on the motorway pulled over.

I remember an elderly man got pulled over years ago for doing 10mph in a 30 zone.

But yeah, slow drivers on the motorway are a hazard, they force trucks to have to overtake which then bunches everyone else up (especially when there's only 2 lanes).
 
About 2 months ago, I was driving (on a public, but unpaved road) when I saw like 15 cops doing business. I didn't get pulled over. I was clearly and blatantly underage (for driving) Turds. They saw me and all.
 
I've only gotten pulled over once in my life.

That was for the passenger yelling out the window at midnight when a cop was nearby. Freaked me out but we got away without anything. I guess they were just checking for warrants and stuff. Maybe kids + GTI + trouble isn't such a good combination.
 
I was in a vehicle with my uncle. He does air conditioning in hospitals and we where on the way to an inspection that my uncle had to do. I don't know the full details but the point is, he was very tired and driving at 3:30 AM he was accidentally doing 65 in a 25.:dunce:

Well the cop pulls him over. He gave my uncle a break for the speeding since it was so early. But unfortunately his insurance had expired about, you know, 3 and a half hours ago. So he got a small fine and was let free. Later that night him me and his daughter (my 16 year old cousin) went fishing for some tarpon. We where in the Florida Keys at the time. Pretty nice place to tell the truth.
 
The police dont even need you to be speeding to stop you here. Since september ive been stopped three times for 'insurance checks' once in my car and twice in a friends. We have also been stopped because we were 'driving too slow' Wtf?! Were not exactly going to speed is a police car is up our ass following us around... Every time they stop you here they have to take your details and wait for comformation which takes about 10-15mins!!

Trucks overtaking each other is so annoying, when we were on holiday, we had the pleasure of being behind a tractor overtaking another tractor at 30 on a 70 limit!

Insurance checks are a good thing Slick Rick, even if they can be annoying. There are over a million uninsured drivers in the UK, it's a big problem.

1. Get a fast car with loud exhaust
2. Drive just a little faster than the tractor when passing
3. Cut said tractor off
4. Stomp on the gas leaving a big cloud and noise and take off into the distance to make your point.

Especially funny with Priuses.
