What people are getting at is you need to give credit to Alba for creating the icons you used in your theme, instead of claiming them as your own.

It's his theme, it's okay. He put the theme together, it's his.

If he KNEW the icons were made but Alba, then I would see people giving him such a hassle. But he didn't, so how can he give credit if he never knew?

The theme is sick, but I just wanted it to be a little different so I thought I would give a stab at it on my own (but soon gave up because I don't want to make my own icons, really.)

Put it this way.. If you make a flier for an event, and use a font you used off of a particular website, do you have to give credit to the guy who made the font everywhere you post the flier?

Sorry if the icons seem alike, I didn't know, I found them through an internet search.

Now there's no reason to be mean about it. He made this himself on his own time. As for the icons, they were out there on the internet, without anything telling him that he has to give credit to this person. Anything out there is fair game. Welcome to the 21st century.
You guys need to read up on copyright law. Wallrunner and Davethestalker are perfectly correct. The internet does not function under "finders keepers" law.

If he didn't know where he got Alba's icons from, or even that they were Alba's icons, he now does, and he should now be asking Alba if he can use those icons. At the very least, he should be giving Alba credit for creating them.

Dotcody - I have removed the link in your sig. There is material there that is unsuitable to link to from this site.

Hi dotCody, I received no message at all from you asking for my permission to use my icons. The whole I found it on the internet argument doesn't really apply since you've repackaged it and I'm not comfortable with that at all. I'd like you to take down your theme please and if you do put it back up to use your own icons or make your own.

Thank you.

How the hell is this the #1 Gran Turismo fansite in the world? It must be self-proclaimed, with forum members like this.

1st The thread title is crap.

2nd Your theme is well put together, but don't kid yourself, somebody else has done all the hard work.

3rd You had the opportunity to admit your mistake in copying somebody elses work, wether you did it intentionally or not is irrelevant.

4th Your attitude stinks. If you <12 that's excusable.

5th Being the #1 fansite requires a lot of work by some of the biggest GT fans out there, and the constant battle with 'new members' completely missing the point.

I'm not really sure there was any real need for personal comments concerning individuals who are merely showing you where you'd gone wrong whether it's me in the above quote or when you inexplicably called Coxis a dunce.

I appreciate that you may well not have noticed that the icons had been created by alba. I can understand that but surely when you downloaded the icons you did realise that you hadn't created them and therefore somebody else had even if you didn't know who it was?

There's no mention on your linked site or here that anybody else was involved in the creation. At the very least it's polite to mention somebody else has put work into what you have presented as yours.

On the linked site you've even marked each one of your themes as copyrighted to you in 2010 which is even worse. As has been covered previously, things being presented online does not make them free for anybody to use and people really do need to respect that.

I've personally been using alba's icons since he first posted them and he's put a lot of work into producing his themes. I've seen many, many themes created with his icons and it's not never nice to see.

Alba's been really helpful on the other thread and even created a custom user icon for me when I asked him to.

I still use that icon now (Thanks alba) for my main account along with his themes and to see yet another person claim his work as theirs is really annoying to see, especially on this site which I personally do consider to be the best Gran Turismo fansite in the world. One of the reasons for that is because members are willing to stand up and call people out when things like this happen.

Not that I really care, but just to add a bit of balance, could Alba provide evidence of a copyright certificate number before publicly humiliating dotCody? Its not like the guy is making any money off of this. He was kind enough to share a theme he assembled on a forum for like minded people. Why get so political?

Thank you for saying that. I know I'm not involved, and I personally don't think evidence of a copyright certificate is necessary, but I definitely agree with everything else in your post. I know dotCody, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind putting a thank-you to alba on his blog underneath this theme, if that's alright with alba.

And there's no reason to make rude, sarcastic comments (*cough* John Parry). So, what do you say, alba?

It's now there's someone using others' work and claiming that it's made by him, which is not the case. I reckon at the very least the OP should give credits to the original icon creator, aka, Alba.

The one person that started the rude comments was dotCody.

No, you dunce, I grabbed some screenshots from this site that a friend pointed out and I re-sized them and filtered them. Then I put them into a .p3t file along with some Gran Turismo icons.

In case you missed that.

Yeah, I guess you're right, but the whole picture thing was just cold.

I think I'm just going to back out of this whole thing. Clearly I'm not helping the situation. And don't quote me on this. :dunce:

Plagiarism is plagiarism, the Mona Lisa isn't copyrighted, yet if you were to paint and claim it as your own do you really think they would be fine with it?

Also, Alba isn't humiliating anyone, dotCody is only humiliating himself.

It isn't political. It's called being civilised and decent. On top of that, where did you see Alba humiliate dotCody?

If dotCody was smart enough to find somebody elses icons, call it his own work, share it with the world, not accept his mistake, and then have an attitude about it...... Then maybe he would be smart enough to admit his mistake, apologise, and ask for a mod to lock this thread.

Yeah, I guess you're right, but the whole picture thing was just cold.
To be fair, La Gioconda was used for a reason which Justin covered perfectly in his post above. Yes I created that image, the image was mine but the painting itself is quite clearly not mine even though I've put my name on it.

It's not necessarily about copyrights as many online images aren't copyrighted but that doesn't give people free reign to use the images and pretend they are theirs.

It seems not everybody feels the same about that but maybe as I've personally spent years on the creative side of things it is a little closer to me than to some other people. I would have hoped that politeness was universal though.
