Introduction: Let's face is; there's still a lot we do not know about Gran Turismo 5. After 5 years and 2 months of production, we lack a release date of all things! We lack a car list or a track list. We think we know GT5, but in reality, we know little. Much is left to be uncovered.

Where are we going with this? Nonetheless, we know certain things about Gran Turismo 5. And one thing which was revealed first at the Tokyo Game Show 2009 were the contents of the famous GT Mode, or as some refer to it, Career Mode. Either way, it's been the heart of all GT titles.
And by comparing GT4's GT Mode to what we know about GT5's GT Mode we can begin to better speculate as to what might be carried over to GT5 and what might be left out in GT5.

So what can we infer/expect in GT5?

Well, it's a good question. Clearly, GT5 won't have just 6 icons in GT5, so what will return and what might be removed? What information do you think has been yet to be revealed and what are you hoping remains?

We need to decide if the GT mode will be a Phoenix, a Supernova, or a Unicorn
.

I honestly don't know what to expect. Kaz said he's tried to re-invent it a wee bit. But then I may be missing the point...

Actually, I just struggled to read the first post  :yuck:
Red on white doesn't like my eyes :boggled: (politely requests black text for non-titles :dopey:)

Enough smilies! :sly:

EDIT: Dave, stop acting the tit... :D

EDIT, EDIT: Just threw it all in Notepad... still can't read it. Think it must be time for bed... :grumpy:

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT: Integration of online features? (Is that an actual contribution?)

I'd like to see the same icons as GT4 had..But just a different look to it. The only thing I can think of that they'd add to it would be Online mode. But that also could be an option from the main screen.

Or instead of having Beginners events, Professional Events and Extreme events all separately laid out on the screen, Just have one Icon called Events where you can select Beginner, Pro or Extreme. Or in other words just like Prologue has.

This Image is of the main screen, probably useless in this thread but oh well.
GT5MenuScreens.jpg

Edit: I think they should even get rid of the idea of having like for example.. France, Germany, Belgium, Italy etc all separate and just have them all listed under Europe, then you can select from a list of European manufacturers. That would mean less clutter on the screen.

GT5 better not drop GT Auto. That's one thing that I'm counting on being ten times better than GT4's.

I hope they don't go with GT5P's style. Or if they do at least list the championships individually than go to each race after selecting a championship.(sort of like GT3)

However they do it though I hope they don't follow the cut single player for more multi-player. Although in 5 1/2 years they should be able to do both to great lengths.

Agreed! Agreed! GT5P feels so condensed. I feel so constricted (I know it's a tiny game). GT4's lay-out is nice, but now that I have a chance to look at it, it's pretty concentrated to a degree, too. I expect GT5's map to be at least double that of GT4's.

I would just like to say, that you have made a pretty good effort with this thread.

I would like to know how you have determined the 6 features that are in Gran Turismo 5 so far. How do you know they are in?

Well, they are fact. That is what Kazunori said at TGS. And thanks! It took me like 20 minutes to write everything down from GT4 as I was playing it.

Hopefully there will be an option to customize the race events in GT mode- namely the length of the races where you can pick either long, medium or short races (or even duration of the races for Professional events). 2 or 3 lap races, even for beginner is too short for me. 5 laps would be minimum (eg. Best Motoring Super Battle or One make race) on short track like Tsukuba although on Montegi (full) 3 laps might suffice.

Even though Kaz has remarked on how much less time gamers have to play these days, I expect something like GT4's layout and progression because it makes you want to unlock stuff. Imagine all the manufacturer's cup races! While all cars might be unlocked in Arcade Mode, I suspect we'll still have a few cars missing until we win/buy them in GT Mode.

I'm still hopeful we'll have some kind of Career Mode option alongside Arcade and GT Mode. I'm also hoping we can divide our garage into sections, with so many cars to buy and modify. With so much content, I do expect they will have put some thought into how the game will be organized and make it sensible, though you might have a few layers to poke through.

One thing I'm hoping is missing are so many button presses, such as with car modification. They do seem to love all those confirmations, at least in past games. ;)

I would say it's pretty obvious it's not the final product, though it's far from an irrelevant pic.

What'd be cool to add to the GT-mode is a test-drive feature for showroom cars (means assessed ;) ) and for some used cars. This would take place on a street course of your choice.

Since the locations are (presumably) being modeled as one unit, this means that different layouts may be accessible at the same time (by means of loading in temporary structures such as barriers like the one at Fuji) - equally, a free-form version may be available, and perhaps this is where the track editor comes in?

An easy way to reduce the amount of time a gamer has to play ( as Kaz seems to want ) without resorting to anything drastic regarding to the game structure we all know and love is to increase price money, particularly on the easy events you are only able to play early in the game.
Although i am perfectly fine with how it was.
I can also see GT auto and Tuning Shop being merged to simplify the menu somewhat, and the second hand cars being available by brand via the car dealers.
Hope they don't resort to dumbing down the licences to decrease the amount of time, although some of those driving missions ( i could do without ) could be merged with it.
Slighlty less content in GT mode versus GT4 is probably levelled by online-content.

I think that merging GT Auto and into the tuning shop is a sensible idea 👍 - also, a button in the garage should take you straight there, wherein you can pick the manufacturer for each component as you buy it rather than having to go door-to-door, assuming such a feature actually makes a difference this time...

I'd like to see different difficulty settings, or game length settings, so you could play the "long game" and scrimp and scrape your way through races a set of tyres and a gallon of fuel at a time :scared:
Scaling all the way up to an almost arcade-like experience. This would no doubt necessitate multiple saves, (or "characters" viz. a career-type implementation) per account, since historically GT tends to "own" whatever storage medium it's been stuck on and won't allow any more than one save. (I recently read that GT5:P only works for one user account - eh?!)

Anyway, building on many people's suggestions for a "career mode", what this multiple-character thing would mean is that you could grind away on your Sunday cup racer (or SuperGT, if you so choose) for season on season with a financial system similar to the real deal (i.e. you get a "budget" according to sponsors, plus winnings, and you have to progress...) and when you get bored, just jump back to your traditional GT-mode "character" and have a blast for a bit. Kinda sounds a bit RPGish... Then again, that's almost what GT has been anyway!

Certain modes then may not necessitate all licences, and driving missions should be separate - meaning the types of licence tests should be distinct from the driving missions, especially if we get a new selection of mission types.

How all this ties into an online system is beyond me, though... need more time to jot stuff down, which is really just a waste of time unless I decide to make my own... 💡 No.

But Kaz said that not everyone has an internet connection, so its integration cannot dominate the way the game works, otherwise it just won't work!

As much as I love to speculate, I think we're only going to disappoint ourselves in this thread, not to mention all this free brain-storming we're giving somebody :odd:

Works fine for games like UT and COD. Okay not everyone has an internet conncection but I'd be surprised if it was anything approaching 1% of PS3 users. What I'd expect is the same GT mode there's always been with nothing more than interface tweaks in terms of new features.

Despite 1 or two users living in the dark ages with their lack of internets, online will dominate GT5, just like it did with prologue, even despite the fact that prologue online was half arsed at best (prolly nearer 1/4 arsed tbh)

If they get the online right, which I expect they will, no one will even remember GT mode a year or two from now.

Well if you liked the driving missions ( at least they were a challenge ) i don't see how they're going to be any less if they were to be included in the licence section ( if reducing menu space is the issue ) as a sort of super licence+ only for the elite as a status symbol of sorts without having any consequences regarding unlocking events.

I mentioned online not because it should be integrated in GT mode, but because it is an addition which was not in GT4, so although GT5 may have slightly less content ( which i sincerely doubt ) compared to GT4, it will be more than compensated by online-content.

Wow! There you go Kaz, we've done it for you :D

I really like your Car Dealer list, Goldrusher, but maybe it could be better: i.e. you select what you're looking for (and it could include cars for sale online...) by category and / or "quality" (e.g. power, age etc.) that might make comparing potential purchases that much easier. You could always go back to "classic" mode, of course :sly:

@analog fair enough, maybe as a sort of "coffee break" type thing, one for every (other?) actual test?

(by the way, I don't disagree with online at all, just throwing a spanner in the works, as usual  )

Regarding Kaz being worried about online not available to some, he offered DLC for Prologue, so not that worried it seems. ;)

Well, more serious and more challenging than those Coffee Breaks, possibly with some unique rewards like a
Gold Veyron ( yikes!!) or a diamond-studded Murcielago ( even worse...)

According to this

http://www.teletext.co.uk/gamecentral/news/601b4eeaad3231c47cdd19b4fb839d6c/Online+statistics.aspx

Only 30% of PS3 owners play online anyway.

Concentrating on online to the detriment of offline GT-mode would be a Very Bad Idea.

That 70% need to get with the program, seriously, if you own a PS3 i guess it's not that hard to aquire an internet connection.
PSN is free, and since most of that 70% probably already are connected they only have to purchase one little cable.
For those who don't, well sorry, at least GT mode offers tons of content anyway.

And that's where one of the potential problems lie.

I don't like being coerced into playing a multiplayer game; both the PS3 and the 360 seemingly "force" you into doing so if you're one of those people who actually cares about your gamerscore/trophy count. If GT5 does lack a sufficient offline mode, it's going to get bombarded with undeniable criticisms.

Simple as that.

Bull's eye, playing online will be fun, but I will spend almost all the time offline, I do have an internet connection which completely sucks! but I can play prologue online properly, I just don't feel comfortable when playing with ultra fast pro drivers.

The main question is wheter GT5 GT mode will be depth and challenging as everyone is expecting, but sincerely, PD can just add more specific-car entry events, there were a lot of cars in GT4 which I simply didn't drive too much because there's no event for them, for example we had manufacturer events, which are brilliant in my opinion, but the national championships can be longer and have more races, since the car list is crammed full of models. I would love an "Italian Supercar challenge - Lambo, Ferrari, Alfa, Pagani.."

Regarding the interface, I think they've done a good job for prologue, but as we had in GT4, we are getting a lot of content in GT5, so merging features in common subject buttons would be an intelligent approach to cleanse the screen and make it more readable. This interface discussion is the kind of feedback that would be appreciated by PD, good job SRDs. 👍

No matter what interface they give us, I will be satisfied as long as I have that animated garage from the CES demo.

End of monster post, actually I always write a book when posting. :dunce:

Online multiplayer is part of any big game today, like it or not, and you can always choose not to participate.
I find it to be a welcome and complementing addition, not a replacement of offline content which should be, like you said, sufficient as i will certainly only use offline in the beginning but after a certain amount of time i will have all the cars and hopefully all gold licences, etc. and then when i feel confident enough will start to race real life opponents like i did and do with Prologue.
I'm certainly no trophy-whore or even care for gamerscore, but only play online for the experience which is completely different from offline.
It's purely the fun, not the statistics, i care for.
