Online is for all the people who have ever complained about crappy AI opponents. One you've tried it single player just looks like so much dumb!

That 70% need to get with the program, seriously, if you own a PS3 i guess it's not that hard to aquire an internet connection.
PSN is free, and since most of that 70% probably already are connected they only have to purchase one little cable.
For those who don't, well sorry, at least GT mode offers tons of content anyway.

Online jerks tend to ignite misanthropic feelings in people, so it really isn't surprising that they'd want to distance themselves from it. The IMs alone tend to be like forums right before the mod steps in.

Play too well, and you receive either "join my new clan" messages, or someone with a tiny pair who sends you a hate message, claiming that you are a cheat.

Play too poorly, and someone sends you a message telling you that you suck ("pwn'd") and others about how you messed up their golden opportunity to really shine.

In all honesty, not receiving any of the above types of IMs is reason enough to limit online play for most, because for certain people, anonymity appears to be a hyper-motivation for acting like a complete 🤬 .

The only problem is that a lot of online opponents don't appear to posses any form of intelligence either, be it artificial or otherwise.
They have to, and certainly will, upgrade it from Prologue to include more options such as private events and such, but that's another discussion.
I, for one, would like to see some open online events which require licences ( even some all silver or gold ) to race only those who've made an effort and proved their driving ability.
Or at least qualifiying if that's not possible.

As for online jerks, well if that's gonna put you off they win, i've recieved some really nasty messages after asking people to explain why they acted like cheats and spoiling the fun in a very polite manner, always leaving the option open they might have a credible answer ( like poor connections, etc. ).
I even had one calling me a cheat because i had a better car set-up ( he was serious ), after which i first shook my head in disbelief and then almost cried with laughter.
You still always have the option to block the messages.

Updated GT4 version would be great... I will be very disappointed if GTmode is worse than GT4 or similar to GTPSP!!! GTmode is soul of GT games and time where I spend most of my time.

GT mode has always been the heart of the game. I'd agree with this but now I think it's set to change. Online will be the new beating heart of GT.

Yuck. Impossible. It can't be. And it won't be.

GT Auto will make GT5's World Map so awesome. I have a strong feeling that Gran Turismo is moving progressively from just a driving game to the everything car game. Soon, and I think GT5 will prove this, Gran Turismo titles will be known as the best simulator, the best customizer (without being too gaudy like NFS), and the #1 car tuning game. Really, I believe it.

Also, if GT5 didn't have GT Mode, it would be just another NFS game :p

GT Mode is king. It's how you progress. It's what makes you appreciate different countries' cars and tracks. GT Mode is a class. A teacher. You don't cut that from the game! Ever.

Where's all this online scepticism coming from all of a sudden?
For years GT was criticised by the world and its wife for lacking it.
We're turning into Andy from Little Britain:

"I want that one"

"Are you sure Andy? You always said that although it would be a nice but not essential part of the intrinsic GT-experience, the core of GT should always remain loyal to the roots of its offline basis."

"Yeah, i know....that one!"

( Online finally implemented )

"Don't like it.........."

Well I never asked for it.

I've only played like a couple of races in Prologue and didn't like it too much. People are ramming each other and the cars are all over the place because of the lag.

I'm sick of grinding, getting too old for that, I hope for no more grinding
Grinding for credits to get cars is old school and not one bit fun

maybe if you got a regular wage as an employed race driver or something would be better.
As you advanced up the career structure you get paid more

We need to decide if the GT mode will be a Phoenix, a Supernova, or a Unicorn
.

Here's that breakdown played out in my head:

Phoenix - no, Jean Grey (x-men) played that out years ago
Unicorn - no, too girly
Super Nova is the winner by default!

The one thing I can expect is to do the Sunday Cup race right after the license tests are golded, hehe.

What grinding? I got to 25% in GT4 without replaying a single race and never had any difficulty affording any car after that point.

Well I had to grind out the cash cow races or B-Spec the DTM championship to get the 9 million or so for the black LMP cars in the used car yard that show up every 700 or so days

I don't want any of that in GT5, those days are long gone. Gaming is way different now
The way GT4 had it, was like one big check list ... snore.
There was no real career mode structure at all.

GT5 should be like a big sandbox, you do whatever you want, when you want to
You should also have your own personal cars, and cars that you don't own, but drive for race teams etc

Old school? 5 years have gone by and all of a suddent Gran Turismo is about what? Just online? lol, no. Not even close. You may not like grinding for credits, grinding for cars, but that is the long journey many have come to LOVE. LOVE, I say. I'm not sure if you don't appreciate the process of gaining slow cars and working your way up to supercars, or perhaps you don't like process of battling the top cars from each country/region of the world. At any rate, GT Mode is here to stay! It is far too important and the essence of what Kazunori wants to convey in a video game.

He does have a point though. At the top level of racing, teams spend millions on their cars, and generate millions in profit from sponsorship alone.

I always took the prize car as a reward from sponsorship if you will, as it used to far outstrip the prize money for the majority of events.

In GT4, you spend 3.5-4.5m cr. on a Group C or LMP prototype, to win something like 300k from a 10 race series. (And an unsellable prototype car at the end maybe?)

If the series is run yearly, it would take 12 years just to break even. Obviously in GT, series are not yearly, you can race maybe 30-40 of them a year ingame, but that is besides the point.

The early grind in GT is not to gain money, it is to advance through the game, which is natural. But later you hit a point where the income you get from races, is minute compared to the cost of the car you entered (Even if stock). This goes for most of the Professional-Extreme races events anyway.

The only good thing is the prize cars allow you to advance through the game quicker, but then the game loses the ability to pick any car, you have to either grind for cash, or use the same old cars over and over again to win the later races.

5 years is a long time when it comes to computers and gaming tech!

Hell I was playing with Intelevsions and C-64 back in my youth :scared:

It's changed, no doubt. But not too too much. The only difference I see from this generation and the last is online and DLC-related stuff.

What I want, is a vastly increased prize money total for races, to compensate for the lack of the reality that is sponsorship, in the game.

In turn, I would like to see B-spec wins give only a fraction of the prize money (Maybe half? So that the A-spec race is worthwhile).

Grinding always used to bug the bejeezus out of me - I want the 3,000,000cr Veyron, so I have to do 700 laps of Suzuka get the moneys.

That was the beauty of online mode for me - 700 laps of Suzuka went from being skull crunchingly boring to a pleasant weekend going to to toe with the GTP crowd.

It's changed, no doubt. But not too too much. The only difference I see from this generation and the last is online and DLC-related stuff.

The only difference? Human v's human is bigger than the jump from Top Trumps cards to Video game simulation!

Well games and style of games that used to be mainstream, are now considered casual, cheap games. Something you might pick up for $5 or free in Flash form

And so must GT change along with time.
Things need to be epic, sandboxey and mind blowing to be considered AAA titles these days - at least for me

I'll let my good buddy KY explain things as he sees is.

Listening to the TGS 2009 video interview with KY, he says:

"It's been a long time since we had a full numbered version of Gran Turismo out. And, though we're working on online functionality as well, we're really focused on making a very solid, complete offline mode as well. We think it's a very important part of the game and we're hoping everyone looks forward to that."

Oh baby!

he also said the GT PSP was an indication of the direction GT5 was heading

And that GT5 will set new standards for driving games and change the forumla of GT

Yes, I do remember that. But he also said it progresses about 10 times as fast as GT5. So where are we now?

This in a nutshell - I don't think GT games of old will be like GT5
Kaz figures, people are starting to copy the GT formula, it's time to move on. And I agree

During an interview at CES with Yamauchi he talked about his plans for the game. "Games have kind of branched out into very detailed genres since 15 years ago when I first started developing games. And because they have branched out into these categories they have started to lose their individuality. It's hard to differentiate between one game and another. I want Gran Turismo 5 to be something really special so we are doing something to really revolutionize car games and racing games in Gran Turismo 5.

Talk a bit about what players will experience when they get to play the game.

I created the first Gran Tursimo back in 1997 (for the original PlayStation). Back then, it kind of set a new standard for the style for car racing games. This Gran Turismo 5 is going to change all that now. It will change the style of car games in the future. It will be creating a new standard for the genre.

In what manner?

The entire game design and you might be able to say the functionality of the game. I think it would be expressed better if you just say the entire game design.

How are you doing this and is this to allow players to go deeper into the car driving experience?

I think the background behind it is the advancements in technology. But the driving force and necessity for that change is really the times we live in and that the lifestyles of the people playing games have changed over the years.

Interesting, but it doesn't seem as though he is going to ever take GT Mode away. Sure, it'll evolve as things tend to do, but those answers were more inspiring that anything.

It'll be more online based for sure

What are some of the features your most excited about releasing to the public?

With GT5, we're striving to redefine the racing game that we started with GT1. The game as a whole is completely new. But online functionality has to be at the top. We've worked so hard on it and we're hoping it's a hit.

Will users be able to set up car clubs and racing leagues?

Yes, they will. But I'm sorry but I can't elaborate much at this point.

Don't be too foolish now.

"And, though we're working on online functionality as well, we're really focused on making a very solid, complete offline mode as well. We think it's a very important part of the game and we're hoping everyone looks forward to that."-KY at TGS 2009.

Online doesn't necessarily mean playing online - think Youtube, Myspace and facebook

It could mean having any car you sell end up in a global 2nd hand GT market on a server, which is beamed back to other people's 2nd hand market. A bit like Spore if you will

Replays, tune setups, photo mode pics, all mirrored on a server to be explored by others
Like in Spore, you may even be able to subscribe to Friends and others for their content
Maybe even with ratings and comments and what not.

All this kind of stuff really enhances the game and adds to the atmosphere and community. I would not just play off line and never log into the PSN
