I got the Playchair and G27 wheel all set up a week or two ago and have been noodling with the game here & there (hey, it's still summer).

Last night I finished all of the licences, and the Sunday Cup.

I'm still a little perplexed as to the buying and modifying of cars. A few have been suggested on this thread, like the Mazda RX-7 FC3S, the '92 Evo, the Toyota Glanza V, or a Suzuki GSX/R-4 for example. Now, I personally don't have any interest in acquiring a whole bunch of cars if I don't need to. I'd rather just have one good car for each type of racing (tarmac/rally etc) and become very familiar with it's characteristics.

The cars that I've really liked so far have been the high-end Subaru Cusco (in Arcade mode), or that black Mercedes that was on the final licence test on Nurburgring. Both had a very solid, natural, race car feel, as opposed to some of the absolute sleds I was forced to drive which felt like a '66 Buick with the shocks removed, running bald, under-inflated, bias-ply tires.

Are those high-end cars obtainable, or do they only become available later in the game?

Should I sell one or more of my cars now for some coin? (I think there's about 6 in the garage).

I know this is all so "old hat" to most of you, so please bear with me as I try to find my way in this GT4 world.

Thanks.

G'day Tic Tach.

I think you mean this MERCEDES-BENZ AMG 190E 2.5 16V Evolution II (DTM) '92
You can win from the Schwarzwald League B or Purchase in the Legend Section of Mercedes for close to 1.5 million credits

The Subaru Cusco Advan Impreza '03 is avaliable from the Subaru Dealer for 500,000 credits.

If you were to use Famine's List found here , this is a huge help on were to find cars and how much you need.

You can also download this guide. It's got a few typos and cars that don't exist in the North American version listed, but it basically tells you where you can win every prizecar available and the restrictions for each race or championship.

It has a list of all the cars in the game too. 👍

Here's a couple pics of my Playseat and Theatre Room. The screen looks small in the pic for some reason; it is 8' wide.

This other black Playseat is one that I just finished making today for my brother-in-law.

Looks bloody good mate. I've just put some money on a wheel (DFGT or something), costing about $USD89 new but dunno if that's a good price. My problem in the mean time is how to mount the pedals, and also the seat.
Nice work mate.

Yea that is awesome, that driving dungeon. It's so clean!

I think I may post a pic later of MY driving space. You guys are gonna laugh. It looks nothing near as awesome!

Thanks. After I got my Playseat & wheel and GT4, my brother-in-law got back into GT4 (he was a recovered addict of the game), and as I have a welder and power hack-saw, I decided to make him one based on the general set-up/geometry of the Playseat I bought.

He found a slightly used seat which made it all possible. Had I known that a seat was for sale locally, I would have bought it and made my own too. I just assumed that a proper seat would be expensive, but he got it for $40.00 Assume nothing!

The total material cost including a spray-bomb was about $80.00 (+ the seat). I've thought about making a number of them and selling them, but there's quite a bit of time involved, and I don't know how much I could get for one. *shrug*

What do you think? The Playseat brand sells for about $350.00 here (+ $40.00 tax). Would my version sell like hot-cakes, and for what price? I'm just not in tune with the whole gaming world/culture.

That's a nice cat there in the 1st picture.

Ok, so I have a projector question:

As explained in the O/P, I presently use a Panny AE900 (720p) projector and have a 95" (diag) screen.

When I get a PS3 and GT5, I'm wondering just how much improvement I would recognize by upgrading to a 1080p projector. Is GT5 1080p or 720p?

*GT4 (PS2) on my system is pretty good, but a little grainy, I'm wondering if the PS3 and GT5 alone will be a big enough improvement without spending more cake on a 1080p projector.

Thanks.

So hey, I was playing GT4 last night (remember, I'm a noob) and in a couple of the races in "Professional Series", instead of clicking on the first icon which would have entered me in "all 5 races", I simply did each race individually, got gold in all, but it wouldn't give me the prize car! I had to click that first icon and do all the races again.

What am I missing here?

Nothing.
The prizecar for the championship is exactly that.
You win the car for winning the championship, i.e. coming 1st out of 6 entrants based on a points total after 5 races, not for coming 1st in 5 individual races.

Unlike series races which require you to come 1st in every race before you'll win a prizecar (but no additional prizemoney on top of what you've earned for winning the races), the championship prizes can be won (theoretically) without actually winning a race! You'd then get the gold trophy for the championship, the prizecar and the championship prizemoney (something else you'd miss out on by doing races individually) but you wouldn't get any % completion added to your total until you did achieve a 1st place in every race (although it doesn't matter whether you win every race in a championship format or as individual races as far as % goes.)

e.g.

You finish 2nd in every race: 5 x 6pts = 30.
If a different AI driver won a race, and then took a 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th: 10 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 20.

Championship table would be:

You _______________30
AI Driver 1__________20
AI Driver 2__________20
AI Driver 3__________20
AI Driver 4__________20
AI Driver 5__________20

Therefore you'd win the championship, therefore the prizemoney & prizecar and get the gold championship trophy, and yet have all silver trophies for the 5 races and no additional percentage completion.

Of course GT4 seldom works in this way, the AI drivers even in series where they're all in the same car seem to maintain a certain rank, i.e. an AI driver that finishes last or 5th in the 1st race will generally maintain that form throughout a championship and so will the AI driver finishing 1st or 2nd, which makes the above scenario much more unlikely.

Ahh, ok, thanks.

There is also a race series for convertables only, but I don't have one. Do I need to buy one?

And why am I suddenly getting my butt kicked in the Boxer series? My 365 hp Subaru simply will not/cannot keep up.

Not necessarily:

If you win the All American Championship in the American Hall, you'll win a Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (C1) '54.
If you win Lotus Classics you'll win a Lotus Elan S1 '62.
If you get all golds on your Domestic B-Licence you'll win a Honda S500 '63.

However, given that you're going to have to buy 1 of the following cars:

Mazda MX-5 (any flavour) for NR-A Roadster Cup and Roadster 4hrs Endurance,
MGF '97 or MG TF160 for MG Festival,
Mercedes SL (any flavour) for SL Challenge,
Opel Speedster (any flavour) for Speedster Trophy,
Lotus Elise (except Motorsport Elise) for Elise Tropy.

then you'll be OK.

(I can't recall correctly, but there may be a GT4 glitch which allows the AI to run the Elise & Speedster (although technically Targa Tops, not convertibles) in the Spider & Roadster Challenge, but won't let you enter them. I may be wrong though.)

In answer, to the Boxer Spirit question:

Here's the AI list, with HP values in square brackets that're your competition for this event (on S2 tyres unless otherwise stated):

RUF CTR2 (S3s) [514]
RUF "Yellow Bird" (S3s) [462]
Subaru Impreza WRX 22B-STi '98 [421]
Subaru Legacy B4 2.0GT specB [413]
Subaru Impreza WRX STi '94 [405]
Subaru Impreza WRX STi IV '97 [409]
Subaru Impreza WRX STi V '98 [410]
Subaru Impreza WRX STi VI '99 [412]
Subaru Impreza Coupe R STi VI '99 [407]
Subaru Impreza WRX STi VII '00 [400]
Subaru Impreza Prodrive '01 [400]
RUF RGT (S3s) [397]
RUF 3400S (S3s) [397]
RUF BTR (S3s) [388]

Your Scoob, even though tuned, is still not up to the level of the tuned AI cars in this race or the extra grip that the RUFs get due to their S3 tyres.
You should try to find a grid that doesn't have a RUF in it.
That said, it is possible to cleanly win these races for over 100 A-spec points in a ~310HP Subaru Impreza Rally Car '99 with minimised downforce and N3 tyres if you find the right lineup and your driving skills are good. 👍

I used 351 horses in a Subie weighing about 2,750 pounds at Deep Forest. The other two races required more power...400 at Infineon and 425 at Hong Kong. Those RUFs are supercars, don't forget.

Another alternative, very similar to the one recommended by Smallhorses, is to use the Subaru Impreza Rally Car Prototype '01 that is won in the Normal Level - Capri Rally (Special Condition Races).

My notes say that you can win 155 A-spec points against the RUF Yellowbird.

Stock HP of 305
Ballast at 200
Tires: S3
I don't remember the downforce settings, but they were likely 11/16 since this is my default wing setting that I generally use, before attempting any special tuning. Dump the ballast if you want the race to be a little easier.

Good luck,

I'd listen to thee guys they know there stuff. If they give you info its backed up with expierience.

Thanks all. Yes, I dumped the white Impreza and used a blue Rally Impreza and cleaned up. I won that yellow Porche with over 450 hp, but what a POS it is to drive.

I'm still finding races that require a certain type of vehicle which I don't have. I'll go over Smallhorses notes when I have time.

It seems like the game was made for those who are already familiar with the GT series; but for those like me who aren't, and are not a real "gamer", it's very unintuitive and confusing. How do they expect a person to know all this stuff?

Just get all the liscences from b to ia, and then do the slipstream battles to win the zonda LM.

I'm sorry? What relevance does this have to anything? :boggled:
Can you enter Zonda LM in the Boxer Spirit race he enquired about? No.
Can you enter Zonda LM in the Spider & Roadster event he enquired about? No.

Please, for the sake of everyone else's eyes, read the thread and the questions at hand before supplying nonsense answers in future. :grumpy:

YOu can use my guide to get an idea of what each race requires.

http://www.gtcarreviews.com/id3.html

Just ignore all the power-to-weight ratio stuff and follow the descriptions I've written. :) Alot of GT4 races vary the cars that can show up. A Lotus Elise in the Clubman, for instance, will make for a more difficult race than if no Elise (or Opel Speedster or MR2) shows up. HTH

Thanks PB! Last night I re-visited the license center as I recall a few of them were pretty fun. I spent hours trying to get a silver in S-3 with the Saleen (which requires 1:27) and got it down to 1:27.006 which was still Bronze.

AAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!

Smallhorses is entirely correct about this^^^^, that the AI seems to establish a ranking, and then pretty much stick with it thru an entire Championship Series.

However, I've been known to shake things up with this!!

I am currently running the FGT Championship (Extreme Hall) using a FGT, and last night, after ten races the Championship table looks like this:

Points Table after 10 races:
Me (blue/white) FGT____100
Green/yellow FGT________34
Grey FGT________________33
Orange FGT______________32
Blue FGT________________31
Red FGT_________________30

I have employed all sorts of blocking, punting and other various dirty driving tactics to engineer this result. After another entertaining battle at Motegi, the table now looks like this:

Points Table after 11 races:
My FGT______________110
Green/yellow FGT_____36
Orange FGT___________36
Red FGT______________36
Blue FGT_____________34
Grey FGT_____________34

My next race is at Nurburgring, where I won't be able to engineer any specific finish, so we'll just have to see where they end up.

Points Table after 13 races:
My FGT______________130
Grey FGT_____________42
Orange FGT___________42
Red FGT______________42
Blue FGT_____________41
Green/yellow FGT_____41

I was able to keep the AI bunched up in points at both El Capitan and the 'Ring.

So finally after all 15 races in the FGT Championship, the finishing order was as follows:

Points Table after 15 races:
My FGT______________150
Red FGT______________49
Blue FGT_____________48
Orange FGT___________48
Green/yellow FGT_____48
Grey FGT_____________47

Not perfectly balanced, but pretty close!

So another Sauber Mercedes C9 was mine!

Enjoy the racing,
GTsail

Three things
1. Some really needs to (forum wise) straighten Ian88 out or kick him out.
2. If it was the RUF CTR2 I don't Blame you
3. In a way all games are made to be started from the beginning to some extant. Skills and storylines do carry over quite a bit. As far as the races go Im learning in this forum too so I would also like to thank Smallhorses, GTSail, and Parnelli Bone. It is possible however to skip a game in the GT series. I have actually Played Forza Motorsports 1 more than I have played GT3. Keep it up guys.
