Gran Turismo Sport Race-Ready Liveries

by @2clicks

The livery editor in Gran Turismo Sport is one of the most welcome features the game has to offer. Indeed it has me spending roughly 50% percent of my time crafting unique, pseudo-realistic race car designs that evoke the feel of a real livery. (The other 49% of my time is spent racing, and the other 1% sulking about the guy who punted me off the track at the last corner causing my DR and SR to dip.)

Anyway, my method of livery design is very simple; when it's a unique design, I envision the main sponsor and it's colours, and then build the initial body wrap around it. When it's a replica, especially of a lesser known team that doesn't have many sponsors initially, then I will proceed to choose a suitable sponsor to fit with the colour scheme. New liveries will drop in pairs every second Sunday. I certainly don't think I'm the best at pesudo-realistic designs (that honour goes to @CoolJetta3 and @BarryB), but I can feel myself improving with every design as I'm always open to critiquing.

Anyways, without further adieu, here are the designs (links to the liveries on gran-turismo.com are in the titles):

1. Xamarin (Corvette C7 Gr.3)

I was immediately drawn to the modern clean design of the Xamarin logo, and, having the Livery Editor feature in mind long before, decided that this would be a good fit for a race car sponsor. This one is a modern twist on the classic Grand Sport flavour, sporting a modern blue/white scheme and the number '2'.

Simple, yet elegant for my first replica retouch. This one is from the 2009 FIA GT series C6R, As for the main sponsor, I chose SanDisk because the curves in the design compliments the red serif typeface well in my opinion.

3. Mexico BMW Owners (Z4 GT3 '11)

I stumbled upon a few cool Mexican sponsors while idling the day away on brandsoftheworld.com at work. This one is orange because of the main sponsor. This could've been painted on any race car, but the Z4 was the latest prize I got, so it was first in line to get the livery treatment.

This is the first of my 'original flavour' designs. These designs try to resemble Polyphony Digital pseudo-realistic designs as much as possible. There is a more minimalistic approach here, with only two colours dominating the landscape.

5. Peugeot Motorsport Alternate 1 (RCZ Gr.3)

Another 'original flavour' design where minimalism is the order of the day. More pictures to be added soon, as is the case with the liveries that only have one image.

UPDATE: New pictures added.

A rather strange case with this one. It originally started out as a replica retouch of the enigmatic green-striped Viper GTS-R that was removed from GT2. When physical limitations made this impossible, it eventually evolved into its own design. It also got me the most likes on a design, so who am I to complain?

7. Scuderia Ferrari UK (458 Italia GT3)

This one is a visualization of what a works Ferrari team from the United Kingdom would look like. (They seem to have ousted Risi Competizione from the top works spot.)

8. ideame Lamborghini (Huracan GT3)

Arguably my most challenging livery to date. Made even more difficult by my forgetfulness in resting my PS4, instead I switched it off completely while this was still WIP, and I ended up losing my colour history.

9. Pietersen Automotive (Vantage GT3)

The proudest I've been of a livery at the time it was made. So proud that I made up a fictional family-run team, that would be carried by my best designs from this point forward.

My latest work, a pair of replica retouches:

12. 8 Star Motorsports (458 Italia GT3)

20171223151455.jpg

Quite pleased with the way this one turned out, although some of the Venezuelan brands had to be omitted because they were hard to find. The free advertising would've done wonders for the ailing Venezuelan economy.

13. Dragon Razor Racing (650S GT3)

20171223151355.jpg
20171223151514.jpg
20171223151425.jpg

Another odd case. This car did not officially compete, it was originally conceived as a livery for an R3E team, so that would make it a replica of a replica. Still I think it's one of my best.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all! I come bearing gifts! Three, not two but three new Gr.3 liveries, all replica retouches:

14. Baporo Ferrari (458 Italia GT3)

20171225205936.jpg
20171225205958.jpg
20171225205948.jpg

This one is based off the livery of an Italian team which ran a 458 GT2 in the GT Open. I didn't find much challenge creating this one to be honest. The hardest part was picking the correct shade of blue.

15. Team Dark Dog (458 Italia GT3)

20171225210053.jpg
20171225210103.jpg
20171225210041.jpg

This one turned out better than how I expected. Loading the .SVG files were a massive PITA because they just refused to go under the file size limit, but I got there in the end. I went with some red-accented minor sponsors to help flesh out the colour scheme a bit more.

16. Konrad Motorsport (Huracan GT3)

4899986834736578568_23.jpg

20171225210007.jpg
20171225210031.jpg
20171225210017.jpg

Last livery for the day. Again, choosing the correct colour was an issue. PD should've allowed us to enter CSS hexcodes! Anyway, the Konrad Motorsport logo has been substituted for a minor sponsor, 'Skykick', so this is still a replica retouch, not a 1:1 replica.

Recently, my less-than-stellar internet connection has been sulleying my livery creation, as well as my GT Sport experience as a whole. From Boxing Day, I was only able to get on earlier today, with my mobile phone. Technicians from my ISP are only able to serve us to increase the line speed on Tuesday, so this is all I have for now:

17. RAM Racing (458 Italia GT3)

5917748673484193808_0.jpg

5773633493597716496_0.jpg

I had these .svg logos sitting in my library since I got the game. After much pondering, I stumbled upon them again and found that they would go decently with a blue/white livery. Which they did, retouching a replica of a British LMES team that ran a 458 GT2. My only issue was that the blue stripe bends a bit too far downwards on the sides, but at least I got the team logo right.

Finally back online to post again:

18. Pietersen Automotive (R8 LMS)

Was feeling really under the weather when I started on this one, and the drugs I administered didn't help either, because I appended the family name to this one. When I got better and sobered up, I realised this one wasn't my best; not because it is untidy, but because it's very basic and elementary and feels like a step back when I'm supposed to be constantly improving.

19. BitFenix Racing (650S GT3)

More than made up for it with this one though. It seems like the 650S has produced the canvas for my most-liked designs so far. It seems like drugs and the GT Sport Livery Editor don't mix.

I decided not to make this one too busy, as the loud colours would be enough to make it stand out. I am really starting to enjoy making the shapes flow around the wheelarches.

This one looks very Project CARS-esque to me, I think that the main sponsor being in Times New Roman has something to do with it. But still, it works, and it is refreshing to see a dark design after all the bright ones I've made.

I never had a plan for this one. I got this car as a daily workout gift, and decided to paint it all black. The rest of the design I made up on the spot, taking advantage of the lines on the car. I also made use of a custom Gr. 3 number insignia for the first time.

Decided to look at GTR2 for inspiration this time, and took on the livery of a team which raced in the IMSA Sportscar series. I struggled to find a few sponsors, but I managed to find suitable replacements, making this one a replica retouch.

I wanted to go for something more 'regal' this time. And what classier way to show that then with a design adorned with gold trim? After juggling Hackett and Etihad as main sponsors, I eventually settled with Harrods. The Gr.3 number insignia makes its second appearance.

25. Massive Motorsports (Vantage GT3)

Another replica retouch. The 'mascara' around the headlights found on the real-life livery was very challenging to recreate, due to the awkward way the shapes bend around the front wheelarches. For the main sponsor, I went with something both native to the origin country of the team, and having colours analogous to that country's flag.

Slightly better than my previous R8 LMS effort, but I still feel that it's not quite there yet. This will be my last white-based design for a while, as it is annoying and time consuming to operate with shapes that are the same base colour as the base colour of the car itself.

27. Gulf Team Orion (650S GT3)

20180203181758.jpg

I don't know if it's a coincidence at this point, but for the second time I decide to create a livery for the R8, a 650S livery follows. And it's the same outcome, the R8's design seems thrown together in comparison to the natural flowing of the McLaren. This design comes from the Gulf livery which was proposed when the MP4-12C first entered motorsport. It wasn't used though, so I decided to paint it on a 650S (and have some fun with gradients again.)

This will be my last white-based design for a while, as it is annoying and time consuming to operate with shapes that are the same base colour as the base colour of the car itself.

When I work on white cars or when I have to use a special color as a base and cover it, I always change the base coat to a fluorescent paint (orange, blue, sometimes green, depending of the masking I have to do). That way, it highlights all the non-covered zones you could miss. I paint the car with the "good" colour only at the last minute.

They say to slap that like button, but I think my finger just fell off!

I'd totally use all of these all the time, but I hate using other liveries I download on my cars instead of my own design. For me it's cheating when I use a premade livery because then I didn't try to make anything for that car. But just know that if I did "cheat", these would be the ones I'd use.

Not my first crack at a design for a Japanese Gr.3 vehicle, I decided to stick closer to the cues of the original, and produce a minimal, two-tone design, not too dissimilar to the NSX design I did a while back. Not sure if purple is a very French colour though, the original main sponsor colour was purple, so I decided to invert it.

29. Jaguar Racing Alternate 1 (F-Type Gr.3)

Been wanting to do a design for the Jaguar for a while, and was really tapped for ideas. The orange/silver colour combination has been floating around my head for days now, and it seems to strike modern elegance. And what better personification of modern elegance than a Jaguar F-Type? This is an original flavour livery, finished off in beautiful pewter.

Hey guys, thanks for your positive feedback! It is really appreciated. Taking a break here to ask for some deeper insights into my design creation processes, as I feel that I can always improve from some good critiquing. There are a few questions I'd like to ask:

  1. With regards to the numbering which I use for fictional cars, and having adopted a standard number insignia for them, starting with the Lancer Gr.3, do you think yellow numbering is the correct way to go, in terms of visibility? If not, which other colour should it be?
  2. Am I overdoing it with the wheel-arch shapes? Do they need to become less repetitive?
  3. Are you bothered, in any way, by the fact that I sometimes forget to place extinguisher and kill switch signs on my cars?
  4. Likewise, with replica retouches, the fact that I sometimes eschew class decals?
All of your constructive responses would be welcome!

Sure. I’ll do the optional user survey.

1: Take a good look at the real life version of the number plate that you are using on google. What colour do they use in real life? If it’s a fictional number plate, does the colour you are using make it difficult to read during a race replay? The solution might change depending on the answer.

2: Wheel arch shapes can add much needed flow to a design and serve as a good bordering tool, however designs that have a sharper or boxier theme are not the best candidate for the wheel arches. Use it only on liveries that are mostly blank or feature a flowing design.

3: Always include the kill switch and extinguisher decals, not only does it increase the realism of the design, but more importantly safety first!

4: Class decals are good if the livery you are designing is a replica or used in an online series or championship where it is agreed upon that everyone will be using the same class decal. On a design that is being used for open lobbies or sport mode, it’s not necessary for liveries that aren’t replicas.

Ah, it's that time of the week again...

30. X-Race (R8 LMS)

Finally, an R8 LMS design that I am pleased with. I instantly knew that the Laguna Blue coat would look wonderful against the backdrop of the Nordschleife in late afternoon conditions. And what better car to represent the 'ring than the Audi R8? Simplicity it seems, is the key to achieving an aesthetically pleasing design on this car.

31. Seegreen Motorsports (911 RSR)

Arguably my most ambitious design yet. And it was made up on the spot. I had the initial plan to make an all-green design, then the grey appeared. The gradient is there to mask the texture difference between the body colour and the decals. The plant design is unlike anything I've done before, and if it's positively received, I'll maybe think of doing it again.

With my birthday being yesterday, I had to interrupt my usual schedule, so that it can only be released now, on Sunday evening (GMT). Anyways, some of you might have noticed that I had released these liveries on gran-turismo.com as early as Thursday, so I have made them well in advance.

Remember when I said that I was done from making white liveries indefinitely? Well I found a workaround for that. The matte white coat. It allowed me to make this, one of my busiest liveries. Only fitting that it would be on an American car.

A busy weekend once again means that this week's liveries are only dropping now. Remember, the links are in the titles:

34. Kingston Technologies (M6 GT3 '16)

After the busy designs of last week, I decided to relax it a bit with some minimalistic designs. The first of which graces the BMW M6 which I won as a daily workout gift. I went with some sharper lines here, and went with a decal in each of the front radiator closings.

35. Hyundai Motorsport Alternate 1 (Genesis Gr.3)

An original flavour design, not unlike the NSX. I'm really starting to enjoy working with the patterns over the basic shapes (and with the special colours too.) Again. the radiator closings are home to sponsor decals.

Since this is the third week in a row that I am unable to post my new designs on Saturday, I have decided to designate Sunday as the official release day for my designs. It kind of makes sense in a way.

36. GrowthPoint (FT-1 Gr.3)

This is my first time incorporating local brand sponsors into a design. I decided to go with GrowthPoint Properties due to their outrageous colour scheme. Definitely going to do more local ones in the future.

37. ZTE Racing (SLS AMG GT3 '11)

Really simple design here, all the design quirks which you'd find on my other liveries are present here (wheelarch circles, gradients, near-perfect continuity etc.)

Ah yes, post number 1000. I know it's still a long way to go before I'm up there, but I know I'll get there. Anyway, I thought that it would be appropriate to make this post as attractive as possible, with two new attractive designs:

38. M86 Security (650S GT3)

4764821673533768729_23.jpg

6278664464460939280_0.jpg

6278101512362131472_0.jpg

6125542074850738192_0.jpg

Okay, I'm saying it now: The 650S GT3 is my favourite car to do designs for, hands down. It's where I can bring out flowing shapes and colour complements without it feeling forced or unsatisfactory. Looking at the main sponsor, the '86' typeface resembles the numeral typeface used for the default livery, so I decided that it would look great on a McLaren. Not one to boast, but I wasn't wrong at all.

39. Toyota Racing Espanol (FT-1 Gr.3)

5765171645665804809_23.jpg

5116182715379482640_0.jpg

5116745662646452240_0.jpg

5116745665330807824_0.jpg

When I purchased this colour in Mileage Exchange, I initially thought 'This would look great with a Dr. Pepper decal'. My second thought was that I would probably never be satisfied with it, and there are already those who make designs with big corporate names better than me. I only specialise in lesser known sponsors and race replicas. As you may have noticed, I have now adopted the colour of red for racing numbers when they have the ficitional insignia. I may hand these out when I get around to starting an online league, and that is when I learn how to race properly. (Seriously, my DR is only C.)

New designs have just raced in:

40. Pietersen Automotive (AMG GT3 '16)

Another entrant for the family racing team, this time I decided to take a more artistic approach. You can see the inspiration from the West-era McLaren Mercedes in the pattern design as well as the colour scheme. Really pleased how this one turned out.

41. Petroheads Racing (M6 GT3 '16)

Brand new approach here. I realised that the fictional decal sponsors were sort of just sitting there, and I didn't even know what they consisted of. At the time, I was tapped for fictional team names, as I couldn't designate every design as belonging to one team, and I couldn't name every design after their main sponsor (Elastoplast Racing? Come on.) There are some very fitting fictional team logos which PD has kindly provided us with, and expect to see more of them with upcoming designs.

My latest stuff:

The same principles apply here. Fictional team name, this time I found something German. The main sponsor - Wolf Klimatechnik - gave me an idea of adorning the car with an arctic-like theme. I think that it paid off quite handsomely, and I'm really pleased with the way that it turned out.
And now, with the onset of Super GT debuting in GT Sport, there was only one design that I was itching to make again:

43. CASTLE CREDIT MUGEN NSX GT (RAYBRIG NSX CONCEPT-GT '16)

At last, the design that has been gracing my avatar has finally been painted on the car it was meant for! Although it's a bit of a stretch to say that as I've grown to like the Gr.3 NSX quite a bit. This would be more like an evolution of the old design, complementing it in the best possible way, while also mimicking the look of a Super GT team.

Back once again to spew my creativity all over this thread:

44. Tim Hodges Racing (Viper GT3-R)

Been wanting to design another livery for the Viper for a while now. I thought of going with a quite unconventional colour
combination here, to sort of emphasise a 'pseudo-futuristic' look. (By the way, what is the Tim Hodges brand? I just assumed
that is was some design studio which branched out into racing. Still, pleased with the way it turned out.)

45. Mistral Motorsport (Corvette C7 Gr.3)

After discovering the powder decal finish, this looks like the next best thing since sliced bread. It gives the car surface a wonderful
'pastel-like' feel, and reacts beautifully to light. (Disclaimer: Okay I admit that this livery is not actually an original design. The
base colours are taken from the AAI Motorsports Corvette C7R, and since I couldn't find any of the decals online, I decided
to take matters into my own hands here. I mean, this isn't the C7R right?)

This week, I decided to focus on one car, namely the 458 Italia GT3:

46. BBT Racing (458 Italia GT3)

Had to hunt for some of the decals for this one, but thanks to @Akwaaba, I was able to find them. This is a replica retouch of a design from the Asian GT, with some country/locale-relevant sponsors added. Expect more like these in the future.

47. Spirit of Race (458 Italia GT3)

This one caught my eye as a simple, but eye-catching design. I decided to inject some of my own flavour into it, with the country-relevant sponsors. British Racing Green has never looked cooler on a car that isn't British.
