Hell yeah, brother! Will you build me one of those vehicles? 😈
I hear you on the snoozing cruise controllers....that's why I'm kinda glad I've never had it...there's something about having to modulate the accelerator yourself that promotes...ahhh.....what's it called?......Oh yeah! Paying attention to what you're doing. I drive fast (usually ~80 mph on the highway) but I'm paying attention. And a cop would tell me I'M the hazard...not the dip**** who's half-asleep but trundling along at 60 mph. I don't buy it.
I suspect I may not live for very long after I build and test it - but it will be worth it.
I do a lot of interstate driving, and sit on cruise control at about 5-12kmh over the limit. Thanks to speed cameras and overzealous policing 90% of Australians are under the impression that if you do more than 100kmh on the highway your car will burst into flames.
I don't sit in the passin lane.
One thing cruise has shown though - people can not drive at a constant speed.
There's two things that tick me off:
- you sit on a cruise controlled 105-110kmh. You pass a car sitting in the ppassing lane doing 80-85. Three minutes later the same car goes past at about 120kmh. Ten minutes you pass the same car which is doing 80-85kmh. Repeat until extremely irritated.
- people without cruise seem to be able to detect cars that have cruise. They will often sit about 6-8 feet off your rear bumper matching speed for 50-60kmh. There's a good way to break this hypnotic spell: 1. Check your brakes are still working by pressing the brake pedal really hard. 2. Depress clutch, and put car in third (at 110kmh). Release clutch. Ahhh - sudden deceleration without brakelights - always a good one to wake a sleeping tailgater...
