To me, one of GT3's most annoying traits is the 'Tony Stewart' AI of GT3... a.k.a. they'll bump you to death with no mercy and apparently no apparent knowledge they're on your bumper. Since I don't know much about GT4, can somebody please give me the 411 on whether or not the AI has developed some common sense/patience?

apparently no apparent LOL. Ha common sense. You should have some atleast to know that since gt4 isnt out yet the final word on AI is not to be said. But from what i hear proluge AI is somewhat better. Then again watch the new LA video.

As you can understand, the only refence there is to answer your question is GT4 Prologue and some videos that you can find elsewhere in this forum.
But so far the answer has to be "no". Sadly, I have to say...

the ai has improved if u watch the paris tarmac video, u will see the improvement ^^

The AI from Prologue has the same engine as GT3. GT4's final version will have a brand new AI engine.

BTW those videos are on courses that are incomplete. In other words the AI doesn't work that well.

PD has said they plan on improving the AI over GT3's as they saw the GT3 AI as a major weak point of the game. I don't have any sources on this as i heard it a long time ago in an article, but im sure many others remember PD saying this.

No, the whole point of my post was to point out that PD has promised a substancial improvement. You stated it will be a new AI engine.

Not to be mean, but this has already been discussed several times before. Even I've made threads about the AI. As much as I can tell, we'll have to wait and see what will become of the AI for GT4. Meanwhile, use a search and take a look at some of the commentary GTP members (including myself) have stated. Until then, you may reply on.

ah, I see, thanks for clearing up.

I heard from a reputable source that all AI was removed from GT4.

But don't quote me on that.

:) Sorry i just had to quote you there.

But seriously, removing the AI? Then i realy hope they replace it with something, then again it won't be too different to what we have now. :sly:

Yeah, they replaced it with a paper bag. You get the same effect.

I don't know how they coded a paper bag into the game, but it sounds interesting.

There's actually a problem here, the Search system ignores words under 3 characters long, hence 'AI' gets canned, making it a chore to find topics on this subject. I just went through the 15 most recent pages of threads, so what, 300, 450 in total and found one. "Artificial intelligence" returns 0 too.

GTs AI is no better than a Scaletric cars, they follow a set line through the tracks. The only 'AI' is trying to go back to those lines if they are bumped off.

So they'd need a new AI engine, because basically the AI cars are 👎

I have a feeling no matter how good they make it, most people will still eventually find them dull to race against. As long as they don't have that damn catchup effect like in GT3, that was the suckitude.

Question : GT4 AI improved?
Answer : No!

Catchup logic seems a bit regressive in something that is supposed to be "the Real Driving Simulator".

As for dullness, motorsport in general has cars restricted to these lines, so maybe it just seems worse than it is because realistic racing paths seem odd in a game.

What i realy have a problem with though is when i go deep on the inside of another car, braking late into a corner, the other car has no problem with ramming into me, not bothering to evade, maybe if we had a damage model we wouldn't have soo much ramming. Try ramming in DTM/Toca/V8 Race Driver and you quickly find out it's VERY bad for your race, so what you get is drivers valueing their cars and an AI that does everything they can not to hit you, even if it means giving up a position. GT doesn't need to do this since there is no damage. Sorry for going off on a tangent, lets not have this thread turn into one about damage, i understand that modeling damage would be hard and there are liscence issues and all that, im not even asking for damage for now, im just saying it would force PD to create better AI.

Its not only the AI needs improving in GT4 to make better/more realistic racing - the way the cars 'interact' with each other whan they collide needs a major overhaul as well. If you ram another car or if an computer car hits you the cars barely move off-line, if you tap another cars side towards the rear - in reality that car would become very unstable and probably spin - in GranTurismo you get none of this. The cars feel far too solid and planted - when you drive a real car on the limit it feels exactly that - on the limit! for me this is GT's greatest problem - especially when they are aiming for perfection.

Well we're all praying for an improved sense of speed which will bring your 'on the limit' feeling hopefully. I agree the AI is monotonous but I don't expect anything revolutionary to be on the table.

As long as on-track action doesn't become as intimidating and unfair as Pole Position (that is, rear-end or side-swipe a car, car go BOOM!!!, and you'll eventually lose the race), I'm happy no matter what.

GT4P sense of speed and actual sense of suspension movement and weight transfer coupled to the action of the DFP, leads to a far more realistic feeling of the limit than GT3.

The problem with Gt3 Ai cars when you hit them, is that the AI is to good, it instantly reacts in a way to prevent them from spinning out, which you can see in replay with the indicators on, the AI engine will brake and adjust acceleration & steering input instantly, the moment it feels loss of grip, unfortunatley this is also how the AI drive for the whole race, which leads to them being to slow in corners, often breaking as soon as the tyres begin to squeel even if they are way off the outer limits of the track, and they never really race upto or beyond the limits at any time, apart from the odd location where the line is wrong and you constantly see incidents at a select few locations in GT3.

Heres hoping they developed a completely new engine, that trys harder, makes errors and has pace and manages to actually react to whats going on around them.

Well, if Polyphony needs a shining example of AI done right, I fully welcome them to pick up a copy of GPL/N4/N02/N03:D

I have played all 4 and have got to say Papyrus's AI engine is one of the best around. If you slam on the brakes (and flat spot your tires) they slam on the brakes (except they don't flat spot their tires :grumpy: ). If someone spins out, the AI does the best they can to get out of their way. Of course, PD has a long way to go on that one :D

Maybe by Gran Turismo 6 on the Playstation 3 we'll have AI advanced enough to follow your pit strategy and driving line :sly: That would be 'true' AI.

On a side note, the Papyrus engine also has excellent collision detection; you can actually spin the AI out.

Some GREAT AI can be found in Sierra's VIPER RACING. There are one or two spots where they will make consistant minor errors, but the level at which they respond to other cars, and make minor mistakes and then correct for them, is very impressive. They'll draft off you or eachother, hold off on a pass until the right moment, and evade a car that is about to loose control. Its pretty amazing for a game that old. If you are driving the wrong way on the track and approch them head on, they will see you, slam on the brakes, and steer off the course to keep from hitting you!

I gotta agree with TheCracker... the "on rails" approach to the AI cars needs a major overhauling... there's also several other factors that will improve competition like HP/Vehicle restrictions... having the AI cars use similar modifications and tuning as opposed to the stock versions that normally run. The most competitive GT3 race was the Vitz series b/c you were driving the most similar car as the AI... but by jacking yours up with mods and having longer lasting tires it was still relatively easy to win, but it was somewhat more competitive.

If they don't improve what and how the AI cars race against you then at least have more restrictions as to what you can race and give the AI cars comparable cars... obviously a tuned Viper is going to blow the doors off a Midget II n'est pas.

Greyout, that's essentially NR2003's AI, in terms of behavior.

Hey, cool, the Midget 2 is back!

Of course, the console version of Nascar Blunder 2004 has some pretty interesting AI with the Allies & Enemies feature i.e. they have kinda like a meter, if you bump them it goes into the negative, bump them more and bring the red meter higher than 50 and they'll actually try to hit you, and the opposite, the 'friend side', can be brought into the green by sharing a draft. Cool concept, needs just a little bit of work.

Off Topic:
So people would like to say that they want a tougher AI in GT4? Ok, let put it this way, you're using a fully decked out [R]Escudo and you're racing at the Test Track and you're having a headache on how to beat a stock Midget II. Is that what you guys are complaining? I think I like GT4 to leave it as it is and no more B.S. about its AI.

I Smell Bull coming from the post above.

The AI does need a major overhaul, GT3's was complete crap even when you had an inferior car so the AI could keep up with you they drove like you wernt there.
