This has probably been discussed many times before. But this is my wish list of features for future version of GT (and possibly for GT4). Maybe the PS3 will enable these things to be reality:

Track/Envoirnment

1. Enviornmental Effects - Leaves (apparently on GT Conecpt in the Autumn Ring), dust, gravel.
2. Localised track surfaces - traction differences in Pot holes, bumps, manhole covers, puddles. Plus, the marbles effect when certain cars are racing. Sega Rally 2 seems to have puddles that have an impact on handling. I seem to think Papyrus' Indycar Racing 2 modelled the racing line 'marbles effect' where getting off line made things really slippy.
3. Real-time lighting changes linked to the console system clock (as Animal Crossing and Zelda Ocrina of Time).
4. Variable weather - Rain (with windscreen wipers (as Colin McRae Rally 3+)
5. Temperature & air pressure - with its effect on grip levels, tyre wear and effectiveness of engine power.

Car

1. Real 3D dashboard - cabin view - as GTR, LiveforSpeed, Racer etc.
2. Head Inerta (as Psygnosis' F1 series)
3. More simulation of car health - Oil Pressure, Engine Temperature. (as Geoff Crammond F1GP series)
4. More simulation of technical problems - Oil Leak, Overheating, Punctures and subsequent graphical effects - smoke from the engine bay, wheels rolling down the track etc... (again, as Geoff Crammond F1GP series)
5. Car damage (much requested :)) this looks to have been done very well in the new S2 release of Live For Speed.
6. Failure of suspension components and other components due to driving the car hard. Maybe each major component in the car could have a 'wear indicator' that showed how much life was left in it. This would fit well as a penalty when buying a second hand car - a penlty which didn't really exist with versions of GT with 2nd hand card. This would also have budget conserderations while you were racing; if components had to be replaced. A driving stragtegy that balanced speed with being gentle with the car, to minimize wear and damage, would then have to be adapted.

Physics

1. Car rolling Physics.
2. Better impact physics.

I think the policy that DP tend to follow is that if it can't be modelled/displayed in an extremely high quality way then it stays out of the game. I respect this and I think this has served them well, but in future this will become less of an excuse.

What would you like to see?

Yeah, I was hoping this would be more a 'technology no object' discussion really. Also inviting comments from those who have observed 'must have' features in other simulations (and are well implemented) that are lacking in GT.

add reverse lights. hehehehehehhehe.

I expect GT4 to be a very polished and prettier version of GT3 with a few additions. The real and dramatic stuff wont be till GT5 witch should be a whole new ball game.

There could be technical failures, dynamic weather changes and much more realistic car physics(crash, etc) . Visual damage is not a huge requirement but it would be great to see the cars break apart. And most of all, get my hands on GT4!!..... lets just wait and see ....

>cudadude2
Yeah, I agree with you in that I expect GT4 to be similar to what GT2 was to GT - some graphical and physics improvements with more quantity in terms of cars and tracks.
I suppose that completion of coding on GT4 has come at the right time for DP: The development kits for the PS3 are due to be sent out early next year (maybe even earlier for DP if they are producing tech demos for Sony when they announce the PS3 details). I think for GT5 they should take a larger gap between the next version than there was between GT2 and GT3 to really nail down the must have features like car damage and life-like AI.

GT4P is completely different from GT3 and I doubt GT4 will just be prologue with extra cars/tracks.

Does anyone think that the GT series will be ported over to the PC in the future or is there an exclusive arrangement between PD and Sony prohibiting this?

What would be the advantages/disadvantages of doing this and will the PS3 make this irrelevant?

Why irrelevant? ...because of the PC's ability to import/exchange new skins, car types, tracks, downloading real weather, vehicle dynamics tweaking etc...

Lets not make this a PC vs PS bash fest.

Probably will never be on PC. If so it wouldn't be for a few years. PD and sony are too closely related. The only reason PS2 sell is because it has excellent games, it is basically outclassed in every other area. They would never give up this advantage by letting there best games (or at least good games that they have control of) slip to other systems or the PC. Someone mentioned that the only way we may see GT on PC is if there was a way to make it only work on sony's own Vaio comps.

Can't you download PS2 emulators somewhere?......I'm sure that is a way in which you could play it on computer but I don't think the graphics would be improved thou. Besides why would you want to.....GT has been engineered for the Playstation and I think that bond will never change.....also, the PS3 is gonna be so amazing that you won't want GT5 on computer!

3. Real-time lighting changes linked to the console system clock (as Animal Crossing and Zelda Ocrina of Time).

They did this in Metropolis Street Racing and it sucked ass, I was always playing at night because I was at work or school during the day. Sure its a nice little thing to add 'realism' but in a video game its a horrible idea. :grumpy:

okay if technology were not an issue? Then what I would like to see in GT5, considering that PS2 already has an ethernet port, I would like to see GT5 linked to GPS and a much improved digitalglobe/satellite data, so I could drive anywhere in the world.

Jeppeson already offers real-world weather data, so that could be easily implemented. In fact Microsoft flight simulators use Jeppeson realworld weather. Which makes me wonder, why not have Microsoft merge the flight simulator with GT5, so while I'm driving around, there are actual airplanes in the sky, better yet, dogfights with combat simulator. I might have to swerve around a downed F18.

Hey, why stop there. PD shouldn't have to bother with creating 3D spectators either. It should be a no-brainer to merge SIms2 into the globally realized GT5. THen I could put my sims in my house right here in Fullerton.

Oh yeah, lets not forget weapons, because hey, HalfLife2 has to go in there somewhere.

what else? First person perspective would needed, and I should be able to order PapaJohns pizza without leaving the game. The in-dash radio in the cars should be able to tune in actual radio stations, or access my MP3 files on the network.

I have so many more ideas...

So you want Grand Theft Auto VII ??!? Sweet. 👍

>GT4P is completely different from GT3 and I doubt GT4 will just be prologue with extra cars/tracks.

I'd be willing to bet that there is a significant amount of shared code between GT3 and GT4P. Why rewrite the game engine. Its more evolution than anything else. So, respectfully, I disagree with that.

I forgot Metropolis Street Racer had the day/night system link. I thought it was well implemented actually (from a technical standpoint). From a gaming point of view it could get a little irritating racing the same lighting conditions (if you played the game at the same point in the day) until you got the function that allowed you to change it. I think I'm just saying the ability to change the lighting would be nice. Or a 24hr Le Mans race with real time lighting....

just change your time on the ps2 clock then.

I had to do it in TXR3 to get stupid wanderers to challenge me, it's not too hard.

edit: sorry, dreamcast clock. :dunce:

Listen up.
Just to quell any doubts...
PD started from the ground up on this game.
I'm sure some of the coding is similar in nature to GT3, but PD has stated that it is all new programming. That includes a new physics engine (most likely closely based on the old one), a new "efficiency" system for the processes (to push the PS2 farther than it's ever been), and a new way of research and development (perfected after 8 years in the market).

I believe it MIGHT be the most highly developed, most researched, most realistic, and best thought-out piece of software ever released.
Despite what all us computer users (and the Xboxers) might think about the PS2, it may very well prove to be the best and most realistic graphics ever seen in a video game. EVER!

Yeah...that's right.

most realistic graphics ever seen in a video game. EVER!

Half life 2? I swear, those facial animations are something else. In fact HL2 probs beats it on every point, been in dev longer then GT4 :D. Plus, ITS HALF LIFE ARGGG!!!!!!!

You ARE right, code_kev.
Except for the realistic part.
Remeber--it's Half-Life...it takes place in locations that don't exist...you fight monsters that don't exist...you shoot guns that don't exist.

Since you seem to be such a big fan of Ha;f_life 2, I have one question.
Have you played Far Cry?
