GT4 holdup! = HDD problems?!?

Hopefully Sony will maintain it's for the most part free online community. If anything offering the downloads free would be more of an incentive for most gamers to go out and buy the network adapter (something the majority of PS2 owners DON'T have). I wouldn't see pay systems coming to fruition until PS3 where i'm sure the network ports will be built right into the box.

Didn't we agree that the delay was cause because of photo mode? Didn't KY say that that's what caused the delay? Isn't the HDD just "compatible" with GT4? Am I asking too many questions which I already know the answer to?

...

i think the consensus on the delay was due to lag and problems with the online play. At E3 this year KY said they had resolved the problems that were plaguing them at E3 in 2003.

Playstation should take up what xbox have done with Live.....pay a fee that allows you access to all content for 12 months.....I think stuff like extra splinter cell missions were free on xbox.....stuff like that (correct me if im wrong.....I'm a ps2 guy ONLY! :) ).

What he said.

I like the PGR2 idea, too. Like releasing a car&track-pack and let people download it all after purchasing it. And every like, three or four months a new pack should come out.

Anyways, if people are too avaricious about paying for tracks and cars, there for sure will be some illegal offers for these people (I hope I didn't hurt AUP now!)

And Jaguar - I don't mean to single you out, but Sony will definitely not be losing focus on the PS2 ;) Their estimates indicate at least 2/3 of the PS2 sales (hardware and software) still remain. This Christmas will be a big PS2 push, as will the next one, and probably the next one. They would rather see a smooth overlap of console generations rather than the huge cycles we see now - keeps shareholders and accountants much happier. The software companies also see sales continuing on the original PS, and many are unhappy they moved their dev teams to the PS2 so quickly. Expect to see many hire new devs rather than cut into their old teams until 2006 or so.

I'm not saying they'll lose focus on PS2 but after this Christsmas Sony's main focus, in Europe, US and Japan, will be the PS3.

Like the PSONE they'll still sell significant numbers of PS2s, but these will be to non hardcore gamers looking for a bargain.

After GT4, and a couple of other releases, my focus will certainly switch to PS3 and Xbox 2 for that matter as well.

Expanding on Carbon Fiber Man's post.........I think that, and everyone else would love to have all the latest cars for the years to come. As pointed out, there are cars out all the time and PD should definately cram all they can for the disk release and then work on to get more cars for add on's later (and not just think that they can charge you for it later whihc really annoys me!). I was thinking that the best way they could do that is to release ADD ON PACKS......like a disk that would cost lets say maybe £6 or somthing with all the latest.....2005 models for example, hell include new tracks aswell!! :D . This would obviously require the HDD to load em into the game but......It would save u needing Broadband, the network adaptor and paying a probably stupidly high subscription fee.

On another note......I heard that GTA SA is going to be one of the very few games to be put onto the 'rare' dual layered playstation 2 DVD ROM disk to hold its huge amount of data.........hmmm, GT4......lots of data......makes me wonder

Nope :):).

I don't believe that the holdup is because of the HDD, I believe it is because they are adding more tracks. They have all the cars modelled, they're just doing the tracks. They misjudged how long it would take to make the tracks. Have you seen the WIP tracks? Would you like to drive on those?

They are from GT4:P last year, they were unfinnishe then but they'll be done by now, look at the vid of the ring, it's complete at E3. I would say it's a combination of content, online and AI.

We've all seen the videos of the PD guys driving all those fabulous sports cars around the track. If I had access to that kind of machinery, I know my job-related duties would suffer! Too much track time, not enough programming time=delays;)

I hate the idea of downloading "bonus" content for games. I don't plan on racing on line, so why would I like the idea? This could be a hoax, but it sounds real.

If there was on line downloadable content available, it should be for free. If not, I see people selling memory cards on eBay for profit. But, if this questionaire was for the PS3, then that might not happen since there might not be a memory card used for the system. But, then we would probably see people selling the game with the downloadable content on it. so...

Like everything else on Earth from half-eaten Tacos to debris from the Columbia disaster, people will of course try to sell things for profit on Ebay. The proportion of people doing that compared to those buying the content the real way is tiny.

As for people who can't yet go online or don't want too - I'm pretty sure you guys are only going to get more and more shafted. Ever heard of planned obsolescence? Same principle.

I don't think it's hdd problems. The latest Final Fantasy game has been using the hdd, and so has the PS2 Linux kit, so the hdd should be pretty well ironed out by now, as far as the faults. If you have to buy updates, then they're no longer updates, it's something more like a "mission pack." Seeing as to how GT Concept never made it to America, this could be PD's means of not having to worry about customs and import fees and all of that garbage, but I really don't think that for GT4 you would have to buy new cars and tracks. Like stated earlier, when racing online, I seriously doubt PD would let users have cars that cost extra $$ (real, not pseudo "GT credits you earn from races), while users without dishing out extra money get shafted and can only use the original cars. Now here's a general question: is there any difference between languages between the different regional releases of the game? I know that with mod chips/swap disks you can play any region game on any PS2, but would there be regional downloads? Or would the same download work the same on an NTSC PS2 as it would on a PAL PS2?

Eh, I might pay a maximux of $3 for DLC. Anymore than that it probably isn't worth having. If they wanted to cram more stuff into the game, why wouldn't they just put it on 2 discs (ala GT2...just not crappy. ) ?

I sincerely HATE the idea of downloadable content :grumpy: and, even more, having to pay for it. :yuck:
Many of you complained that buying the Network Adaptor, the HDD and the game is more than enough.
I agree because, in my country, everything PlayStation 2-related is non-official (thanks Sony for NOT SELLING THE PS2 IN BRAZIL... bunch of idiots) making us have to pay what importers want us to pay.
Here, the game ($49,99 in US) will cost the equivalent to US$ 80, the Network Adapter is at the same price range and the HDD goes as high as US$ 200...
That's simply too much for my wallet, so I'll be very happy if I can buy just the game and be able to access everything without any need to get online with my PS2.

From what I understand about replays and car models from the Hybrid forum, the actual car data is all the same, the format, everything is identical, except the very first line of file say something to the effect of "Region=US" or "Region=EU", and that has to be changed accordingly. We can edit that atm so I'm sure PD would just have a simple conversion system based on your region, assuming it's even an issue.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I really don't see any problems with paying for more content (provided, of course, that the original game I spent $50 on was worth it). Say GT4 is released with 700 cars, 100 tracks, etc... I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks a couple months down the road for things like updated cars (new models/models left out), new tracks, new features (drag racing anyone?). Obviously the game should be worth the original investment out of the box, but adding extra content down the road to keep things fresh seems like a good idea.

If they did full packs like 20 cars and 2 tracks for £2.99 then I'd maybe consider it as it's not much considering the content, but 50p for one car and I'd say bugger off to PD.

^^ For 20 cars and 2 tracks, I'd probably be willing to spend $10 (depending on the quality of the cars and tracks of course).

if that was the case, i think PD would hve been smart enuf to sell us the game then sell us another GT with all the other tracks for more profit or make them downloadable for xtra profit. So i don think thats the cause, coz PD is not that nice to make more tracks for us. Money speaks louder than words.

*3rd edit lol :) (im still sleepy)

No one would want to buy GT4 it it had half finnished tracks with no scenery. Money does speak louder than words, so ruining GT's future by release a sham of a game would not be in PD's or Sony's best interests when making GT4 a fantastic game keeps the series future safe. However I do think his reason for the delay is flawed I dissagree with you.

Can somebody find some links about this:

I heard on G4TechTV that Yamauchi was putting some PR devices into place
where GT4 would actually be considered entry-level motorsports.
Supposedly, some real-life racing schools have indicated that the game could be very useul for classroom instruction and simulator time.
So, theoretically, if you are good at GT4, and make your records available, you could end up recieving offers or invitations to come to racing school.

It was also reported that PD will continue to make downloadable content for GT4
that will be completely free.

Regarding the delay, it also has to do with Sonys marketing strategy for the PS2.

For example, if you had not noticed, every time GT4 is put back, so is Halo 2, and vice versa.

These 2 games are going head to in the sales chart. They are the respective manufactuers big hitters of the year.

I have a CRAZY CRAZY idea, mehbeh the hold up is because the game isn't finished/ good enough for public release yet? Yeah I know, it's insane, but think about it!!!

*sarcasm mode off*

You know what Code, I have that same crazy idea, it's a pity there arn't more people with this crazy idea out there.

Reasons for the delay of a game:
1. They are not done.
2. Market strategy.
3. They are too stupid to take a right guess at how long it would take to make the game.
4. GT4 is part of the so called Murder's Row and they won't release it much longer before Halo 3, Doom 3, GTA : San Andreas or the other games which are in the Murder's row are released.

EVERY good game has its delays. Some come even out like five years or more after their predicted release dates (Duke Nukem Forever should be the best example ;) ).

*_*

I'm going to be surprised if Duke Nukem Forever ever comes out. Even if it does, I expect a Daikatana experience.

PD are too stupid to take a guess at how long it takes to make a game eh? Sorry, that's Valve. Did PD ever actually specify a release date that's subsequently slipped? I thought the November 2004 announcement at E3 2004 was the first official release announcement they made.

I think I'm certifiably crazy too btw.

They did say it would be out by christmas 2003, but then they delayed it and gave us Prologue

I seriously doubt that PD is worried about other games and their release.
Sales of GT4 won't be brought down by games like Halo2 or GTA.
People will buy those games regardless of GT4.
I will buy GT4 regardless of those games.
Even though I would like to get an XBox so I could play Halo2.
And I will buy San Andreas for PS2 regardless of when it or GT4 go on sale.
PS2 owners will buy GT4 because it will be the finest and best piece of software ever created for the system.

Yeah they might be competing on the sales charts but they're aimed at entirely different markets, on different consoles no less... I'd have thought one company would welcome getting the jump on the other...
