The newer versions of the PS2 don't even have an I-Link Port unfortunately! Sony Dropped it on later versions because of online gaming.......Although, If you get 2 systems that do have the port then I think you can because a LAN game is an option in GT4......

I can confirm that there is no i-Link option in GT4. Can you confirm that there is no LAN? I know that there's no online, but as far as I know there's LAN in every GT4 version. You know there is a difference, right?

Just out of morbid curiosity, what's needed to play via LAN? Does it require extra equipment (router, etc), or can you just plug two PS2's together through the network adapters? (for two-player races, anyway.. more than that would require a router, or whatever those things are called.. not much of a network guy anymore).

i think u can just use cat5 cable (crossover)?
more than 2 u will need a router?

but the network adapters are a b*tch to buy...
does anybody know if australia has a good quality of online games? (i.e servers, players, etc)

The technical term is "network switch" or "network hub". A router does something different (: Some devices are both a router and a switch.

Somewhere in the old threads (just after the GT4 release in Japan) it was mentioned that there was no iLink option in the Japanese version of GT4.

If that is true, I guess LAN games in GT4 must be played linking two PS2 through the Ethernet port (Slim PS2) or a network adapter (old PS2).

One thing I don't know is how do you play iLink races in GT3 with the new PS2. But I guess that question should be asked in the GT3 forum.

LAN = Local Area Network.

Technically, 2 or more players use a Hub (not a router) to connect multiple units (Ps2) together. Basically, you use cat cables (normal pc network cables do, don't buy the 'Sony' super expensive ones..) and connect them to the HUB. That's it.

The PS2s and/or GT4 games should detect the network automatically.

By looking it up in the game. As there's LAN for multiplayer games, why would we need i-Link anyway? LAN has been presented as the official successor of i-Link, so I don't see why you're asking this.

simple answer: you can't! No i-Link port => no i-Linking for GT3 and GTC on the PStwo.

It's a real shame that i-Link support was completely dropped on GT4. Me and my friends held some real intense LAN battles on GT3 using the i-Link port and an i-Link hub... Now, all of us are forced to buy a network adapter to play GT4.

Really sad. I have no reasons to buy a network adapter, so, I think I'll stick to GT3 for some multiplayer mayhem...

Here's a question that I've been thinking about. The original Halo supported LAN play, but eventually, sowtware became available to allow console to console online play by hooking into a home LAN. What's to say this isn't possible with GT4?

Even better, I tested it with FlyOut and TFX from Germany, and it works pretty well (as long as you get a ping below 40ms).

Welcome to Sony dicking over their consumers. To get four players on a console you have to buy the add-on Multi-Tap device. To get network you have to buy the add-on network adaptor. A hard drive? Buy the add-on. And now they've dropped something that was actually included before ... what gives?

If the next Playstation does not include four controller ports, a hard drive (or other large internal storage), and ethernet I will refuse to buy it.
