Hi to all. I had a brand new PSTwo, worked fine with all other GT series even GT4, BUT after 2 weeks of GT4 it will no longer play GT4. Went to Gamestation in Southend where I got GT4 and they exchanged it, but at the same time I had them check that the new one worked on their system, it did, then my old one, it did too, but still took the new copy of GT4 home........YEP you geussed it it did not work on mine!!!!!!!!! Every other PS2 title I have did but just not GT4, conclusion, naf PSTwo......back to Gamestation and they exchanged it, now all is fine but I will not use autosave just in case and I turn it off every 3 to 4 hours for a break to let it cool, but I fear GT4 is stressing the poor little boxes and getting them HOT under the collar. By the way my memory card was not corrupted at all, just the PSTwo itself died for GT4. ANyone got a clue as to why it would not play only GT4, is the game doing something it should not to the little boxes, is this an attack by aliens ????????????? I just hope my new one is ok and will run a small fan behind it for safety.!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope this isn't common, i brough a brand new PStwo monday.
If GT4 is killing the machine then ill just keep taking mine back under warrenty, gonna cost sony, teach them to give dodgy consoles or games which ever.

Mines been on for about 3-5 hours now.
3-5 hours is nothing. I think it is just a faulty console in any case. I'm sure that GT4 doesn't work the system any harder than some other games out there. I have it working on an old PS2 that wont play 1/2 my games and two new PS2 Slims.

Eh .. I wouldn't trust an electronical device that has a tendency to get very warm which does not include any sort of fan to cool off the internals. Its a cool looking, but stupid design.

Hey that's a shame, 3-5 hours? well I have mines on for atleast 6-8 hours a time, 25 hours if I have the endurance races...and my system acts fine.

I had my PStwo on for 3 days straight with GT4, and 5 days straight with GTA:SA. If it cooled properly, it will be fine.

my ps2 has a fan in the back of it.

This is not a good idea. The life expectancy of most electronic systems will decrease the more they are turned on and off (heating up and cooling down).

You just had bad luck and got a faulty PS2.
You can let it run 24/7 provided it does not heat up too much. For instance, it should not be placed on a thick carpet, but on a flat and cool surface.

The GTA series for example, are much more demanding to the console! The amount of code generating is much larger, also they are in continuous streaming so that you don't have any loadings! (or few)

So, my money on this case, is a faulty console

It does have a fan; it's just not an external fan. I suspect if the new slim PS2s are overheating it's because people are either not taking care of them or are using them on carpet, possibly both.

My PS2 sits on top of one of my computers, and the outside of the case gets warm but never hot... my laptop's case gets hotter.

IF GT4 is killing consoles, it's likely because it's a new game that pushes the console harder than many other games, and consequently it turns up components within the console that are not quite up to spec, but which run everything else just fine because they're not being pushed as hard. Sort of like how an overclocked CPU may be just fine in windows at 2.8GHz (from say, a stock 2.0) but to run a program that puts the CPU under 100% load without crashing, it has to be backed down to 2.75 or 2.7GHz.

The difference with the PS2 is that nothing is overclocked (one would think...) and the failures are due to components that are not quite up to spec, rather than being clocked too high.

i had my ps2 sitting on the carpet turned on for 7 days strait of gt4 last week 👍 - and i have a harddrive in it to which adds to heat - the only problem i had was a dusty disc (dust from the carpet, etc. had staticaly stuck to the new disc. 👎

Mine feels hottest at the bottom, so I definately avoid placing it on carpet, but now I've taken to raising it off hard surfaces by placing a few coins under each corner, that way I figure air can circulate around it. It's all theory of course.

I talked to Sony rep who was handling my PS2 "No Fee Offer" repair, and he said the new slim PS2 consoles have overheating issues. They now suggest to play no more than three hours at a time. Stop me from buying a new PS2.

My PS2 is being sent in for repair because GT4 killed it. I had the no fee repair done just 5 months ago, and need to send it in again.

Bad design then. Guess I'll be "fixing" that one myself...

If I'm reading the post correctly, you said every other PS2 game works with it. It sounds to me like its a dirty lense. The PS2's (old and new) seem to be very picky with dual layer discs and dirty lenses.

GT4 is actually not that demanding at all from what i can tell, my console is getting worse all the time (used to play GTASA fine but now you can run into things before they appear) but yet it plays GT4 fine.

In fact out of all the games i have it runs the best 💡

I've had my "new slim" PS2 sence last week in December, And I have had it on ever sence. It isnt the hours of use, its the hours of you abusing the systems. Clean the dust from the vents and they are not cup holders. I swear PS2s are indistructable. I have had my other PS2 for 2years and I abused that with constant use for close to 2 whole years. It is just a bad mother board or lens that cause them to fail... Not that any game destroyed the consol.

With socom 2 I had it logged on the net for days at a time and weeks of straight use... GT4 I let it race all night while I sleep and when I am up and playing it still is great.

i had that same problem but i have an older ps2 its making me so mad
oh well just going to have to play my xbox till i get the ps2 fixed

I HAD THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPEN TO ME WITH GT3

BUT I FIXED IT..

My Ps worked for for every game BUT the GT3, I couldnt figure it out, soone after I bought NFS 1, and it didnt work, "Disk Read Error" but the other games I owned worked, aswell as rented games.

then a few time the rented ones wouldnt work, and eventually nothing played at all. My warrenty expired, and I didnt take the extended nonsence (thank God)

I poped out the plastic and rubber covers and opened her up, by removing the 8 scews

and once open the tiny screws that hold on the cover (right over the cd tray) once open the lazer is exposed (DO NOT TOUCH IT) get some glases cleaner and lintfree cloth (I'll post a pic of what I use) and clean the lazer gently. put her back together and PRESTO she works again.

IMPORTANT when opening her the lid is attachet by a flat wire set up where the power button is. Open it by placing it on a table looking a the front flip the back end (the cover only) from the back over the front.

Now every game works perfectly, BUT I had the prob come back after about a year and a half, I cleaned her up again, and she has worked fine since (about 7 months now)

Here are a pic of the screw locations, and the cleaning stuff.

Hope this helps. :sly:

Depending on how long you play it does say that you should give the PStwo breaks after a certain amount of time. But i'm just saying that because I don't let it rest.

There was SSoooooooo much dust in her the first time I had to clean the WHOLE thing, the vents need regular cleaning, andf if a prob arrive use this method to fix and you should be fine untill PS3

I bought a brand new PS2 on the day GT4 came out and aside from 1 or 2 days Ive had it on ever since! So far I havent had a problem with it (fingers crossed) but 2 of my buddys have had to return thier Slim PS2s because of overheating. I dont have a fan on mine but I did stick a CD case underneath it to try and keep the bottom from getting to hot. Its stupid but its worked for me so far.

God rest my old PS2 on which my new one sits. :( :( :(

I think part of the problem here is owners not keeping them clean. Keeping the dust off the vents helps, but dust is an insulator. And keeping the dust off the vents does nothing to keep the heatsink inside the machine clean. And blowing the vents out with canned air is likely to just kill the fan unless you're damn careful. Which means that the solution may be to disassemble the PS2 on a monthly or bi-monthly basis to clean it out.

Dude check the how 2 the first time i OPENED HER AND CLEANED HER SHE DIDNT NEED IT AGAIN FOR A YEAR AND A HALF

check the how to it will tell you what you need to do to fix the prob.

Edit:Sory about the caps hit it instead of shift

the fact that it didn't "need" it for a year and a half does't mean that it wasn't running hot. It just means that it wasn't running hot enough to cause issues. It is also going to depend on how dusty the environment the PS2 is in is.

A PS2 that's left on 24/7 and sitting on carpet will collect a significant more amount of dust than you think it will after a month or two. Especially the new ones with low profile heatsinks.

Opening your PS2 to repair it is one of the dumbest things you can do. Sony will repair them for free if you send them in, provided your seal isn't broken from trying to fix it yourself. They'll actually replace the entire cd tray and lens, free of charge.

R U Kidding me? IF your PS 2 is UNDER WARENTY THEY will fix it for free, but Sony ONLY PROVIDES ONE YEAR WARENTY PROVIDING YOU MAILLED IN YOUR WARRENTY FORM(after a year you would of had to of purchased an EXTENDED warenty, witch is usually 2 years added to the first year so 3 years in total). If your out side the warenty Sony USED to charge 175$can (in us it was 125$) for any repair what-so-ever. BUT when the release of the Slim modle came out they reverted their prices to 125$can and 80$us. BUT it would be more worth it to fork out the extra 25-40 bucks to get the slim model online ready brand new.

BUT IN ANYCASE IF YOUR OUT SIDE YOUR WARENTY, IT DONT MATTER IF YOU BREAK THE SEAL, THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY TO FIX IT SEAL OR NO SEAL.

This is a step to use outside the warrenty and before forking out cash to get them to fix it.

BELEVE ME IT WORKS!!!!!!

And if you think they will fix it just because you send it to them with a perfect seal, you should maybe be told that WARENTY's dont last forever, ON ANY PRODUCT UNLESS IT SAYS LIFE-TIME WARRENTY(even then ristrictions aply), AND BELEVE ME, THE PLaystation DOESNT come with a Life-time warenty.

I have a 5 year old PS2... damn thing needs cleaning often cause the laser is slowly fading away, but it's 5 years old. Clean it yourself. Sony can't be your backup plan forever. Tomorrow PSP comes out, support for the PS2 will be shaddowed no doubt and your system could take forever to get repaired....
