its not surpising,..consider..GT4 is "Suppose" to use the PS2 max potentialls..and USe the limits of the PS2....so ..if a PS2 can't handle it, its not surprising...that PS2 breraking down in 2 weeks...i have an old PS2 4 years ago..works fine..and didn't break down once througout the year.s.even with GT4 now...proves how reliable old sustems are..not like the thin PS2..which is a waste of money....and more capable of overheating..and no hardrive placement...old PS2 has a cooler...and bigger and lots of hols for heat to expand and more faster cool down...and a HDD capable..for me now...since PS3 is soon to come out later next year..somewhere late 2006 or begining of 2007.....i might as well use the max potentiall on my old PS2..and use my money on the PS3..then put more money on the Thin PS2....

Opening your PS2 to repair it is one of the dumbest things you can do.

Only if you're a computer illiterate fool that wouldn't know a RAM slot from an AGP slot given a map, directions, and a tour guide. The PS2 is a highly proprietary, highly specialized computer. It's still a computer. And if you can build a computer, you can disassemble a PS2 to clean off the heatsink without screwing anything up.

R U Kidding me? IF your PS 2 is UNDER WARENTY THEY will fix it for free, but Sony ONLY PROVIDES ONE YEAR WARENTY PROVIDING YOU MAILLED IN YOUR WARRENTY FORM(after a year you would of had to of purchased an EXTENDED warenty, witch is usually 2 years added to the first year so 3 years in total). If your out side the warenty Sony USED to charge 175$can (in us it was 125$) for any repair what-so-ever. BUT when the release of the Slim modle came out they reverted their prices to 125$can and 80$us. BUT it would be more worth it to fork out the extra 25-40 bucks to get the slim model online ready brand new.

BUT IN ANYCASE IF YOUR OUT SIDE YOUR WARENTY, IT DONT MATTER IF YOU BREAK THE SEAL, THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY TO FIX IT SEAL OR NO SEAL.

This is a step to use outside the warrenty and before forking out cash to get them to fix it.

BELEVE ME IT WORKS!!!!!!

And if you think they will fix it just because you send it to them with a perfect seal, you should maybe be told that WARENTY's dont last forever, ON ANY PRODUCT UNLESS IT SAYS LIFE-TIME WARRENTY(even then ristrictions aply), AND BELEVE ME, THE PLaystation DOESNT come with a Life-time warenty.
Nope had mine sevised FREE OF CHARGE when NFSU didnt work, brand new disc (3 days old) All I had to do was call up SCEA and explain to them what was wrong and try to fix it over teh phone, and we couldn't so he gave me a sevice number and told me to write a letter explaining the problem and send both the PS2 and the letter to San Deidgo, all I had to do was pay shipping, has worked fine ever since. Also you don't have to open her up to clean the laser lens, go to Best Buy and get a lase rlens cleaner they're like 5 bucks.

I never heard of ps2s "dying", but Im sure many know about the "disc read error"
that has plagued MANY ps2 owners, including myself.

I dont know why sony makes such low performance ps2s, oh wait... maybe they want you to buy a new one. Hell, even I did, becuz my ps2 lens died, and I was tired of opening it up to clean the lens, hundred of times and that was only sometimes when it worked.
Stories of these common problems are countless, and I think if you pay $150 for a ps2, (I paid $300 when it first came out) it should be worth the money without worrying if it will just stop working some day (I do). I never seen such a problematic system as bad as the ps2. I know there are errors with the GC and XBOX, but I bet its most common with ps2s

I hope sony's deceitful little "force you to buy another ps2" strategy wont happen when the ps3 comes out, and if they do, sony will be ......$$$$$rich$$$$$$

Only drawback to having Sony fix it is the amount of time it takes. It's not a big deal to me, but for people that spend as much time on their PS2 as I do on a computer, it could be. I'm the same way about computer parts... if I have a motherboard die on me I'll just go buy a new one and RMA the old one whenever I get around to it. The inconvenience of having to use another system for a few weeks isn't worth saving $150 for.

Three days was the quickest return time, with six being the most. You can't wait that long?

Much better than ASUS or ABIT are with their RMAs...

At any rate, for the PS2, yes, I could. For one of my computers... depends on which one. If the mobo in the desktops I use the most bit the dust... no, I couldn't wait 3-6 days. I'd be on the way to Fry's the same day the board died, or the next day if it died after Fry's closed. If the mobo in the dual P3 died tho... yeah, I could wait a week. Or two. Or three. Or whatever. But if someone spends as much time on the PS2 as I do in front of the computer... I can see how 3 days could be too long.

My 5 year old PS2 wouldn't play GT4, it plays everything else including all GTA's. I exchanged the game etc etc, no change. I opened the outer casing and everything was mint, not a spec of dust.

However, i did not open the drive up to check the lens because i use a lens cleaner disc regularly, is it still possible that the lens is dirty? The lens cleaner disc i use has little brushes on it, do these work or am i a dummy? :dopey:

Thanks to all for the helpfull info. I just thought it important to let all know mine was getting hot on a COOL flat service with a clean inviroment too. I have been building computers and gaming for over 20 years so I do know how to treat any electronics but it is an issue to be thinking about for future referance if there is a problem. Well drive hard guys and enjoy the best racin sim out. Keep the rubber on the road.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Opening your PS2 to repair it is one of the dumbest things you can do. Sony will repair them for free if you send them in, provided your seal isn't broken from trying to fix it yourself. They'll actually replace the entire cd tray and lens, free of charge.

I have four PS2s - three PS2s and one PSTwo. The PSTwo played the NTSC/J version of GT4 for two months with no ill-effects at all.

The three PS2s consist of my original (and most used), and two I bought off eBay for just over £30 each. They both had DREs. I opened both, fixed both inside 20 minutes (and used dissection apparatus to remove the seal without breaking it - I'm a molecular biologist) and now use one as a dedicated X-Port machine or to keep HER happy playing Jak 3 and the other as a backup just in case, with a potential (network adapter needed :() for a home LAN. In both cases, the lens was clean and worked just fine - no replacement of any parts was necessary.

Wasn't THAT dumb.

AL80 - There's a little white cog at the back of the PS2 when it's open and the top of the disc tray is removed. Place a mark on it so you know the original position. Turn it 1/8th clockwise. Then plug it in and drop GT4 in it - while it's still open (so be careful not to look into the lens). If it works, try other silver and blue-bottom discs, and if they all work, seal it up. If they don't, turn the wheel another 1/8th and try again. If it gets all the way round, you're screwed... :D

I'm fairly local to you, so feel free to drop me a PM if you get any trouble.

What "dissection apparatus" did you use exactly? My father is a zoologist so we've got all sorts of dissecting needles and tiny tweezers and whatnot sitting in the garage... and I've been dying to take apart my PS2, but haven't reached the warranty-voiding level of desperation just yet

Fine forceps, mounted needle, scalpel and tripod lens.

Works for all kinds of "Warranty Void if Removed" stickers :D

Wait...so how many hours do you play per day?

meh, hours shouln't matter, my Japanese PS2 that i bought in 2000 has been running Enthusia for FOUR days now, no turning off, because i have a "modchip issue" which makes it very hard for me to boot the games, and i need to spend countless hours trying to boot any game in that (i also own a brand new PS Two for the US version of GT4, but i haven't done any endurance tests on it, i own GT4 in both the JDM release and the USA one.)

So anyway, wierd issue. The FIRST PS Two i bought died within 40 minutes of taking it of the box by watching a best motoring DVD. So that went back to the store and i got a new one (which works just fine.) so i guess they don't make the new ones like they used to, Japanese PS2 has gone numerous endurance tests and has passed with flying colors, (ran nurburgring 24 hrs by leaving it on at night, then the two Lemans 24 hrs endurances by doing the same)

I should point out that the FIRST batch of PS2's made in japan were made of better materials for sure, because the USA PS2's (the old big ones) always had laser issues, and DIRT issues, the Japanese PS2 back then had a filter to prevent dust from comming from the fan holes, the american one did not, but for the new pstwo that should be a non issue since the fan is running at such low speed and isn't directly sucking air from outside.

i found 2 old pieces of wood (Not sure about the dimensions, I think its 3 x 1.2cm) that I sit my PS2 on to stop it Overheating too much. That, and I always keep the window in my room open and keep it in a wide open space. No negative side effects for me yet!

Hi to all. I had a brand new PSTwo, worked fine with all other GT series even GT4, BUT after 2 weeks of GT4 it will no longer play GT4. Went to Gamestation in Southend where I got GT4 and they exchanged it, but at the same time I had them check that the new one worked on their system, it did, then my old one, it did too, but still took the new copy of GT4 home........YEP you geussed it it did not work on mine!!!!!!!!! Every other PS2 title I have did but just not GT4, conclusion, naf PSTwo......back to Gamestation and they exchanged it, now all is fine but I will not use autosave just in case and I turn it off every 3 to 4 hours for a break to let it cool, but I fear GT4 is stressing the poor little boxes and getting them HOT under the collar. By the way my memory card was not corrupted at all, just the PSTwo itself died for GT4. ANyone got a clue as to why it would not play only GT4, is the game doing something it should not to the little boxes, is this an attack by aliens ????????????? I just hope my new one is ok and will run a small fan behind it for safety.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ouch! That's gotta hurt. And sony are going to be out of pocket if this is common. Hope it doesn't happen to mine, but are you suggesting it is a cooling problem with slim ps2s?

I've been running my PStwo 24/7 since I got it. I've had no overheating problems , disc read problems or anything. You don't need to "let it cool". Just because it does not have a fan does not mean its going to overheat. Trust me, this thing would have to be sitting on high pile carpet or be covered by something to overheat. Truely I have found my PStwo runs very cool, as cool as my PS2 did.

In what way did your PStwo die? I'm betting that it stopped reading disks. Like I said, the optical drive is the weak link in the PS2/PStwo. You probably just got a faulty PStwo from the begining. These do atleast have a 1 year warrenty on them. GT4 did nothing to cause a problem perse, it just revealed a problem. I think GTA San Andreas which is another DVD-9 disc was blamed for similar types of things.

i have a 4 year old ps2 and it's been up and running since the day gt4 came out.. haven't turned it off..runs fine, no problems..

Its a problem with the cheap lasers sony uses. They will eventualy just die inexplicably.

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA

I just got off the phone with sony, & your right there is a "DRE" ishue, BUT they check the SCPH # and you can send it in. (because there are PS2 that have the known ishue) THAT IS A DEFECT ISHUE, & THEY WILL ONLY FIX THAT ISHUE.

BUT IF IT IS A ISHUE WITH DUST OR DIRT anything other then the Defect witch they have the means to check, they will clean it at your expence (AND THEY ARE VERY CLEAR ABOUT THIS). It also takes 8-10 days NOT INCLUDING THE TIME IN SHIPPING

& that is for a DEFECT, not a DIRTY PS2 that worked fine untill it was used for a week straight and left on a carpet while doing so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT:Ohh yeah a dirty PS2 WILL give you a DRE also.hahahahahaha

My PS2 had DUST in it and cleaning it solved the problem WHY THE HELL WOULD I SEND IT TO SONY TO CLEAN WHEN I WONT HAVE A PS2 FOR A HALF MONTH, WHEN I CAN DO IT IN 5 MINUTS??????????????????????????

AND I CAN CAP WHEN I WANT TO, WHO THE HELL CARES WHAT YOU THINK.

What is up with sony and all there console **** ups. The DRE on teh orginal Ps2 the overheat issue with the PStwo, the square button sticking on the Japanese PSP's. I have yet to see proof that the PStwo overheats. I bet you can make it overheat if you want to, but yo ucan do that with almost any electronic device. The square button on the PSP was not a wide spread issue. I've talked to people who imported them and they say the square button feels the same as the other buttons, and they have had no issues with it.

I care what he thinks. Solid Lifters is a well respected memeber of this community, and I do agree with him that you using all capital letters in your posts are annoying.

So what you need to do right now is relax, and calm yourself down. Post and type in a clean and coherent manner.

Otherwise, Famines friendly hint #1, will become a reality quicker than you think.
