Anything electronic can have components fail without warning. Nature of the equipment. All it takes is a slightly higher strength electronic signal to go through a component & *zap* it's gone. It doesn't matter how many times a device is tested, if it is going to fail, it will do. Nothing that you can do about it (keeping it clean will stop other issues arising that can cause premature component failure). If it goes within the warranty period, all well & good, but if it is out of warranty, the price on the consoles is rock bottom now, that replacing isn't going to be a major job like it was getting the console originally.

My ps2 wont play some of my games. It stopped playing gt4 recently as well. Brand new out of the box it wouldnt load. I clean the lens all the time with scratch free cloth thingers and some alcohol. I did this again when my new gt4 wouldnt boot and it worked allthough still had to boot it like 4 times to get it to actually run the game. Now however it wont play gt4 anymore like I said, and i keep my ps2 perfectly clean and dont do anything stupid to it. I think my lens mechanism is seriously messed up somehow. When my ps2 loads it clicks and when it is first booting it often makes a very loud clicking/smacking sound. Im allmost positive this is the friggin lens slamming into the discs because it did this with socom 2 for a long time as well as gt4 and there are hundreds of little scratches in a circle all around in a circle where the lens would smack the disc. Anybody have any ideas about troubleshooting this? Ive adjusted the lens height/angle a billion times, that doesnt work either.

my friend bought me a new PS2 since he broke my PS2, but instead he got me the small PS2 and ahhhhh i don't like it! and then i went to trade it in because i don't like it and it won't read action replay's memory card so i took it in, and got a refurbrished PS2 and it's a 3000series...and well when i first got it and start playing GT4 for a couple of days it's ****ing up now, i have to take the disc out who knows how many times and then it would load up but when i play in simulation mode the freakin game takes forever to load. like the little clocker timer like thing, it spins forever and in arcade mode when i play with my lil brothers it takes forever to load up too, and the game lags, and is this normal for you guys/girls the screen sometimes shake on some track(s)? i'm thinking about taking the big PS2 back in and "EXCHANGE" it for a "NEW SMALL PS2" i don't want a freakin used or refurbrished one and i was wondering, should i get the warrenty? i think they give you a 3 month warranty?

ive learned my lesson to NEVER EVER get a refurbished PS2
my opinion get a new one, full stop. if you can get the non slim version, thats what i advice but ask around first and see what people say

My PSTwoSlim is on top of two dvd's. And under the "construction" is a DVD-player. That should keep it cool. And for the 24h races I have a cool-gel bag. 💡

My PSTwo has racked up 23 hours of playtime since last Friday running strong. It does get warm but once it reaches a certain temp it stays at that level no matter how long. P.S. It reached almost 90 degrees outside this weekend here in FL. My room was about in the 75 to 77 degree during all gameplay with my computer on to just so you can know.

man, i got my PS2 back when they were only a few months old. mine has no problem playing GT4

you just have to remember to clean it out every so often, and if you got it on your floor, a little more often.

i usually just use a vacuum to suck out the front vent so it doesn't get clogged.

i've left mine going for a few days.

preventative maintenence is the way to go.

This is absolutely, 100% correct. The clicks ARE the lens smacking into the disc.

I can only suggest a few things - try it mounted the other way (flat if you have it vertical, vertical if you have it flat). The only other suggestion is to tough it out - mine started doing it and stopped three weeks later.

starting to hear noises............. :nervous: paranoia kicking in!

Ah crap ! Mines making the smacking sound too , won't load the disc , gets stuck at the "Sony Comp. Entertainment Presents....." screen.
Lens is clean ....console is a 30002 series. Might be time to hunt down a NOS large body PS2 me thinks..... :grumpy:

Occasionally mine would boot up and get stuck at that screen too spinner. Usually, when the game is going to boot, as soon as you start/reset the ps2, allmost immediately i'll hear two fairly loud 'smacks' coming from the ps2. Then, some smoother laser eye sounds and then it will fade into the game. Otherwise I often hear a single smack or even the double smack, followed by what sounds like the disc eye clicking 4 or so times while the disc sounds like it is spinning to a halt. Then it goes into some other laser eye sounds/clicking patterns which leads to the disc read error.

---- Thanks for the advice famine but i have tried the ps2 on its side and flat. I would suggest keeping the ps2 flat for those who still have a working one. The clacking noise is much louder when its standing upright. Anyone know anything about adjusting the voltage and if that would have a chance of affecting this situation?

Also, if this loud clack noise is happening to you. I would recommend looking at the discs you play when you hear that noise. Look and see if you see any little scratches about an inch away from the center of the disc. If your having to repeatedly restart the ps2 like say more than 5 times to get a game to boot and its making that clacking noise and your seeing small marks on the disc... I would suggest finding some sort of solution to the problem instead of restarting over and over to eventually get the game to boot. I did this with socom 2 and it eventually got to the point where the disc was completely unreadable because the laser eye had put so many scratches on it. Im thinking about buying a new laser eye thinger to try and fix the prob instead of a new ps2.

After trying all of the remedies in this thread (thanks to all who posted) , I still had no luck. I exchanged the disc and , voila! all is well!! :) It plays fine on my old console.(30002)

I had placed the disc in the tray 3 weeks ago and had not removed it until the freeze problems started , so it was in perfect condition , well .......appeared to be anyway.

So , it appears there are some faulty discs out there. I am at a loss to explain what happened to it.....? It's almost as if the disc has degraded in some way over the 3 weeks I have had it. Either that or my console had damaged the disc somehow , although it seemed to be scratch free.

I'm off to catch up on some driving now. Its been 4 days of no GT 4 , I've got some catching up to do !
Fingers crossed , nothing else bad happens in the near future.

Glad to hear yours is sorted, i've given up with mine, again, tried all remedies on this thread, but i guess the time comes when it all gets a bit too much for yuor PS2. :guilty:

i left my windows open and put ice packs under and on top of the ps2. since i live in spain it is about 27 degrees in my room and more than 30 outside

My PS2 is 5 years old and no problem with overheating, I read on the net that the First series of PS2 on 2000 got an overheating plate insulator to prevent overheating and to maintain the electronic components at the same temp. of good working condition, also the cleaning method of the page 1 of this sections is very helpful, my PS2 had trouble reading the blue games and other music cd's and when i clean it up the lens it worked 100% back again and no issues, so if you don't want to hurt your PS2 or don't want to worry about overheating be wise and keep it on a good ventilated area or just put a PC fan over it or a desk fan near the vents and your PS2 will be lower in temp than normal use and prolong the life of it and no worries....I did this and I'm in Puerto Rico which the Temp is about 90 F to 92 F ,so people be wise and create your own way to maintain it cool....

P.D. If you thing your PS2 got killed by GT4 it is your console that is very bad and needs to be repair or replaced.....

i got an old PS2 and it say's on for day's on end, think the longest it was on was 3 weeks...
but it's not uncommon for mine to stay on a week at a time.
really only ever got the ps2 for 2 games, GT series and MGS series.. and as most you would know there both long long games.

my PS2 started packing in again after i cleaned it the other month. looks like im gonna be giving it a liberal clean and trying to get these 2 screws in ALL the way so it can sit horizontal rather tahn having half an inch of excess screw

Hi guys,

I don't know if anyone mentioned this on this forum yet but pstwo are known to have burnouts on random pstwos. This has been a problem for us ps2 modders (me) ever since the pstwo was release and also on the old ps2 starting with version 9 to version 11 ps2s.

There are fixes to prevent your pstwo's laser from burning out which is as simple as a couple of resistors soldered to the tracking and focusing caps. The fix was created by a guy named summ0ne over at the ps2-scene.

Who's fault is it? Sony's. They have poor manufacturing quality. These pstwos burnout without anything having been done to them. I had a friend who was watching an original dvd movie and his laser burnt up and he saw smoke coming out of the pstwo.

GT4 did not kill your pstwo. Sony's poor manufacturing did.

Yep, GT4, I honestly dont like it, NOT CAUSE IT WONT WORK ON MY FAVORITE LEVEL (deep forest), but simply because it is not exciting like GT3. My ps2 now makes funky noise's as well, and I was devoted to turning it off every three hours. But honestly, GT3, is fun, where GT4 is to stiff. Also, I have noticed that it is incredible hard to get your car to do what you want now. Such as flicking the rear of your car out in a corner to start a drift is near impossible in gt4. Regardless of tuning knowledge. After 52% complete, and my ps2 becoming faulty, I really do feel let down with this game.

Hmmm, I did spend some time searching and found nobody mentioning this, which is kind of odd since this is so obvious...

I'm talking about the two fan speeds of the original PS2. At least in my version of it (about 2 and a half years old), there originally was only one fan speed. But when I later bought the network adapter I noticed it caused the fan speed to double or something (at least based on the noise of it, it went from noisy to double noisy). I does not do that always however, only with games that use the network card. With some games the fan goes to overdrive right from the start, with others only after you acces the net with it.

Except with GT4 the fan works top speed the whole time, which is interesting because there should be no need for the adapter. What I would like to know is does the game do that with consoles that don't have the adapter? I know I could test this by remowing the thing, but after reading all these posts about overheating problems and such I take the if-it works-don't-fix-it-approach and leave it where it is. So if anyone with an original PS2 without the adapter could tell me if the fan works differentely with this game than others?

It's just interesting that a game that sometimes causes overheating and was supposed to but don't have network play seems to be aware of the presence of the network card and uses some functionality of it for extra cooling (I'm assuming here that consoles without the card don't get double speed). So looks to me the network play was an integral part of the GT4 desing...?

I've heard of someone leaving there PS2 on for a week cuz they didn't have a memory card and finally got one soon cuz they didn't wanna lose their data on a game. Something i wouldn't do.

My 4 month old slim PS2 died. Is on its way back via retailer to Sony for repair or replacement.
My son was playing GTA San Andreas when it stopped. There is no red LED showing when it has power.

Means I have to play GT2 on the PS1 for the next 3-4 weeks.
