GT4 not that realistic.....

hmmm, what if....
in the future, your eyes rely on video input from the pupils, so theres a video in and out jack in the back of your neck, and human reflexes are so fast now that crashes are non-existant. so people play games around tracks to see how fast they can go without any reguard for personal safety (that is if it was during our time).

then it would be a game, and it would be real, and it uses VIDEO!!

If you want realism, take your real car to a track & see what you can do!
Otherwise, stop talking about how unrealistic GT4 the GAME is & keep your negative comments to your self!

99.9% of everyone else on this thread is aware of the subtle flaws of the game and/or are fully aware of the lap times being no where near reality but still don't care about it that much to make a big deal about it considering how much GT4 shines well above all previous versions of the game!

for the last time, it's NOT just a "game" it's a simulator, and the tiltle of the game CLEARLY states this.
 
This is quite the interesting question. Almost rhetorical as well. I've been searching on the meaning of the True Simulation in regard to a Military Simulation, as to what makes a reproduction of en event a real simulation.

As someone's already answered the question on this thread, i will only repeat what was said already... the only way to attain a true simulation is to take the one mediating factor which distinguish reality with simulation. In most cases, the answer is 'death'. So to attain the perfect simulation in racing, it would be to remove the 'death' element. Without the "side effect" of dying, one is able to attain real simulation.

Unfortunatly, in the case of racing, this mediating factor also greatly affects the performance of the drive, in a 'positive' way. Mostly shown by the lap times which are far better then in real life. Of course, taking into account the program, the platform running the program and the peripherics to control the car, its easy to question the level of realism involved, but to the best of circonstances, sitting in one's living room is far from 'simulating' a car's performance.

Ultimatly, Gran Turismo 4 looks to be a good depiction of what a good car simulation is, at best of its capabilities. On Console platforms, with the next generation coming in a few years, more elements of realism will come in play, but until the player is highly sanctioned for his/her mistakes on the track, it will be impossible to attain a real simulation, and thus, we'll never see 'realistic' track times and realistic car modifications.
 
come on guys its a $100 game (aussie dollars) at that price it is a game. even a simulator can't be realistic, ive been in a P-3 Orion simulator down at the air force base, that is the most amazing simulator ive ever been in. 60 million dollars, the guy in there with me said it handled (flew) completely differently and couldn't emulate weather effects well at all, all it did was get pilots familiar with the controls and the basic principles of flying

I know you cant compare the two but GT4 will never be a true simulator, the PS2 doesn't have the power.

On a similar note, I think that once damage is introduced (hopefully in GT5), you'll see a significant increase in lap-times, when drivers are suddenly unable to go careening around the track without a care.

well, i actually STRONGLY doubt that times are influenced by the "fear of dying" fact is, there are a lot of drivers that are crazy and drive the car to it's limits with no real fear holding them back at all...

however, damage will defenetly help.. take a ramp at high speeds in GT4 and once the car lands nothing happens to it, this is unrealistic... a real car can only take so much punishment (rally cars can take a LOT.). a lot of cars would be damaged after a big jump and wouldn't be able to continue, in GT4 you don't have this limitation which defenetly hurts laptimes.

it's a pretty acurate simulation, and i bet that in tracks with out fast long corners it would be pretty close to the real thing as far as the feeling goes, but of course only on cars that aren't too powerful. (such as formula cars)
 
Are you guys forgeting that theres over 700 cars.
If there was just 50 or even 150 i would say then that the realism in
the game is poor , but as i said theres over 700.
So this is still the best Sim in my Books. 👍

Everyone knows this. Even the author of the thread. But since it IS supposed to be a simulation of real life, why not compare the two? duh.
 
No racing game will be perfect. A game is only as perfect as people say it is. I played countless games and demo games, and neither is perfect or seriously realistic. I've played the Gran Turismo series, a demo of Burnout 3, a demo of Forza Motorsport, a demo of RallySport Challenge 2, TOCA Race Driver 2... you name it, I've probably played it. Since I'm not a real-life driver or racer, how can I say that physics are the best? Only real racing experience outside of video and arcade games is maybe doing some indoor karting at Houston Indoor KartZone here in Houston close to Ferrari of Houston. I don't know what's real and what only wishes it were.

I think time and time again, we've challenged the primary slogan from GT1 which is "The Real Driving Simulator." Even our own CobraGT had a thread about what it would be like if GT4 was super-realistic. And all games had their features. "Le Mans 24 Hours" featured car and driver physics for when at high speeds. "Ferrari F355 Challenge" featured compelling physics from this Sega game which is unlike Super GT/SCUD Race and the Daytona USA series.

What am I trying to say here? No game is going to be perfectly realistic. If you think this way about GT4, I can probably say that for about 25,000 other racing/driving games. Case closed. I'm done. Carry on.
 
The closest that a video game can get to realism is if someone makes a game totally dedicated to one car and then take that car in real life hook it up to a ****load of computers and test it, use the computers to analyse the data and work from there.
You would have to dedicate one game to one car to get the most realism

50 bucks? try millions and millions of dollars in development, it's not a "50 buck" game when you sell millions of copies, so you're damn right people's expectations should be high, this is probably one of the most expensive games ever made, so keep that in mind before you make a stupid comment.

I'm pretty sure he meant to us, the consumer....Think of how much it would cost to get a Ferrari 355 challenge cabinet in our home, or something even close to GT4 for anywhere near the price of a console game
 
To be honest, Roxxor, I remember playing "Ferrari F355 Challenge" at a mall here in Houston (before it became a T-Mobile store now). The arcade unit had about three screens. I thought the paddle-shifting was going to be pretty easy, but apparently not. Plus, it was pretty loud.

But you're right. Unless you have a lot of space to have fun with gaming, especially for a huge racing arcade unit, then I'd throw out the notion of a bigtime arcade unit. RoxxorJoorSoxxo, would you say, then, that Gran Turismo 4 is about the best you can get, even if you can't afford a full arcade cabinet?

Or, in like 10 years, I'm sure it would be possible that they set up some seat that would randomly shake when you jump hills, spin out on sand, or crash into a wall. It won't shake violently or anything, just enough for you to distract your vision off the tv for a short period of time.
Also, motion blur would be awesome, but I have never been in a car going 120+mph, so I wouldn't know. Opinions?

There is no motion blurr if you go really fast.

I drove a Maserati Cambiocorsa Coupe last week and got it up to 280km/h(175mph) and everything was looking just fine.....mighty fast, but fine.

sorry but... if you have a PS2 you can play F355 challenge. JUST like in the arcade (same physics). sure you'd be missing two screens.. but it would be exactly the same game.


oh and by the way... my setup KILLS the F355 challenge arcade O_o. so there you go.
 
Why can't you just stop saying: On that track and that car record is only X.XX.XXX and in game you do Y.YY.YYY lap times? Strange thing I have noticed is that those complainers are quite new in here. There weren't those guys in 10/2004 for example. What I want is those guys to do is buy the game and enjoy it. I can't get it until it appears to Finland as PAL release, you have game and you just complain. :mad: :mad:

How can you say lap times couldn't be realistic? There is so many things but in same conditions it could be possible. One thing you have all forgotten is driver's skills. For example Michael Schumacher can do about 1 sec better lap times than Rubens Barrichello in 5km track. Both are good drivers. Back to BMW time, how good has this driver been? I guess that Michael Schumacher (or Mika Häkkinen or Ayrton Senna) could drive much faster lap time! Think of that. 💡

I would like to have good information here in GTP. This Forums quality has gone down since there has came all those complainers. Old members don't usually complain. I want pictures, sound samples, videos that work, driving experiences etc. not complaining of those little stupid DETAILS. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

sorry, but back in 1997 a lot of PC gamers allready called GT arcade (it was) fact is it's not untill GT4 that the physics are good enough for the game to live up to it's sim tag, and the fact that they want to improve on that just goes to show that this is important to them, in fact probably the most important thing. KY has expressed in some interviews that his biggest satisfaction in GT4 is the driving experience (this is directly linked with realistic physics). so there.
 
I think Gran Turismo is an driving simulator game on the Playstation. No more, no less.

I have GT4. And I can honestly say that this is BY FAR the most enjoyable game release for me EVER. I haven't been online in neither HL2 : DM or CS : Source since I got it. And this even though there's a HUGE bug in my game, causing most of the text to be in chinese ;)

I propose a new setting for the GT4 Forum - If you DO NOT have GT4, complaining will result in instant and permanent bannanination..
 
Almost 4 weeks has past with the game for me and all I can say is (again) - this is the best GT game so far.

It has lots of technical flaws, lots of details I'd like to be better, but in total it is the best your money can buy. Not to mention the investments I have put into this particular game-series in last three years - the total amount of money now seems luntaical even to me - but when you put everything on paper, this is the best you can get for a price tag of a 15 year old Fiesta.

Try running any car with N3 (street, AKA simulation) tyres on Nordschleife, turn all aids off and then you'll get a picture about simulation aspects of the game. Tyre performance has been improved in terms of durability, as well as in handling in compare to GT3 - you will not get optimal performance untill "green" period, and whellspin, skidding and sliding will be your best friend for a long period of time. It has been there in same way in previous games, but this is the best so far.

Even racing cars with racing tyres has the same problems - just take a M3 GTR on a Nurb ride with aides off - and I'm talking a DFP usage here - it will become a very nice test of your skills. Time comparing is not a good way to observe the "simulation" apect of the game - I'd rathere talk about the actual "speed" of the game.

Damage will do nothing for the "driving simulation" - I can drive a pretty fast laps without making a single mistake on almost every track, and some of my friends are real "surgeons" for some tracks - but the major problem is the speed of the game.

The F355 Challenge will remain my benchmark for the simulation just because of the way it shows and performs the "speed of the car in the game". First GT was fast as hell, but in that days it was the best simulation for all of us. GT4 is three times slower, but still it is too fast.

If the "speed on the screen" reduces more, and cornering becomes a little bit slower, then the simulation aspect will become more obvious. Add a little bit suspension factor in terms of reacting on bumps and track altitudes, and GT will become a much better simulation. I expect that to happen very soon, PS3 will offer a vast imperovemnt of calculational power, and amazing amount of performance data that was collected by PD in last years will be used by 100% margin.

I don't mean any offense, but nobody is forcing you to read these threads...... I just can't understand why all these guys look in the thread like "GT4 still not released!?" and complain about how they don't like other members complaining.
 
A few things about the GT4-Nurburgring and laptimes. The physics in GT4 look very realistic, but they lack the fact that you can't roll over, also cars jump only slightly and you can take the curbs very fast and violently without getting out of control. Hitting the curbs couses some instability but still you can take them in GT4 with a racecar much faster than in real life. This could explain the faster times. I don't know if anyone has played R-Racing (NAMCO) but in R-Racing you can even roll over if you take a curb to hard. On one occasion, The Fiat 500 I was driving ended up driving on two wheels over a little distance! Looked cool in the replay. If GT4 would have had this (rolloverphysics) , the Sauber-Mercedes would have taken a few corners much more careful and slower. The same thing with the jumps at Flugplatz and Pflantzgarten. Steffan Bellof tried taking Pflantzgarten a bit faster than he had done before and his Porsche 956 got airborn and flipped over... So if you would do the GT4lap with the Sauber, not touching any curbs and backing off at the "jumps" using tires with less grip than those in that run you would easely lose some 30 seconds a lap wich brings us much closer to the real record.

And trust me, I don't... I could care less about people complaining, I HAVE GT4, it rocks - but when I pop my head in the GT4 forum, 90% of the posts are complains - from people who don't have GT4.. And that's ridicilous. The game is AWESOME, I know because I have it. How can you justify complaining about something you don't have any real world experience with ?....
