GT5 AI superbad ?

I don't know about Shift 1, but the AI in Shift 2 are really pretty good (they could still do with an extra hard mode, but the lines and techniques they use to try to pass you or to defend their position are far more realistic than either GT5 or FM4

I agree with your ideas about setting up races in Arcade mode. Now that sounds like a proper simulator, not a levelling game pretending to be an arcade racer.

I haven't put that much time into Shift 2 to make a final comment, but the approach seems interesting.

One thing that struck me especially with GT is that PD is very concerned about not hurting people's feelings. It's been a year since we had an "expert" seasonal and PD didn't dare to put up another one of the same making. Let alone call it "expert". I'm a bit old school in that respect it's okay video games to be challenging. I also like the way AI works in B spec and I think that's a good way to introduce some kind of variety.

Personally I can live with the workarounds to get decent racing out of Arcade, but I'd hoped there's a better way for the enthusiasts. But that seems to be the downside of consumer feedback ;)

Just because network issues keep you from connecting easily doesn't take away from the fact that once you get in to online racing it is an infinitely more rewarding experience than playing against AI. This is not only true in sim racing games, but in shooters, sports games and any other kind of competitive game. We're deep in to the online era of gaming already. Just look at the online racing section of this forum. It's hopping! There are obviously enough people who get a stable enough connection on a regular basis to be able to enjoy racing online.

I've been racing competitively online with GT5 since early in the Prologue days, and had I only ever had AI to race against I would never have put in a fraction of the time I have. Racing real people, especially like minded sim racers, is thrilling, unpredictable and adrenaline pumping, and you don't have to take a silly winner-take-all attitude like you do in a single player campaign. It's a lot closer to real racing and it's highly addictive. I've never enjoyed a third place finish against AI (and I bet most of us don't finish races where we'd finish 3rd against AI, how cool is that? :rolleyes: ), but if I drive well and come thrid to the highly talented drivers I compete against on a regular basis, then I'm thrilled and very satisfied.

Maybe if there were some kind of matchmaking system online so I can race real people anytime I want, when it's convenient for me, I would agree.

Otherwise, I'd rather just race AI anytime I want than having to spend time trying to find organized races that don't interfere with work and other more important activities and responsibilities, and that, unfortunately, will stop going on at some point, and I'll be stuck finding people to race again. I know what it's like.

I used to be a serious Mario Kart Wii player in 2008. And while I did have friends to race and joined organized competitions, I spent the majority of online racing going against random people and it was really easy to find people in that game thanks to matchmaking. And heck yeah, it was way more fun than racing Mario Kart's either too easy or too cheap AI, but the game still made it really easy to get into an online race. Mario Kart Wii may not be as serious as GT5, but they still share the same concept.

And unfortunately, GT5 does not have matchmaking. If I want to simply race a certain car to see how it will do online, I often struggle to find a good room for it. I really miss GT5P's online system.
 
Went back to try out gt3 again with my phat ps2 after my phat ps3 got ylod... The ai in arcade mode under hard difficulty was quite good.

I noted a couple of key stuff:

-In gt3 the opponents in hard mode were using cars of very similar spec to my car. (I was using a JGTC supra, with opponents using other JGTC cars, a V8 ford supercar and a DTM Opel.)
While in gt5 when hard difficulty is selected they just seem to give cars of higher spec (e.g when I use a m3 they give me vettes, lambos and ferraris as opponents), perhaps to make up for the ai's evident lack of pace.

-Gt5 uses a rolling start style, with a linear format of simply catching the leader far out in front.
In gt3 there is the grid start, so there's more proper and fair racing.

-Gt5 ai simply feels a bit slow and dim witted at times, often brake checking you before corners. In gt3 you can really feel the hard ai pushing hard through the corners, and that they really know their braking points.

Anyways I dont exactly fully recall how gt5 arcade ai goes, cos I mostly go to gt5 for online racing, so much more fun. Just hope that PD would add more search options for finding better online lobbies.

In the Arcade racing I've done in GT5, the opponent cars didn't seem to change with the difficulty, just the way they drove. The selection only changed based on my car's stats, and always used cars much faster than mine(assuming equal drivers).

On intermediate they all drove like a bunch of drunken monkeys so I didn't bother checking how they drove on easy, but I did load a race or two and I'm pretty sure the cars were still the same.
 
No matter how hard you ram the AI, they don't come off their line, unless you shove them off the track completely :).

Also I've noticed the AI seem to instantly think they can drive through walls :p, normally on the Rome circuit 650pp seasonal, when I catch the McLaren F1 GTR Race Car at the last chicane or first hairpin I force it into the wall and the driver goes crazy. (Zonda LM driver laughs because the McLaren gets trolled and loses position :))
