mr_seriousI don't know about Shift 1, but the AI in Shift 2 are really pretty good (they could still do with an extra hard mode, but the lines and techniques they use to try to pass you or to defend their position are far more realistic than either GT5 or FM4
I agree with your ideas about setting up races in Arcade mode. Now that sounds like a proper simulator, not a levelling game pretending to be an arcade racer.
I haven't put that much time into Shift 2 to make a final comment, but the approach seems interesting.
One thing that struck me especially with GT is that PD is very concerned about not hurting people's feelings. It's been a year since we had an "expert" seasonal and PD didn't dare to put up another one of the same making. Let alone call it "expert". I'm a bit old school in that respect it's okay video games to be challenging. I also like the way AI works in B spec and I think that's a good way to introduce some kind of variety.
Personally I can live with the workarounds to get decent racing out of Arcade, but I'd hoped there's a better way for the enthusiasts. But that seems to be the downside of consumer feedback
