GT5 crappy DOF in replay

well it depends on where you are...and what you are watching...

NTSC standard was/is 60hz while PAL was 50hz....so 100hz makes sense for PAL territories...

The problem comes with NTSC really...our standard for the refresh rate is 60hz...this is fine for TV shows, because most are shot at 30fps (equal factor of 60)...but a problem arrises from actual movies...which are shot at 24fps (does not divide evenly into 60)....in PAL territories 24 is REALLY close to a factor of 50, so they could SLIGHTLY speed up the movie to avoid any issues...but in NTSC territories we had to use 3:2 pulldown which displays certain frames longer than others on the screen and can introduce judder...enter the 120hz TV...which allows all sorts of frame rates to be displayed properly...24, 30, and 60 which satisfies all of the NTSC broadcast formats and standards...240 obviously does the same...

Interesting! Thanks! I'm wracking my brains now, but I can't think of another refresh rate between 120 and 240 that would also do the "job", as it were. I'm sure there must be :odd:
But yeah, that explains why they're multiples of 120 Hz, then...

EDIT: I'm a 'tard! Each eye needs the full 120 Hz, which is the convenient multiple of 24, 30, 60 - so 120 Hz 3D will still have judder issues for movies? (each eye only "gets" 60 Hz) And what about 50 Hz?

Also, if I buy a 240 Hz telly and I find out that it interpolates from 60 Hz to 120 Hz and then doubles up the frames, I'll kick it in the nuts...

EDIT: But... 240 Hz 2D picture is pointless... I'm having a dumb day :dunce:

*snip* the PS3 is simply not powerful enough *snip*

maybe the PS4/Xbox720 will have enough power for something like that...but its hard to say...

Yeah, I was thinking that in my head as I wrote it :O

I just read that Kaz said GT5 doesnt look as good as he had hoped. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=274146

I think this points out that the game will not run in full hd and wonder how many of you agree with why I think so:
I noticed that on the back of the case of prologue and GT5 it says the game runs in 1080p. On this website: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241 they have a list with games of wich they have measured the resolution. For prologue it says:

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue = 1080p mode is 1280x1080 (2xAA) in-game while the garage/pit/showrooms are 1920x1080 with no AA. 720p mode is 1280x720 (4xAA)

Notice that only some screens are full hd and that the actual game isn't. Also notice that you can still say the game runs in 1080p but, and this is what they arent telling us, only with 1280 vertical lines instead of 1900.
Then add to that what you guys have unveiled in this thread about blurring and prologue being covered in big jaggies.

I wonder if anyone here is drawing thesame conclusion. GT5 will not run in full hd making it painfully clear that the PS3 isnt capable of delivering full hd games. If Kaz cant do it then who else do we have?

That does look pretty bad, but it seems like the kind of thing you really need to be looking at to really notice. Of course now that I saw this thread im going to be looking for this every time I watch a replay now. Thanks man... :sly:

Same DoF effect in Bad Company 2 when you aim your gun, in PC version thought the edges are blurred to, so I think it's because of the limitations of the PS3.

The reason it looks like that is they're using a trick that some games have done since the PS2, you make a blurred copy of the whole screen, and blend it in depending on the z depth of each pixel. This is why the parts in focus have sharp edges against anything overlapping them.

Kazunori has never said that. It is obvious that the hardware sets a limit of what you can do with a game. Read this article to understand the source of those (wrong) headlines.

This effect is very common when you Triangle Zoom, in replay mode, if you dont zoom it does not happen\as bad. This was even in GT4.

Wow that looks horrible. Is that from the demo is it? Because the demo had sooo many bugs and glitches.

I'm glad I stated my worries in this forum and I'm also happy that you've replied. I didnt think of the humbleness that Japanese people supposedly master and it comforts me to think that might be true here.
But, I did see a lot of official gt prologue screenshots that were much more detailed then the game I bought at the time. Also Sony advertised with that you need to have a full hd tv to get the max from the ps3. Till now there have only been 4 crappy full hd games that hardly deserve to be mentioned as such.
The info I ensambled in my previous post also make it very plausible that people who expect GT5 to be full hd will be tricked again.
I guess I'll have to wait till I have the game myself to find out because the people who get the chance to ask him seem to be not caring.
Or I might be in luck and someone will post some more interesting information on the topic here. Thank you for your respons and the good read.

I noticed something strange in the last mimaximax video around 2:57.
When one of the cars passes quite close in front of the camera there is a very crappy depth of field effect going on.

Why do they blur the car but not the edges ?
It looks weird, as if theres a paper cutout of a car passing by, hope they make it somewhat better in the final version. Otherwise, great vids. Keep 'm coming :)

:o I shan't be buying this game.

In all seriousness. This is a screenshot of a moving image. It doesn't bother as much when you see it in action (moving).
Besides you could look at it as a f/2.8 aperture.

It's a feature!

That's actually pretty funny, like a person walking in front of your movie!

But I never watch replays, so it's all good :)
