GT5 damage modeling.

as far as death/injury to body, i can se many instances of death/crushed legs at certain corners in New York and Seattle........

as i had said in my last post, death of the driver is in GPL (Grand Prix Legends) but thats also old 1960s F1 cars when the roll bar was below your neck almost.......shouldnt have to worry about that.....and for the 300mph bit, no car does that stock in the game, so why bother thinking about that.....they should but into the damage model somthing to do with tyres blowing out........that would
1) stop the 300+ mph cars by over stressing the tyres
2) make the Mulsanne very interesting
3) make wheel/wheel contact with the F1 cars a big no-no :D

im just really happy there will be any damage at all.....

The bottom line is more realism can be a good thing in certain area's. In many peoples opinion, car damage is one of thoes area's, the driver dieing is not car damage, that's human damage, which wouldn't be an area that would improve the game. And people who say, yeah but how realistic is it to walk away from a 200kph crash, it's a damn sight mor realistic that iit currently is. Some people obviousely don't like the idea of damamge, some do, it's an opinionated thing. If your opinions clash neither of you are right or wrong. At the end of the day, Kaz has said damage will play a large part in GT5, how this turns out is yet to be seen, but our debate here won't affect that.
Well said -- Kaz has the final say on this matter regardless of what we say 👍

I just realized something...

Sheetmetal bends and dents. Glass breaks. So does Carbon fibre. Wood ('31 Chevy, anyone?) splinters. everything has a different way of taking damage.

so, will a Toyota GT-ONE break or dent when hit?

Carbon fibre can bend (to a degree) and break, it's possible to differentiate between body materials in current PS2 and PC games, so it shouldn't be a problem for PS3 games. A GT-One will dent though only slightly and/or crack depending on the impact.

Half way threw the ring on the first lap, your engine goes boom....

SWEET!
And then come the videos of children killing PS2s...

Uncle, take a look at GTR. That implicates some of the greatest realism ever. Oh but see, it doesn't have you "die" when you crash. It just puts you out of the race and that's it.

And that's as far as it needs to go with any racing game.
I guarantee you, if your idea was in, and you ended up "dieing" causing you start all over, you'd be thinking "What the hell was I smoking when I thought this was a good idea?"

Damage in GT??

Risky business as this is new to the GT series,

Hope it turns out OK...

...and makes you wonder about other new features in relation to it.

eg, body repairs, engine repairs, replacement parts, etc...

Can't wait to try it out...

that would be pretty cool and have it to when your tires get too hot they blow and you wreck and guess what you lose....

The car? The race? Your license? ;)

lol, well, maybe not that last one, but that isn't a bad idea...

When people play 'unfairly' by either using the ai cars as brakes or just usung them to steer around corners or just cutting corners plain and simple, to be recorded how many times they do these things and if they do it too much, to lose their current licence...

A little off topic, i know, and people will say its unfair, but they shouldn't have been cheating in the first place...

GTRacer4
But it wouldn't be up to 'next gen' standards.
there is no "standard" of DM in car racing for the next-gen of consoles

much of the details people have mentioned are not needed

if they cover damadge modeling like GTR has , it would be fine . as long as they attempt it in a realistic manner - with better AI drivers & parity between the player & AI then there wont be a problem

As far as damage goes the only thing I would hope for is that they don't allow you to crash into a wall at 200 MPH and still keep on running like so many other games with "realistic damage modeling" do. Maybe GT5 should have two difficulty lvls for the simulation and online play.

As long as there's a RETRY option on every race which you can get to from the pause screen, I won't mind. Having to go through the ordeal of an entire race that I've given up on isn't high on my list. Oh, and scalable damage too. For a game that even little kids can play, I'd think that selectable damage is a no brainer. I would like the option of saving a totalled car though, that just seems like the height of hilarity to me.

If damage does appear this GT, I do hope it's more like GTR and Toca than Forza, although I hope the repair bill is more like it is in Forza and Sega GT2000, more of an annoyance. Forza with damage on isn't that bad, even though the bots often race like it's a demolition derby for no apparent reason. I've become quite familiar with the RETRY option. :P

Let's just all let PD decide about it on this one. They make it, you will buy it still, because it's such a good game. GT5 will be another BIG STEP for PD. Just like GT-GT4, they've made such BIG improvements and sacrifice some things to make the game from go from good to great.

Look at GT4, it took forever for it to be on the "Greatest Hits". They've probably learned something from that.

When Kaz and PD talk about realistic damage they may consult manufacturers actual crash testing to model it accurately. Whether this is viable for the huge amount of manufacturers that are likely to be in the game it may be quite a challenge, however we, polyphony and the gaming world are kind of expecting a driving game revolution with GT5!

They have to find a medium between something that is realistic but yet not so annoying or difficult that you give up, basically damage that looks great and influences the racing but yet wont mean you blow up with the first bump into the wall. To appeal to the general marketing audience im sure they will choose to tone down ultra realism when it comes to damage.

This doesn’t mean that the damage cant be appealing eye candy, I really do want to see panels scrape, crumple glass crack and mechanics break off etc… but the car should still run or at least limp back to the pits or something (unless a major 200mph kind of accident). To get an idea of how each car smashes there’s nothing better than getting hold of the manufactures data or simulations.

amazing pictures Robin, thats really how the damage should appear in GT5! :D

yeah, if its to much damage you'll have to quit the race as in real life :D

I think the gt 5 will come with the same kind of wear and tear as the gt4 came.!BUT! i hope gt 6 will come with realtime damage modeling and such.

Um..... GT4 didnt have any damage..... did you mean another title?.... Im sure GT5 will have a very high level of damage modelling as KY talked about...Im hoping for something near the level of those MG Rover pics I posted..... fingers crossed :)

actually i was talking about the engine wear.

And probably tires as well.

But if the car will be damaged to that extent in GT5 as shown in the MG picture, then how would one continue the race? Fix the car (early in the game when there are insufficient funds)? etc...

Just so people know... those images shown with damage are calculated "offline" in everything other then real time... ther eis no way that kind of detail can be calculated in real time these days. FEA (and many others i wont go into) calculations on complex CAD models is very processor intensive (i'm heavily into CAD so very familar with this kind of thing).

drive carefully or start the game all over again ;)

or.. PD can add a possibility to borrow money from a ''bank'' or something, and online from other racers :D

But some people can't be bothered to drive carefully. Some people just can't learn. I was one of them until I finally found a way to master the techniques.

damage will make driving on The Ring reaaaal interesting....though i've gotten much better at that track, there's always a corner i seem to forget, or take a little too fast...and bam i'm spinning, saving the car, and then usually followed by a wall and a violent screen shaking. Damage will probably never have looked so good...

This is what I mean. There are tracks where you just can't master, notably Nurburgring, and if damage can even disable a car then majority of us won't be able to finish the races.
