GT5 Engine Sounds !?!

I am wondering if i am missing something here, but all the engine sounds in GT5 seem a tad muted, in my opinion. I have checked all the settings on my Sony Bravia and nothing improves them. I purchased the Mazda 787b today and although sounds good, it is nothing like the GT5 video's of it on youtube. Am i missing something here in the set up of sounds in GT5? Any thoughts/advice much appreciated.

Sound changes depending on the view you choose for the car. In car sound is different from the roof cam and bird's eye view (behind the car) captures the sound as it exits the exhaust, the best sound of all, but IMO, the worst view for racing. I use roof cam most of the time and a lot of cars just sound like crap, more like transmission whine than a real engine. Perhaps this is how the cars really sound in real life and it's "accurate" but I'd rather have fun and exciting sound than "accurate" if that is the case.

For great sound try the BMW M5 (maybe the best big block sound in the game), the Alfa Competizione (sp?), the Spykyer C8 Laviolette (what a V8 should sound like), the Isuzu Concept car from the dealer (4.2 litre V8 if I remember correctly that actually sounds like one, the Maserati Gran Turismo S, and a few others. Luckily these cars are also fast in their PP ranges and you can compete well with them and enjoy their sound at the same time.

While on the subject of sound, ever notice that when you are racing in close quarters online, the sound of your own vehicle is seriously muted? Just when you need to hear it the most for gear changes, sometimes it's almost silent!!

I don't think all GT5's sounds are accurate, but what I do know is that they've got the 787B's sound sooo close to the real thing.

I like most of them. Im also very happy that standard cars got nice sounds as well. RUF BTR and Nissan 180SX Type X. You even heare the GRRRRR popping in those :D.

Some cars seem to have muted sounds in all views (opponents cars sound louder than your own) but in general I find them OK. You need to turn the volume down when driving the 787B mind to not upset the neigbours 👍

Get the "Window Weight Reduction." You'll be able to hear outside noise clearer.

Yeah it amazing the difference in the Cockpit view once you have done window weight reduction + weight reduction stages and removed all the sound deadening. I couldn't believe details like this had been added.
I guess that's what he meant when he ( KY) said " There is no one great feature about Gran Turismo 5, it's a culminaton of all the small things that add up to the experience you get whilst driving in the GT5 world."

If you want to hear noise, just supercharge or turbocharge something (RMing works too). You get this rediculously loud rasp on 3rd person and a high-pitched scream anywhere else. Makes any car sound like a beast. Also really surprising if you have the volume high for the menus (OWWWW) :dunce:

i really like the sound when the premium cars are all stock but once you start adding exhaust, turbo, transmission.. it just gets more and more high pitched.. i dont think it sounds like the real thing anymore

I had the same problem.
Go to Options back in the main menu and look for audio stuff..
Theres a bar there that's put on "Living Room" under it are options like Small Theater etc. Just try everything until you here your engine on every view. Sorry for not specifying where to go but that information is all you need to make your engine Roar.

If this has been posted sorry. I did not read all the Replies

Well WTF. Might as well as Specify everything out.
Options >> Hardware >> Audio >> Dynamic Range >> Small Theater

That's my Option. Works for me!

I tried that...and it does give a fuller sound than with the "living room" option. One thing that does make a big difference in the sound of the car is the racing transmission. It's the source of the high pitched whine in a lot of cars. Take it off and all cars sound better and more close to realistic. Unfortunately, then you can't tune your gearing...which sucks. Too bad we don't have the option to "turn off" transmission whine.

I've done a LOT of forum searching, much of it away from GT planet and a the results are not good, it is the one thing i am terribly disappointed with in this game. Engine sounds are a major thing, just ask Bernie Ecclestone who is refusing grand prix cars to go to 1.6 turbo's which would make them flat, I bought the Mazda 787b cos A, i wanted it and B, for the sound, or lack of it. If you play Forz* as I do, did, the notes are amazing. But, it is what it is i suppose.

Well, Bernie can refuse what he likes... it's Ferrari who hold the cards on that one :D

Personally I think the sound is better than Forza on many cars (and I'm a HUGE Forza fan!!!). That said... I did spend about half an hour faffing with settings...

Don't know because I have done weight reduction on every car I own...lol.

haha

Anyway does weight reduction really increase the noise? I'd never noticed. Awesome.

This below will answer that question.

But remember that not all cars have cockpit views. So even by doing the weight reduction in all manners you'll still have to go with the "behind car" view. Plus you'll get the exhaust right in your face.

Overall, engine sounds in GT5 are good... some sound extremely accurate (hear your Cizeta V16T and then look for it in Youtube, almost the same ), some sound very acurate (the 787B sounds very good but I think the engine sound of GT3's version was closer to the original :)) and some just sound... like electric shavers (look for the GT-One and the Sauber Merc for the worst engine sounds in the game... 👎:grumpy:)

I disagree, I was really disappointed in the 787b, it sounds nowhere near as raw as the real car.

I agree.. look up vids of the 787 on youtube and that thing just SCREAMS.. sounds like a vacuum cleaner in GT.

GT5 has some of the worst audio in recent history in my opinion.

@ Mr Mow, the sounds are the biggest single let down in this game bar none. A real shame.

I agree 100%.

I've been researching GTRs and found some good in-car video on YouTube. The R32 in-car sounds in the game are terrible and generic. The real thing is awesome and once you hear it, you really wish PD would have paid more attention.

If engine sounds aren't important, we might as well be driving electric cars.

the one thing that really annoys me is the fact there's nothing gritty about the noise, if you've ever heard something with a full racing exhaust system you'll know what i mean (racing cars not imprezas that some greasy **** welded a dustbin to the back of). they rattle and bang, snap cackle and pop, when you blip the throttle. in gt5 when you blip the throttle you get the lick of flame, but not the awesome noise. here's a good video for anyone who has never experienced the noise of a racer.

To all that are saying they are disappointed with the engine sounds... You do know that they are the real engine sounds? They record it with microphones. They have been doing it since at least gt4.

You do know it sounds like crap right? They dont sound anything like a real car. It has been talked about soooo many times.

Bottom line = GT5 sounds are terrible.

Exactly. the sounds we get is something from a pimped out a weedeater.

GT3's sounds are far supierior! Every car in that game was different from one another, and the 787B was able to be heard from a mile away! Should have just kept old sound files and reused them, would solve some sound problems.

Pyramids on mars have been talked about sooo many times as well. That doesn't make it true.

The sounds are brilliant as usual. You wont hear the full benefit unless you have a top end budget surround sound system with at least optical sound. I have a mid range yamaha surround sound bundle with a sony amp with optical, but even that doesn't do the sound full justice.

Someone already said before that you need to watch out for what view you are using. That's correct. When in a car when a rear engine car and in the cockpit, yet will be hearing the engine and exhaust and gearbox all from your small rear surround speakers. You could fiddle with the speaker set up and make the rear speakers louder, but even at that, you have so much continuous sound data going through an ultimately "lossy" system.

Think of it as trying to listen to someone whisper in a movie, while in the background there is am explosion, heavy rain and waves crashing against rocks.

And if you're listening to it through normal tv speakers that's worse.

The third person view you will just hear mostly the exhaust. Which at high revs will sound like one continuous whine. You will hardly ever hear people in real life giving their car full bananas. So give in about half revs with a bit of volume on your hopefully at least mid range surround system for a reference.

Lastly, for those that have actually been in or near a sports or racing car being driven in anger, will know that you usually need some sort of ear protection for any prolonged time around the noise. Not recommended, but if you have a decent sound system, turn in up till you feel you need ear plugs then you're talking!

I have a mid-range Onkyo 6.1 receiver my PS3 feeds into from optical. I completely shut off dynamic range control. The engine sounds are still decent at best (with a few exceptional examples admittedly) but more frequently just plain bad. Better than they were in GT4, but what wasn't? And I know it isn't my equipment holding me back, because there are games I've played on my PS3 using the same setup that sound far better than GT5 does.

I'll be frank about this: The only way you can legitimately act as if GT5's engine notes are anything near "brilliant" or "real engine sounds" is if you have no idea what you are talking about. There have been dozens of topics talking about this exact subject, and almost all of them have video evidence showing exactly why you are wrong. There was one just a couple of weeks ago talking about how none of the VTEC Hondas sound anything like they do in real life, with multiple collaborations by people who own some, which was loaded with comparison vids.
