GT5 is better @ 720p

if i tick all boxes my ps3 chooses 1080p and it seems to look better at 1080p. I'm confused.

Leave 1080p unchecked and try at 720p, if it looks no better go back to 1080p.

Btw it means your TV accepts a 1080p input but it cannot show 1080p output

At 720p the TV upscales to 1366x768, at 1080p it downscales to 1366x768, depends on how good your TV's scaler is to which is best!

I bet the people having problems are playing with 50hz tv that can't keep up with gaming images in general.

You need at least 100hz for gaming. 600hz Plasma seems to be optimal.

The output of the PS3 is 50 or 60Hz...running a 100Hz or above TV will make NO difference.

Not really true.

Most people who dont understand TV's would leave their TV set up the way it came from the store with the brightness, sharpness and colour all set way too high giving a overblown mess of a picture to anybody that knows what they are looking at.
Set the TV up properly and at first they may think it doesn't look as good because they are not used to seeing colours being reproduced acurately and real picture detail instead of the scratchy mess that the sharpness control adds to your picture. But over time as they get used to what a picture is supposed to look at they would be unable to go back to their old settings which had at the time "looked better".

Bingo!

Start with turning all enhancements (black tone, dynamic contrast, edge enhancement, 100/200hz etc) off and sharpness to 0, it might take a bit of time to get used to it, but when you go back to your original settings it will look unnatural.

You want your TV to output as close to industry standard as possible, to get maximum performance and detail as the director intended.

Get some test patterns off the web or better still a calibration Blu ray!

As for TV's that aren't 1080p native but allow for that resolution, I tick all boxes and let the game decide. Generally avoid 1080i, most games will default to 720p. Only GT5 have I noticed to look better at 1080p over 720p, otherwise I can't tell any difference that really matters.
 
On my TV, 1080p resolution is better.
In-game resolution (while driving) is 1280x1080, however menu screens are in Full-HD and much more readable and clear than at 720p. Also since most HD screens are not really 720p, but 1366x768 pixels or something similar, you will always have some sort of overscan and interpolation, never a pixel-perfect image.

That doesn't negate my point. I said that if by changing things you notice no difference, then ignore the changes. By doing the above you are making changes.

Hi guys, interesting thread!

I have a question though: what if you set the resolution to 720p, and then in game settings you switch to the "smoother edges setting"?

I would appreciate f someone can try this and reply, since im at work and cant do it myself..

My hypothesis is that the pixels get smooth plus the statement that the game "runs" better with 720p ?

Thanks, most TV's for the past 3-4 years, even my TV is used in that thread accept Full RGB, that doesn't make it a correct setting.
 
I've tried out 720p because of the rumours of the better anti aliasing.. In 720p mode the menus obviously look a lot worse, and I looked at my f430 scud in the white arcade screen hoping that the stripes would be less jaggy thanks to the better AA, but they weren't. In the race itself I didn't really notice much difference but I'm sure side by side with 1080p it would look noticeably worse.
 
I have been playing GT5 on my 13" black and white TV since it came out. I personally feel this is the best quality game play, especially with the 3" mono speaker on the side.
