Has anybody seen the PSP2 that Sony announced today?

Heres a quick run down:

5 inch, OLED touchscreen
2 analog sticks
front and rear cameras
3G data, Wifi AND GPS
2 touch sensitive panels on the back
and
wait for it...

QUAD - CORE ARM CORTEX A9 PROCESSOR
AND
QUAD - CORE GPU
:crazy::dopey::drool:

Sony is saying that this thing is as powerful as the PS3. I saw somewhere they were playing Uncharted on it at the unveiling. And those are just a tiny fraction of what this thing has. Here is Gizmodo's take:
http://gizmodo.com/5744521/sony-ngp-an-oled+equipped-dual-analog-touch+sensitive-portable-powerhouse

So, what say ye GT Planet? GT5 on PSP2?

Well if those pics are to be believed it looks much like an old PSP. I think its about time it needs updating now most smartphones have 1Ghz CPU. Perhaps another portable GT game will be on its way but i sure hope they have a proper A spec mode in it and allow you to buy the cars you want instead of waiting for ever just to find you dont quite have enough money :ouch:

Well, It has dual analog sticks. And it can (sort of) play ps3 games. <- that alone is enough. I dont care how it looks. It looks fine.

I don't have a problem with the looks either. Ive always kinda liked the PSP's appearance but im just thinking more on a marketing level here. We have seen at least 3 variants of the old PSP already and in my opinion there isn't really much significant aesthetic difference so it might be difficult to pursade people (those who dont know about CPU speeds for example) the hardware is significantly better.

Something else which will determine weather the PSP2 will be successful is the price of its games. Given the better quality of games this device will no doubt support they will most probably want to keep it quite high. Now they have the iphone/windows 7/ android under £5 PS2 quality market to compete with they cant afford it to be too high.

I think it would be stupid on Sony's part to make a handheld device that has better graphics than the PS3.

But if it's only a step below, and if that phone thing works, I might just snag it up.

I cant see it being better than the PS3 graphically. The PSP was described as PS2 graphics when it wasnt quite there. If its anything close id be very happy as long as the battery lasted a sensible amount of time and it didn't melt in my hands as soon as i turned it on.

Anyone like to guess a pricepoint? $499 perhaps, no doubt they will find a way to make it even more expensive in Europe like they did with the PS3 💡

I'd say $299 for the American market. Even at that price, it could be a tough sell for Sony.

It is not a phone though.

By the looks of this device, it is what I had in mind. It uses resolution I use on laptops that struggle to play games except the aspect ratio I use is 16:10 which is 960x600. I think the processor and graphics card is 28nm so that is even better news for battery life and how long the PSP2 will last in the future. It also has an OLED display which takes little battery power compared to normal screens and is very bright and has a very high contrast ratio.

The only thing is this means PD ended up wasting a bit of time making a game for the original PSP as now they have a much higher resolution device and memory. The constraints of the original PSP no longer apply for the PSP2.

I can see PD making the GT5 OS, more scalable so we will see the GT5 ported over to the PSP2 with custom physics for the device. With the power of the PSP2, graphically it will look like GT5 on the 5" screen. if not better due to shadows with also the cockpit view. The load times should be less too as the PSP2 should have a lot more memory than the PS3. At least the original PSP GT game helped PD become better programmers and they used many techniques used for the PSP version on GT5. That is why probably they got all the weather effects and better tyre smoke on the PS3.

This should give Sony developers more time, as they won't have to focus on making games device primarily for the Portable Console but make all the games they develop for the main consoles such as the PS3 easily made portable.

Finally this looks like Sony has learnt from its mistake from the PS3. They are making the PSP2 hardware current for the time of release unlike the PS3 which the graphics power was dated when it launched.

Perhaps the PSP2 could run 'remote' a-spec races if it can play blu-rays. It'd make 24hr races a lot easier as you can turn a PSP off in game and it will remember what you were doing last (providing the keep that feature) and do races wherever you want throughout the day.

Yeah I know its not a phone, I should have worded that better.

That PSP2 looks to be a really cool gift though.

It will be awesome. Truly epic....

For about 6 1/2 minutes...

Then you'll need to charge the battery. Seriously I get how powerful the PSP2 will be but I am extrememly worried it will be a moot point having the power of a PS3 in your pocket if it will only run for (and realistically this time) about half an hour...?

It might be a quad core but it's only an ARM processor, think of it as a very powerful iPhone, that still isn't as good as a PS3.

I did some maths on how fast the PSP2 will be graphically and it is bang on as good as the PS3 graphically.

I think each core of the GPU can do 35 million polygons per second. That is in total 140 million polygons per second. The RSX can do 250 million polygons per second.

However the PS3 games most of them have to run at 1280x720. The total pixel count is 921600. The PSP2 is 960x544 which is 522240 total pixel count. The difference I think is 43.3% pixels less.

Here is the thing the difference between the RSX and the PSP2 GPU theoretically is 44% less so it gives in essence the games will look the same on the handheld. I don't know the technical specifications of the PSP2 completely as it may have even more graphics power so it might even itself out. The CPU will also be very fast, and games will not need to make as much compromise as they had in previous handheld titles. The future of portable gaming looks bright. The next iPhone is not comparable as a gaming device as the games are much shorter and the PSP2 will be about 3-4 times more powerful.

I will wait until GT is available before I buy one of these though. Price won't go down until about end of 2012, beginning of 2013 due to manufacturing processes won't get lower until then. Best thing is battery life will go up too then and it will be cheaper.

Although it is fast, it is capable of PS3s graphics, how long the games will be?
I mean, in general, games on the PSP are extremely short compared to PS2 games...

But if Sony puts this power into a handheld, what can we expect from a PS4?!

Anyways, by the time the NGP is released, half of us would've stopped playing GT5. Or at least other games would be higher priority than playing GT5 on the NGP...

The games on the PSP will most likely be ports of PS3 games so it will be as long as them.

The PS4 will be way more powerful than the PS3. Most games will run at 60FPS at 1920x1080 and that is what I guess Sony will be pushing along with 3D.

Nintendo could make a Wii more powerful graphically than the PS3 at the end of this year at a similar price point to the current generation Wii if they wanted to.

Cool, I already have the PSP and bought that in a special packaged deal with GT. I will look forward to this but will wait to see if they offer another package deal.👍

There was an article i read this morning breaking down the pieces of the new psp,it estimated it costs roughly 270$ to make the psp2.And supposedly a sony spokesperson who wanted to remain unidentified stated they price plan was the same as the ps3,sell it at a loss.Which if that proves true would mean it could be close to the 3ds cost(250$)
Also to the poster above me(one of them),it wont play any type of disk in general, its download only

I think that is going to be an issue for sony without umd's.Download only means really really long download times for even a short game, especially if they are ported from the ps3.That's the problem they had with the pspGO,unless they have some creative solution to this i don't foresee the new psp doing well.

games will be on flash cards in shops or downloadable via store

Battery is gonna last 4-5hours

Graphics are slightly below PS3.

THey did run uncharted on it in the presentation, and sources claim it looks nothing short of amazing.

Prize will be "affordable".
I think between 230 - 300 €

I have GT-PSP in UMD format, I certainly hope we can get our UMD collections into digital format so we can play them on the new PSP.

^ No , same as with the go.

I read that a Euro Spokemen of Sony said they would "like" to do not the same as with the ps3. Maybe he meant not that much as the ps3.
The early PS3 they made 150€ loss on each unit.

For the retail versions of game look above

I'm going to guess they won't have a choice but to sell it at a loss,if it truly does cost 270$US to make and they sell it for a profit it is very unlikely they will sell any.PSPGO was a good example of this but i dont think they cared about the pspgo personally,i think that was a test phase for the new psp price wise and for how people would react to no disk's on a gaming platform.I personally believe if they sell it for more than $250US they will be screwing themselves over from the start, their best bet would be to directly compete with the 3ds or go below it...On topic though. If they made it possible to do the "cloud" gaming the MGS4 guy was talking about that would be awesome.Imagine being able to bring B-spec mode with you,or race while doing #2 :O

there is a possibility the price wont be that much in the first place, most people are speculating it will be on par with the 3DS(250$) due to the fact it doesnt use 95% newly developed hardware(ps3's problem at launch) and is estimated to only cost 270$ for sony to make,if they sell at a loss like they did with ps3 it shouldn't be as expensive as people originally thought.

I think the reason they say it's as powerful as the PS3 is, that due to the lower resolution, you don't need such a powerful system.

Nope , games will be sold on a card which will apart from storing the game will store any add-on you download , I think this is great as I´m not a big fan of having the game on digital format only !!
