There are so many threads about all the things PD got wrong in GT5, things we hate about it or want in the game & rightly so, it is indeed a flawed masterpiece. However, what about all the things you like, what did they get right in your opinion? They could be big things or little things or anything that you think PD done well in GT5, time for some positivity people!

Right, here's my 2 cents:

1) I love the ability, in My Lounge/Open Lobby, to turn off the Slow Car Boost & Penalties, great for sim racers like me who want more realism. It's also brilliant that we can turn off/set up all the driver assists so everyone's on a level playing field.

2) It's great to be able to restrict tyre choice & choose a car from the Recommended list, great for making sure everyone's got the same set up for a close race (we need more though;)). The bhp & weight restrictions are great too imo & adds more realism than the old Prologuge PP system, although ideally I'd like be able to choose between the 2 systems.

3) The Nurburg Ring, all variations, it is so epic & I know I'll never get bored driving on it & racing on it, imo it's GT5's crowning glory & goes a long way to balancing out the lesser aspects of the game.

4) Race modding cars, especially the Lotus Elise 111R '04 which is my fav car in the game, then being able to tune it & set it up how I like, endless hours of fun!

5) Experiencing the new weather system & watching it all change dynamically, sometimes it's an utterly breath taking & emotional experience, especially on The Ring 24 hours layout.

6) The online Community in GT Life, seeing all your friends game stats, sending gifts & messaging really makes GT5 a more sociable experience than any other game before it & is a welcome addition.

7) Just going for a drive, using my G25 & Playseat & in one of my fav cars, after all it is called "The Real Driving Simulator", it's not all about racing you know!

What about the rest of you guys, what things did PD get right in your opinion that you like?

:)

Although (or maybe because?) I have been focusing on the negative aspects of the game, there are a couple of things they have done well I'd like to talk about.

One nice touch I find myself spending a lot of time with is the act of buying a car. When choosing the colors, being able to choose different environments to see what it looks like in different lighting is great. Not only that the premium models look breathtakingly realistic, the finish also looks great. The different kinds of lacquers (matte, normal, metallic) look very lifelike. This is something I love to play around with for some time, and I often can't decide for a specific color because so many of them look so good in a specific surrounding.

Can't remember anything else from the top of my head, but I think I had a couple more things I found to be a nice idea.

Last edited:
1) Physics and controls. Can't imagine better.
2) Variety of available experiences (rally, nascars, f-1 cars etc...)
3) Premium cars are awesome in detail. More of that - they are beautiful!
4) Perfect photo-mode.
5) Track detail (bumps)
6) Nice and crisp graphics. (without any speed "enhancers" like FM and NFS)

The only thing I can say they got right is:

1) Detail of premium cars. It never ceases to amaze me how real they look.
2) Physics. Driving is a lot of fun, especially with a wheel.
3) Detail of tracks and day transition/weather.

These are the only things that stand out for me and are probably why I still keep playing.

Physics - They feel a lot better than previous GT's. I'm especially happy about FWD cars being competitive against RWD and 4WD cars. In GT4, FWD cars were understeery and would get beaten by a RWD with half the power. In GT5, you've got cars like the Integra Type R RM and Volvo C30 going around spanking Ferrari's around the track. Lots of fun!

Premium Cars - There's not many of them, but the 200 or so that we have are stunning to look at. So much detail inside and out. I wouldn't be suprised if PD reused these models in GT6 and even 7.

Dynamic weather/time of day - The day to night transitions are really good and the weather changes are well done. It's made endurance racing less boring after you've lapped the same guys 10 times already.

Racing Modifications - Again, there's not many, but the few that we have are great. As well as having exterior changes, the interior changes too. Also those steep prices are actually worth it, considering the racing mod comes with additional downforce, less weight over a non-RM car and it installs a bunch of new parts for you, so you can save some money in the tuning shop.

This thread should be stickied! Anyways:
1. Physics- It's really awesome, easily the best on a console.
2. Cars- I consider them as 200 cars with 800 bonuses. The level of detail on Premiums is astonishing.
3. Graphics- Apart from the shadows, it's just stunning. Driving on the Nordschleife during sunset brought a tear to my eye:tup:
4. All the small touches- Clouds obscuring sunlight, speed of sound modelled from a distance, etc.

I like the weather transition. I am looking forward to the 24 hour events.
I also like the detail in the fans. It's cool when they throw their arms up as you go by them.
The detail to a lot of the cars seems better than previous games too.

1) I like that they massively improved the AI. In GT4, AI cars would fight you tooth and nail for a particular driving line. They give ground much more easily now, when they discover that somebody is already there.

2) In GT4, faster AI cars very routinely ran up the back of slower cars, but they pass much more smoothly now.

3) The physics -- outstanding.

4) Premium cars -- beautiful, even if one of them is a Prius!

5) Replay is very smooth. In Forza, if you're not using a wheel, the replay is choppy, and the car drives in a series of straight lines instead of a curve. The car doesn't take a smooth turn, but GT5 gets this right.

6) The tracks are fantastic.

7) Big improvement over the GT4 tuning screens. Much easier to see what you're doing.

8) Lots of cars on the track at the same time.

9) Weather, day/night racing, high/low beams...all very cool.

The Nordschleife

While the AI is better that GT4 (when opposition didn't even know you existed) it should be a lot better.

Funnily enough, I thought the AI in GT5P was really good so somehow they've taken a step back. Am I the only one that's noticed that? Or maybe it's just the "kicking a cardboard box" collision sounds that make it seem worse.

But yes, driving the Nordschleife is absolute heaven

Premium cars, amazing graphics, except there to little of them

Premium cars are gorgeous. I really appreciate even the tiny details that you don't even see unless you really look for them.

The tracks are great.

The improved tire smoke and the addition of tire marks is great.

I like the previews in the New Car Dealerships. Where you can choose Studio, Day, Dusk, and night. Sometimes I will just oogle at cars in the different light. lol

Although I detest the level system, I do really appreciate that PD made the licences optional. I also like the more applicable skills that the licences in GT5 teach you compared to the "repeat the same skill 7 million in an increasingly more difficult fashion" that previous games taught you.

Lexus LFA
SLS AMG
SLR
787B
430 Scuderia

...

The premium cars. The Nurg, replays, the ability to acutally paint your car(regardless of how dumb the system to do it is, or the inability to paint some cars, it's better than nothing), the physics, and the smoother albeit still dumb AI.

Premium cars which are just stunning.
The whole driving experience.
The graphics, I like how GT5 doesn't have that speed blur thing which is totally unrealistic in my oppinion.
Great tuning.
GT TV
Photo mode and the ability to export photos to PS3.
The overall realism of the game no matter what car you drive (standard or premium).
I like driving any car no matter if it's standard of premium because I don't care about car's craphics (because I use bumper camera).
Community, online has chat, you can see profiles, logs, walls of your friends, you can recieve gifts, it's almost like Facebook for car lovers.
I also love how you can feel every bump in the road (some people do get motion sickness from that).
I can go on and on like this forever, I'm just in love with this game.
I know it's not perfect but aren't we all?

Graphics and physics

oh yes! driving an NSX-R in Nurburgring is fantastic for me...

Thinking of the people who critisize the game reminds of Monty Python - What have the Romans ever done for us.

They would say "Apart from Stunning Premium models, fantastic physics, perfect photo mode, dynamic weather, beautiful graphics, the number of cars, the number of tracks and variety of racing types - What have Polyphony ever done for us !"

What I'll do is put down what I think this game has over other games rather than "what they got right". Physics (sometimes) they did pretty good with.

Premium car's cockpit view I think they really nailed it. I feel I can put my car anywhere from that view and be exactly where I think I am. Which still puzzles me how people can say that the in-car view is not sim. (Aside from F1 2010 of course since you can actually see your tires and know exactly where you're at).

Night and day/ weather transition on tracks that support it. Unfortunately it isn't for every track, very few in fact but at least it's there.

1) That they finally got Ferrari and Lambo on board. Now add Porsche, and I'll be a happy, happy man.

2) Premium cars - Incredible and raised the bar so high. All the complaints you'll hear about only 200 cars... the vast majority of standards look the same level as the Competition. Yeah, it's nonsense we can't change wheels, but trying to keep it positive here. ;) Let's see what F4's models look like...

3) Online racing / restrictions / setup - Great!

4) Photo Mode - A whole sub-game.

5) The Ring

The game can be turned off pretty easily... arm another one.......... erm......... erm......... nothing stands out to be completely honest.

Making my favorites Cars premium -_- Thank God They got that Right -_-
and aslo the Physics and controls are jusy Awesome even with the DS3 -_-

Just curious, do you have an HDTV?

It doesn't matter. That is a false statement regardless of what TV you are hooking your system up to.

They got Nordschliefe right. They got me versus Norschliefe right.

Also, thanks to a very generous GTP member, I had my first drive in a 787B around the nordschleife last night. Wow...

1) The Premium cars looking real

2) The ability to at-least tune standard cars

3) Driving with a steering wheel is more realistic

4) Drifting is amazing :D

Honestly, the things that are great about it are all the things that I buy the game for. Namely, the physics and driving experience. Also, agree on both the ring and online racing. I've been hosting a 500hp street car room at the nordshcleife 4 or more nights a week for 3 or more hours a night for well over a month and it never gets boring. Hell, I was doing that from 9pm until 3:30am just this past sat night. Yeah, A spec is lacking, the leveling is annoying but once you get your B spec drivers built up enough money to buy and build cars is plentiful and if you get with a good group online the game, imho, can be endlessly enjoyable. I'm thinking the G27 and home built rig have a lot to do with that, however, but for me I've been loving this game. The track details, the driving experience, the online racing....all spectacular. All the aspects that people are whining so loudly about are the peripheral, less important parts to me.
