GT5 - Things You Like & That PD Got Right In Your Opinion.

I could list all the things I love and hate about the game (there's a fair few things on both lists!), but at the end of the day there's one massive reason I play GT5 over any other driving game, and in fact, pretty much any other game, and that is simple.

The actual driving. It feels believable (emphasis because I've driven maybe three of the cars in the game in real life so I don't know what the others are like for sure), and I think it's incredible that every car I've driven handles almost exactly as I expected them to, except the X2010 because there's just no frame of reference for that. Oh and maybe the FGT but that's not real, so whatever, but it feels like it doesn't generate enough downforce.

So, even if I hated every other aspect of the game, I'd still play it just for the driving, because at the end of the day, that's what it's there for. It has big let-downs in other areas, and I don't know if I'll be playing it in 5 years' time like I was GT4, but for now it's just immensely satisfying to drive in. Given that I'm a big car nut and videogame geek, combining the two is about the best you can get as far as I'm concerned, and Forza just didn't satisfy my car nut side enough... I mean honestly, no AW11!

I love several things about this game, but one simple thing I like, is the look of race tyres when you just take off and the look of the big dunlop or bridgestone label and you get that little bit of wheel spin before you set off. It just looks so real its unbelievable. Also, the massive fat tyres on the 69 RM camaro!!!!

Thinking of the people who critisize the game reminds of Monty Python - What have the Romans ever done for us.

They would say "Apart from Stunning Premium models, fantastic physics, perfect photo mode, dynamic weather, beautiful graphics, the number of cars, the number of tracks and variety of racing types - What have Polyphony ever done for us !"

👍👍👍 Great post!

1 - I love the Ferrari 330 - one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

2 - Photomode is amazing

3 - Playing this game with the DFGT is completely immersive

4 - Fantastic Physics

Seriously GT5 is about the driving. Unfortunately only the driving as getting to the driving is the most annoying part.

There's a few things I really like about this game. The driving physics, especially with a wheel, are great. The premium cars look fantastic. There's some nice detail in the tracks. I love driving with the DFGT wheel and being able to make adjustments on the fly. I like the practice area in GT Life (I use it for running test tunes and some rally runs). I enjoy the level of tuning that's available for all cars. I also like the animations with oil changes, painting, engine rebuild, etc... I like the weather changes that are available. Last but not least, I like being able to trade cars with others. Trading brings about a nice sense of community. :)

Great thread by the way.

Just curious, do you have an HDTV?

Yup. 60" 1080p.

Apart from the livery, F3's cars look like crap compared to GT5 premiums. A few standards do stink (Honda/Acura DN-X as one example), but many others look comparable to F3 cars minus the livery.

Sorry can't agree with that at all. Like Toronado said above, this is a false statement point blank. Maybe we can get online with both games and go over details and see about this. Your xbox live gamertag same as your PSN name?

The game allows me to drive some awesome cars that I could never afford around some beautiful tracks at insane speeds. It allows me to customize (to a point) all types of cars and enjoy the history of the automobile. It allows me my own fantasy gearhead world I can escape work and all the other bs in this real world of ours for hours at a time, for that I am grateful. Unfortunately, the load times, the grinding and the insane endurance races suck the cool right of the game. I will keep grinding though...

My 2 cents or pence

Physics.
Premium models.
Detail of tracks.
Photo mode.

The rest of the game is rubbish.

👍

I really love the tracks, and I'm getting into Photo Mode as well.

Little things I appreciate:

The way rain moves on a windscreen according to your velocity and direction.

There was one race where it had not long stopped raining and I stopped, then started again, and the water that'd gathered at the bottom of the screen splashed up the glass and then went sideways across the glass leaving trails as I turned the corner.

Never usually use cockpit view, so it was a nice surprise.

Also really like the way they've captured the half light of dawn on the 'ring. Especially after it's been raining, and the way brake lights catch in the spray.

5) Replay is very smooth. In Forza, if you're not using a wheel, the replay is choppy, and the car drives in a series of straight lines instead of a curve. The car doesn't take a smooth turn, but GT5 gets this right.

I'll come back and answer the OP's question later, but I have to say: try using the thumb stick rather than the d-pad when you play Forza.

1. The most important thing--the physics. It's the best physics of any driving game on a console and is in the same league as some of the best PC sims.

2. The Nurburgring. I think it may be the best Nurburgring simulation on any platform.

3. Top Gear Test Track. I love taking car and driving it hard around the track just like in "Top Gear" and yelling "Massive understeer!"...."Chicago...Hammer head...Gambon!"

4. Online lobbies are much better than most games.

5. I think they did a great job of fixing the most common complaints and feature requests from GT5P. Tire marks, damage, smoke, physics, weather, day night cycle, tuning and customizations.

The soundtrack: The menu music has a boutique feel to it, especially when you're in the New car dealerships. When that saxophone gets to blowing, it feels like I'm standing in a Macy's

Paint chips: I know a lot of people are like, "WTH?!?", I must admit, I was too. Now I appreciate the system. It makes the little customization we can do more intimate. I think it was a graceful substitution for wild body kits and such.

Remaining to be Gran Turismo: Even though the game has its major flaws, it kept its personality. Its no doubting its still the GT we know and love(or tolerate). Now, if it could keep its personality and com' on in to the 21st century, we'll be cooking with grease then!

No, sir. Grease.

I don't know about you but I think food dipped in gasoline would be kinda nasty. lol

The only thing i truly don't have a problem with in this game is the Ring.

Ha, I'd say you're right. Although I would argue that you cook in grease, but cook with gas. Anyway, I'm just used to a different expression :)

I like how Gran Turismo is staying somewhat classy. It's something that adults can enjoy, rather than an in-your-face mess of cheesy car body-kits.

The fireflies on the ring at dusk. WOW.

But the one thing PD still seems to "get" more than anything any other sim developer is how to make each car feel so different. They may not simulate any specific motor-sport quite as well some of the more focused sims, but I've never driven anything where the cars are so unique and special. IMHO that's the biggest strength this franchise has.

(Let me add, however (and just in case someone at PD or Sony really does pay attention to these threads), that despite the above praise I'm one of those people who finds that the rest of GT5 to be so utterly and inexcusably flawed that I'm no longer playing it. I bought all the cars I really want, and occasionally put the disc in to drive a car I like, but mostly I've moved on to much better games - like GT4. I sure hope PD fixes some important issues with the next update!)

^ True that. Now all they have to do is include standing starts/Power Lap Board in the next update and we can compare laps to real life!

Agreed. Most of the stuff people list here belong in the cons column IMO.

Things i love....

1: The physics/handling
2: 200 of the 1000 cars
3: Cockpit view is stunning!
4: Nurburgring at night is insanely fun
5: Lighting system

Tried to think of 10, thought best to stay at 5.

Would agree with pretty much all that's been said thus far and one other thing:

The X1/X2010, both the car and the challenges.

For a long time I've been wondering, what if.............there were no limits?

Well, here's a possible answer.

And the challenge itself, well....it's very hard, but I never found it frustrating.

Wheel response and FFB on the DFGT is very good.
Handling physics is good for a console game.
The real life tracks, especially the 'Ring, are great (time transition there to night is done amazingly well).
Weather is good, but tire grip in rain has issues.
Car choice is abundant (maybe TOO abundant!).
Replays look good (not issue-free, but what is?).
Detail in sky helps give a better sense of uphill and downhill than some other games.

The rest? Don't ask...

Funny to see this, because I just finished the Special Events Rally (actually, I had forgotten all about the special events), and I had more fun doing that than almost all the other stuff combined...

I went back to do it again, and saw that the courses randomize themselves each time, so I'm never doing the same thing twice!! It was like my birthday, New Year's Eve and Christmas all at once!
