Ok, we all know TDU2 is free roam galore, so trying not to talk too much about the "just cruise" ability of the game. STRICTLY MY OPINION, AND MINE ONLY.
SOUND
Both games have great sounds, but I'd say they're relatively equal. GT5 doesn't have great sounds, nor TDU2 with it's repeated tone that's only manipulated for each car. If I were to only choose one, I'd say GT5.
PHYSICS
Yes, TDU2 is arcade. Yes, GT5 is a sim. Not exactly what I'm after. In TDU2, random physics can kick in, which can lead to your car randomly flying 45* to the right after landing a jump, and that's not fun. Not only that, but just random 🤬 can happen in general (accidentally flew off the track in my Caterham 260, went to get back on the road at an intersection, and right as I go over the curb, my car flips over...WTF?). Also, regaining control of your car is just a pain in the royal ass. You lose control, have fun gaining control at 150mph without stomping on the brakes.
GRAPHICS
Ok, I have to say, both games are fantastic. A quick look at how the cars look, GT5 easily takes the love: the premium cars look absolutely fantastic (somewhat the same for standards). TDU2, the cars look fine, but not as great (2D rims when moving). Looking much deeper into the environment, and TDU2 just looks great. Environment feels great and active. Continuous day/night cycle, weather (only online sadly), and environment changes (house lights turn on at night, trees move in the breeze, birds flying) just adds to the detail. One thing interesting is that cars with metallic paints show the sparkles in the paint...even GT5 doesn't have that :/.
FEATURES
TDU2 easily. Cruising online, drag racing, being able to be a cop and chase people online, online racing, and off roading are just some features. It's mostly strait racing in GT5 (duh), but you can also drift and drag (on TGTT mostly).
VARIETY
Generally speaking, GT5 takes the cake. MANY cars to choose from. Plenty of classics and newer cars, from daily drivers to high-tech F1 cars, from compact to prototypes, GT5 has just about every type of car you can imagine. TDU2 mostly has cars that would make Jay Leno and Top Gear jealous. Koiengseggeseggeseggesegg, Spyker (about the only game that has these cars?), Pagani, Ferrari (yay!
), Bugatti, RUF (yep, no Porsche still), Alfa Romeo, and many more. Plenty of high performance cars, but not many "just cruise and relax" cars, sadly (besides a Lancia Delta, Mustang 302, and a couple more).
ONLINE
No mute button=annoying, which leads to you having to have your headset on, but sitting on the shelf, having to go to a different part of the island, or turning online interactions off. Also, can't customize online races and make them specific like GT5. GT5 definitely wins here.
ECONOMY (no, not ours)
GT5 wins again. Finish all the championships in TDU2? Have fun attempting to make money! Can't redo championships to get another $2.5 million out of that cup, only measily $3k side missions and repeating the races in the championships.
SUPPORT BY THE DEVS
Sure, we don't have PD posting here like on the TDU2 forums (we wouldn't understand what he says anyways), they are still watching and following us. Release day, we got a good sized patch which added in some features. December, we got even MORE features. As of today, EVEN MORE features! Just shows PD loves us. TDU2? "Thanks for your support, we'll take it into consideration!" is just about all you see on the forums. Also, the devs appeared to be mocking everyone on Twitter over not being able to sell reward cars, saying things like "haha, you have to deal with that pink mustang!" and "too bad". Really shows your care for your customers....
Overall, I say GT5. PD keeps pushing out top notch updates, proving small features that help us in big ways (ex: loaning a friends car, helps you complete a race and check the car out before you trade for it). TDU2's servers were down on day one and were finally fixed 3 days later. I wouldn't stop you from TDU2 though. If you like to just drive, then I highly suggest it. It's your choice on it, I'm not saying it absolutely sucks (personally, I think it needs some
major improvements until it's just right), but just my opinion between the two.
