It's one of the most iconic, or perhaps rather infamous, moments in Formula One. Here's a quick video of what happened.



As for why it happened and what it meant, it's very complicated.

Senna (yellow helmet) and Prost (blue/white helmet) are seen as two of the greatest drivers that Formula One has ever seen. They both had very contrasting styles, with Senna very aggressive and fast, and Prost very intelligent and calculating with his strategy. They were part of the same team for two years, driving some of most dominant F1 cars ever made, and so it's only natural that some tension grew between them. 1988 went rather smoothly with the pair winning 15 out of 16 races and Senna winning the championship, but early in the next year a fierce rivalry erupted through a series of events, and they reached a point where they would not even speak to each other. Prost was so bothered with Senna as a teammate and believed the team was favouring Senna, so he announced he was leaving the team for Ferrari midway through the season.

By the time they reached Japan, Senna needed to win the race to keep the championship alive. Prost knew this and before the race he said that he would not open the door for Senna any more if he got ahead of him. He said this because Senna was a very aggressive driver and would go for gaps that other drivers wouldn't, and Prost would have to concede position to avoid a crash. But for Japan, knowing he'd be world champion if Senna didn't finish or didn't win the race, Prost said he wasn't going to do this anymore.

Senna had pole but was on the dirty side of the grid, and thus Prost got the cleaner start and took the lead. He had an aggressive start to the race and built a lead in the early laps, but as the race went on Senna caught him up. Right on his tail, there was seemingly no place to pass on the entire course. On lap 47 of 53 and time running out, Senna went for it at the only place he saw possible, the chicane.

He dove down the inside and as Prost looked into his mirrors and saw Senna diving down the inside, he closed the door. The cars touched, interlocked, and glided to a stall at the entrance to the chicane, which is the exact moment the picture was taken. It was a very controversial move from both Senna and Prost -- Senna for the risky dive down the inside from far back, and Prost for turning in very early for the corner that he would've gone in the grass and a late block on Senna, causing an unavoidable collision.

Prost, knowing he'd won the championship, got out of his car, but Senna urged the marshals to give him a jump start -- deemed legal as he was in a dangerous position on the track. They did, he rejoined the track from the escape road and remained in the lead, but his wing was broken from the collision. He completed a full lap without a front wing and pitted for a new one. Nannini passed him for the lead while he was doing so. Senna returned to the track, passed Nannini at the exact same location where the incident happened with Prost, performing the exact same maneuver down the inside of him. He took the lead and won the race, keeping his championship hopes alive.

However, after the race there was a long delay. Senna was brought into meet with the stewards and the FIA president, Jean-Marie Balestre. He was, rather trivially, disqualified for cutting the chicane before rejoining the race. Prost had now won the championship, although McLaren would unsuccessfully appeal the decision. Senna was fined for dangerous driving and somewhere along the way lost his racing license in a war of words against Balestre.

The next year in Japan, Senna made amends. This time Prost needed to win to keep his championship hopes alive. Senna, knowing what happened the last year, argued the pole position should be changed to the clean side of the track. The stewards, and Prost, agreed and Senna won pole accordingly, only to have the stewards decision reversed by Balestre, the FIA president. With all this and the previous year in mind, Senna told himself that he was not going to let Prost pass him on the first corner.

The lights went out, Prost got the quicker start again on the clean side of the track. Senna pulled up to the inside of Prost -- Prost opened the door, closed it, and then opened it again as he went for the racing line, and Senna went for it on his inside, moving to a position where if Prost didn't give way, they would crash. They did, they both went off and Senna won the championship this time -- in Senna's words, not a good way to win the championship, but a result of the politics by the FIA and Balestre.

Long story, but the proper background to explain the picture. Most racing fans and particularly F1 fans know the story already, but for anyone else there's a whole lot more to the picture than two cars parked beside each other.

The "dangerous" position is a very stretched idea. It was almost inside the chicane, the slowest bit of the track.

Mind you, I'm a Senna fan.

I can't see the number anywhere on this car but it's certainly the #21 car. I miss the days when numbers were all clearly visible on every F1 car.

The rules said push starts from marshals were illegal with the one exception of being in a dangerous position on the race track -- leaving it open to some interpretation. Senna was at the entrance to the chicane, albeit quite deep in it and off the racing line, but his car was still parked there. If someone had braked late or locked up they could easily hit his car. That alone is enough to warrant the "dangerous position status." They could've wheeled the car away, but the rules never addressed that issue and he was in a dangerous position, making the jump start within the rules.

Anyway, the FIA deemed it legal so it's a moot point. The sole reason Senna was disqualified was for cutting the chicane, which was quite ridiculous itself. During the team's appeal, Ron Dennis showed a clip of a race from earlier in the 1980s in which 3 or 4 cars cut the chicane at Hockenheim and no such penalties were handed out.
