1967 Hino BRE Samurai

  • Total voters
    112
  • Poll closed .
Looks like something out of an 80s anime. I love it and it's so rad but it's not exactly cool. Uncool.

I'm talking about how it's placed on the wall. Everyone's votes are worth -2, -1, 0, 1, or 2 points and the sum is divided by the number of total votes to get an average vote, which determines the car's rank.
Oh. I read it as the individuals of GTPlanet using math and popular opinion to determine their vote.

Maths is deeply Uncool anyway.
Agreed.

Didn't we go over the horsepower deal before?
Apparently not. Yeah, 110 horsepower isn't much. But it weighs under 1200 pounds. But I'm not sure how well in practice compared to the other cars it was supposed to race against.

Race cars are uncool for me, because by classic TG standards the Cool Wall is for road cars. You don't have to agree, but that's how I feel. So for me to say "meh" on this is actually high praise in a way. I'd buy the designer a beer for sure, if I could.

I try to not let whether the vehicle is a production/race/concept/whatever car sway my vote. But that's just me.

Generic 60s race car + rear wing.

I won't vote on it, or to be more exact I'll vote Meh in order to make my vote void.

So, you voted meh in order to make your vote count as meh? A meh vote still counts towards the overall score...

Crazy Japanese racer from the late 60s, developed by Hino in collaboration with Peter Brock, and using advanced aerodynamics to make 220kph with a 110hp engine? And it's called the Samurai?

That's as cool as it gets.

This thing is impossibly awesome, and I didn't know a thing about it, so that makes it double freaking sub zero.

You know the rules. It's a race car and therefore automatically seriously uncool.

What rule is that? Surely that's something Famine and a couple of others always say, but isn't subscribed to by most of us. Hence this car coming up for polling. If you don't think it should be here, don't vote, rather than potentially skewing the poll with a very low rating.

Anyways I'd never heard of this, but having read the blurb almost went for SZ. Have to settle on Cool, as its credentials seem to have never really been tested. Looks good on paper, but could be a total dog.

I get the logic behind the SUBRC. Part of my brain even wants to agree with it.

But when it comes to race cars from the 60s and 70s, I just can't help myself. Engineers who knew just enough about aerodynamics to be dangerous dreaming up all kinds of crazy designs to take advantage of loose rules that couldn't quite keep up with what the emerging technology of the time was making possible. It was a glorious time for auto racing, and oh how I lament the fact that I wasn't around to see it. Sub zero.

What rule is that?
My personal rule when it comes to voting on GTP Cool Wall.
If you don't think it should be here, don't vote, rather than potentially skewing the poll with a very low rating.
Ignoring the fact race cars shouldn't be polled, race cars simply are seriously uncool for multiple reasons, the fact almost all race cars are completely unusable for any other purpose than driving around a race track for instance.

Interesting car, we made some stuff for Hino once at work, I'd guessed it was truck bits but other than that I had no idea who they are, or more importantly, were.

Good looking car, interesting concept, cool.

No.

After looking at it again, I think I made a mistake with my vote. This thing is horrible.

Voted meh. Should have been SU.

Molieg, if it isn't too much to ask, why did you change your mind like that? I fail to see how is this car so "horrible". Its racing history is not good, granted, but the car itself isn't that awful. The design was groundbreaking for its era, and it made advancements in aerodynamics that few cars would do until much later. I would love to hear your explanation.

Just this. Would love to know more about it, to see it, and definitely drive it, but that doesn't change the vote.

It seems that the Hino's rating is pretty much dictated for being a racing car. It's a pity, but I understand that those are the rules.

If you want to know a bit more about this, there are a few articles that can be found online:

Cool. Lightweight and not too powerful, I feel like it handled crazy good on the track.

Too bad it got disqualified for being too low.

Well, when I first time I saw it, I didn't see anything remarkable on it. Very light, yeah, couldn't even have the chance to prove itself on the race track, but that's about it. Not a head turner, but won't hurt your eyes if you look at it either... It was just an old Japanese racer...

Then I saw the pics for a second time... something didn't click for me... looked like a Fiero kit car or something like that (like the awful ones... or pretty much all of them).

Then you made me look at at for a 3rd time... After all it's not that bad... but it's still not something I would marvel at.

So: Meh (like my original vote) :p

There you go. See? It's not as bad as you though, and it really shouldn't be. If you like the Shelby Daytona Coupe, you can see that one would like the Samurai as well. I mean, they share quite a few similarities (in design, that is). No one with a Fiero replica could replicate this, unless that person spent about half a year on creating said replica... As for the car never making it into the track, as I sadi, it was all bad timing. Bad timing with the DQ in the Japanese Grand Prix (because the car had the pace), and bad timing with Hino's death at the hands of Toyota. It's really just that.

Yep, the more I look at it, the more I see the resemblance with the Daytona Coupe. This was a very interesting car, after all. 👍

If only it wasn't a racing car, then the infamous "racecar=SU" wouldn't apply and we could all appreciate this car for what it is instead of having to follow that rule. But I guess I had to expect such a thing to happen, so it's okay. And if you read the additional information bit, you'll realize that the Shelby and the Hino share the same designer, so that's why they look alike. ;)

Yes, I read that part too (and even wasted some time here at the office reading at some info  )
