I run into so many muscle car Normans. God they are a bore to talk to.

"Well I see you've got yerself a '67 C code model prefix DLDO-18. You know those came from the factory with tan washer fluid bladders instead of standard black ones. You should check the tape on the back of the clutch pedal to-"

"You're making me bored of my own car."

Haha, this legitimately made me laugh out hard.

"I drive an AMC."

@Slashfan Example: I drive a Kia Spectra.

Do you really care about any other info?

I too would probably ask what year, but Spectras haven't been around here that long, but if a car model had been around for decades then the year is important. But then again I can be a little anal about some things and I just like knowing the details.

I can understand why you might sometimes add something on to clarify exactly what you're saying.

One might say that they drive an original Beetle or Mini say, to show that they aren't driving one of the new retro throwback versions, or they might state that they drive "an old Golf from the seventies" to show that, but I have never once met anyone who has decided that the correct response to "what car do you drive(?)" involves saying exactly what year it's from. When I'm talking with car people we might say that the car in question is a Mk 4 Fiesta or an R34 Skyline, but whether it's a 2000 R34 or a 2001 R34 is largely irrelevant.

Perhaps its just the difference between the relatively static car model lines in europe and the annually updated American line ups creating a cultural difference?

If I'm talking about my car I might only say the model, for example, "I changed the tires on my CRV"

if someone asks about my car I'll give them the details such as year and trim..." I have a 06 CRV SE.

I don't know, that's just the way I think...if someone asks they might appreciate the coupe extra details that distinguishes from one model to the next.

Anyhow this horse has been beaten into the ground, I still think the AMC is ugly. Peoples criteria differ greatly in ranking a car.

It also depends on the car.

It's easier to use C4, C5 etc on a Corvette than a year. But for other cars it can be better to use year instead of gen.

An easy way to look at this is to think about what you would say to the cute girl who has just asked you "So, what do you drive?" ?

"A 1969 Boss 302" - Which sounds like a load of gibberish, especially to this girl who has no clue about cars whatsoever, who will probably be thinking "And you expect me to know what that is?"

or

"A Mustang" - Which she may or may not recognise as being a car, or a wild horse, but at least you've answered her question. She'll have plenty of time to take in all the little details of your awesome ride when you take her home in it later that night. Because you're cool.

Back on topic, I voted uncool for the same reasons that Famine gave. To me, an AMX is a tank, or a jet, both of which are much cooler than a car (although only to me, because knowing that isn't cool).

Old mustang is too vague in my opinion. An old mustang could be anywhere from 1993 back to 64.

That's kind of the point. If they want to know more about your car they can ask. Randomly telling people information that you assume they're interested when they're not is seriously uncool.

Just telling someone what year it is isn't uncool, I'm just going to agree to disagree on this
