0-60 times are a stupid way to judge a hot hatch anyway. They're not about racing from lights to lights, they're for blasting down a twisty B-road. They have suspension tuned for keeping up momentum around a series of corners and they're light, or were light - the XR2 weighed only 850kgs - 100kgs less than a S2 Elise. As long as they've got enough 'squirt' to link the corners together. Thats where the fun is found from driving hot hatch.

This guy right here gets it. He gets it so much that now I understand why others can't get it. Because he gets all of it.

A nice summary of everything that's awesome about hot hatches and why HP and 0-60 times are just pointless numbers in them.

Just to weigh in to the "Golf GTi Rip-Off" argument, it's not even clear which came first. The Golf went to market before the Fiesta in 1974 but the Fiesta had been unveiled in '73.

Just to weigh in one the "Golf GTi Rip-Off" argument, the Fiesta is supermini and the Golf is small family car. The two cars weren't even in the same class.

I didn't know this car well but looking how it looks, the stats, the form being similar to the golf...the Golf would been Sub Zero. This car? I actually think it's cool. It has some appeal to it.

Seems to happen a lot, don't it?
Frequently, but how big an issue it is depends on whether the manufacturer subsequently offers a car beneath it to fill in the gap.

Or whether the manufacturer then offers that smaller vehicle in your country of choice - if you like small VWs in the States it's a bit of a bummer as the Golf is as small as it gets, but in Europe there are two vehicles below it. Chevy is one of the few companies that actually covers every base in the U.S. - the Sonic (subcompact/B-segment) and Spark (minicar/A-segment) both fill any gaps that were left after the Cavalier grew into the Cobalt and grew into the Cruze.
