I always thought the 308 rally cars, that were not really a factory effort more a 'works' effort by Micheloto, were made to Group 4 regulations. The 288 Evo was built for a defunct Group B race series, or racing class that never happened. The 961 version of the 959 was the only car built to those regs that ever took part in competition.

Some people say it's ugly, or that rear spoiler is just wrong, but we all have to remember what it was built for: Group B Rally, and if that car ever made it into the scene before it ended, I could almost guarantee that car would have been a beast. I really like the look of the car and as the predecessor to the F40 it really served a purpose afterall...

Function over form, after all.

History is always cool, ask Doctor Who. This is what was history being made during it's current frame of time, I doubt Ferrari realize just how much so.

Exactly.. When most people hear rally they almost immediately think dirt or 4WD and stuff, when it's actually time trials and there are racing variants too for Supercars also known as *drumroll* group B! And each Group has their criteria and this one had to meet its own, and for that matter I think it's a pretty good looking car!

Completely and utterly ruined one of the few pretty modern Ferrari's.

I think the point Toro is making was that like the 961, Ferrari had no actual rallying intentions of any sort for the Evoluzione. It was built for Group B in endurance racing like Le Mans '83-'86 that was originally "dominated" by Porsche 930s & BMW M1s that managed to sneak into the class whilst the 961 was classified as a GTX.

Which is a bit of a shame because based on how quickly the 961 turned out, the 288 Evo could have really put Ferrari back on the sports car racing map instead of awaiting the creation of the 333SP.
