Because there's no law in the universe that says entirely unrelated things can't be judged by entirely subjective criteria...
That's what makes these polls so interesting yet irritating at the same time

So to the average person a supercar is incredibly uncool.

... and while the general public were ogling the 458 Spyder and the Gallardo, these supercar and sports car owners were ogling a dinky old BMW from the 70s.

Looks to me like you guys have your logic reversed, it appears that the "average" person is fascinated with new, modern supercars while the true car enthusiast appreciates older, cheaper more historically significant cars.

You missed an important part...
I was at a sports car club shoot...
Try it on a street. No-one will even look at the BMW 2002. Of the 50% of people that do look at the 458 (or similar), 75% will think "tosser" and 25% will be car enthusiasts or children. The other half, who won't look, don't care in the slightest, because most people do not give a crap about cars.

That's cause we're not "average" :sly:

Interesting, I've been with many people who I wouldn't consider "car enthusiasts" and every time I'm on the road and point out an exotic car to them I have never heard a negative comment regarding the car. Regardless of the car in question, their remarks are usually along the lines of "What is that, a Ferrari?" or "That's nice". Maybe things are different where you live, but here rich people driving Lambos around town don't make the Lambos uncool, but make rich people who buy hypercars to showcase their status uncool.

The only people round here (to mean "within a 50 mile radius" - I've never seen one within 5 miles of here) to buy Ferraris or Lamborghinis are footballers.

Nuff said.

I think it's kind of a waste of input on these threads to attribute "coolness" to what anyone else would think (especially the general public), but that's just me.

As for why a supercar would be uncool, I think niky put it best. They tend to be try-hard machines, built to impress rather than being an honest driver's car with "super" performance abilities. They're the automotive equivalent of a try-hard douchebag in a snazzy outfit, without even considering who's behind the wheel.

The Ford GT being a notable exception to this (IMO) is the reason for my Cool vote. In classic american-performance-car fashion, it wasn't that terribly expensive, and it outperformed other cars that were.

It's interesting, the cultural differences. At least here in Colorado, supercars are respected and viewed with almost reverence. Seeing one in public usually draws ooooohs and aaaahs for the public, and it's the car that's in the spotlight, not the driver. They are usually never seen as ostentatious displays of wealth shoved in the faces of the less fortunate. But almost seen as art on wheels, something for the young to respect and aspire to.

Here too.

My clueless friends, everytime they see one, they go "wow! Look at that!". Even for a petrolhead like me. Some people look at them (drivers) like "Smug... He owns a Ferrari... He thinks he's better than anyone", but people stand amazed at the car. If I ever pulled up in a McLaren, for example, people race to know me and ask me to take pics and other sorts of stuff.

Ah, the street. There's the rub. Do we take the opinions of the One Direction / Twitter / Facebook crowd as an indication of coolness, though... Hmmm... :D

Opinions on coolness, personally, can be affected by what cool people think. Of course, supercar owners are almost universally uncool, so their opinion on the 2002 is also suspect.

Sub-Zero all day long. Only seen two in the flesh and sat in the drivers seat in one and as soon as I looked in the rear view mirror and saw the supercharger peaking thru the little window in the back. Damn!

Yes it's not an original racer and it's like a reboot of a great TV show thats never quite the same but it's still awesome nonetheless!

Purely on the looks, I prefer it to the original. It just looks and sounds so good it can't be anything but SZ.

It's one of very very few cars I've ever had a pic of as my wallpaper, that wasn't a BMW

Where I live, the whole revere the car as art happens to cars like the Mustang, if one of these showed up, I'm not sure what would happen

Sub Zero from me. Arguably more elegant and better-proportioned than its grandaddy, and a true supercar without an ounce of fat on it. Annoyingly rare here though, never seen one :(

Oh this is my fave colour, and was an early publicity shot:

I have to admit that I love the "new" Ford GT, but it can't stand up to its namesake as far as coolness goes. So? Cool.
