Eh. The 4L60 always could have used another gear between 3rd and 4th, but I've never been a fan of the 6 speed that GM hooked up to small blocks at the time so I don't think beyond the principle of having it as an option offering a stick in a car like this would have actually improved it.

This, and the market space that it occupied had no manuals as an option anyway.

Like the Calais it's based on the Senator was the luxury model of the group, with the Statesman-based Grange being a long-wheelbase version of it.
 
Asking for a manual option in a full-sized luxury(?) sedan is sort of like asking for a manual FM tuning knob on a high-end home entertainment system. Sure, it'd help if you like listening to broadcast radio, but most people buying those things don't.
 
Who walked away from that design and said 'yeah, that's about right'.

Apart from being a heavy, underpowered, big engine barge, truck of a car, its insanely ugly.

Seriously uncool.
