I like electric cars, but the Leaf is uncool.

I don't mind the styling, but it's hardly attractive, and the car just feels a little too bland for coolness. A Renault Zoe is cooler - neater styling, more chic, and an e-Golf is the one to have if you don't want to shout about driving an EV.

Can't argue with the Leaf's popularity though. While it's hardly selling like a regular combustion equivalent might, 200k+ units worldwide in five years isn't exactly the flop some were expecting either. That's 200k people not driving around in combustion cars thanks to one car alone
It might have had price cuts from a near £30k starting price, but a 150 mile range simply doesn't justify choosing this over something like a Golf diesel.
Given what's happened at VW over the past six months or so I'd say you'd be justified in choosing anything over a Golf diesel.

The Leaf was the first relatively normal looking mass-produced full-electric car. When the other options for those who wanted specifically a car that got its movement exclusively from electric motor were either egg-shaped or had a petrol engine to keep the electric bits working, the Nissan almost looked like it could have been any Japanese hatchback. Not that looking like any Japanese hatchback the greatest compliment you can give to a car and they're hardly ever cool, but in a car park the Leaf hardly stands out from the other cars.

It's neither cool or Uncool. It's just a small, electric comuter car. It can be either interesting and meh at the same time. Interesting drivetrain but not much else, it's just a car, I think. Meh

It's pretty average, but I think being electric bumps it more towards the cool end of the spectrum.

Consumer white goods.

Meh.

And it's nothing to do with being electric. The iMIEV is electric, and it's sort of funky and fun. The Tesla is electric, and it's desirable. The Leaf is just... a car.

A very important car.

A car that shows that electric vehicles can serve as perfectly ordinary daily drivers.

The Corolla of EVs, if you will.

-

But the Corolla isn't cool. And neither is this.

nowhere near as nice as a Tesla.
Nowhere near as expensive either.

But as we've seen on the earlier Cool Wall threads neither the price nor the age of a car make a difference as long as the car is powered by electric motors because it's fairly general knowledge that the only people who might consider buying an electric car are those with unlimited money source.

I'm not sure that's really the case. The reason something like the Leaf sells at all is because it is relatively affordable - most people buy new cars on finance anyway, and the finance cost difference between a Leaf and something like a Golf is pretty small, and when you throw fuel costs into the bargain the EV tends to be cheaper still.

I certainly don't have an unlimited money source but used EVs are even creeping down to the point where I can almost pay cash for one.

Sarcasm aside, I'm not sure I could have put that better myself.

It's one of the most notable reasons why I'm sort of baffled by the Tesla comparisons we've seen here. The Leaf costs approximately half of what the basic version of the Model S, bit less in fact, but so far I've only seen people comparing electric cars in this manner while I'm quite sure most of those people wouldn't expect a Volkswagen Polo to be anywhere near as 'nice' as a BMW 3-Series.

Cue the "it's an automatic hybrid so it's automatically crap" brigade.

I don't mind the styling but it's just not practical for where I live. For the right person, I'm sure it's great.

Going for meh.

This is almost exactly how I feel. I like the styling, I like the idea. But it wouldn't work in my situation. Just an example; to pick up my daughter, it's now a four hour round trip. Her softball game trips can be even longer. In fact, just to get to the next major city is an two hour round trip. I like electric cars a lot. But I couldn't own one even if my money was unlimited. I like it, but the practically of it brings my vote down. Solid meh.

Meh for this. I mean it's at least better than the Prius performance and styling wise IMO. Not to mention the Nismo RC version of this.

I'm still awaiting for this car to appear in GTS and I can finally have my dream match. Prius Touring Car vs Leaf NISMO RC.
