In the interest of doing something fun, I've decided to quickly throw together another "Best Car" thread series with the intent of focusing on green cars and trucks that are quite literally coming out of the woodwork as we speak. The idea was spurred by the coverage of this year's Geneva show, everyone putting out some kind of hybrid, diesel, electric, whatever car to bring new buyers into showrooms, and to peak interest in their brand on the whole. This is where we honor them.

The first thread will focus on diesel power, and the various models that are using this old-school powerplant to drive fuel economy through the roof, all at a limited cost to the consumer when checking the option boxes. Here in the US, diesel power is slowly beginning to creep into dealer lots, while in much of the rest of the world, its more common than regular gasoline-powered cars and trucks.

The main requirements:
- Must be a 2009 or 2010 model
- Must be diesel powered
- No limit on model type, style, power output, etc

(Please) Do not:
- Make this a referendum on fuel prices
- Poor choices made in a given country
- Attack diesel as a poor performance choice

There will also be later threads on Hybrid setups, electric setups, and "other" (which will likely include Hydrogen, solar and highly modified gasoline vehicles).

My personal nomination for "Best Diesel Car:"

The 2009 BMW 335d

Okay, its expensive. At over $44,000 it certainly costs a pretty penny, more than the "regular" 335i as it is. But, when we're talking about 425 lb-ft of torque, and an as-tested average of 28 MPG from even C&D's leadfoot, thats an impressive feat. Not to mention that it can handle just as well as most sport sedans in its class, keep pace around a track, and run all the way back home on the highway pulling down 36+ MPG on the highway.

But putting all that aside, the 335d is important for several reasons:

1) Its the first diesel car that BMW has sold in the US since the '80s
2) For BMW to be doing it, that's HUGE (outside of HD trucks, only VW and Mercedes offer diesel vehicles in the US)
3) Should the idea catch on for diesel-powered 3-series models, my guess is that there won't be any reason for any company to not have the same successes placing a similar powerplant in their own cars and trucks (BMW is offering a diesel X5 as well).

So, in the end, I'm nominating the car that can change things. There are more obvious answers out there, and I likely should have chosen them, but considering how little fanfare has been given out for this car, I think it deserves a bit more attention.

Doesn't that make this a rather boring nomination thread? Maybe not if this is a world wide deal...

Anyway... I vote for the TDI Jetta. It's actually cool and it's very economical.

Was thinking of going for the Trident Iceni, but as that's still vaporware, I'm still mulling my choice.

Why amazing-> Just look at it, a Honda that is not all-fuglified! A Honda wagon! :dopey:

Why disappointing-> Not in the US and in the Philippines, maybe too good to be in either of these markets. Instead we get another upcoming fuglified Honda crossover. :grumpy:
 
Okay... I was going to vote for something I'd driven... the Focus TDCi DSG... because the combination of DSG and diesel is absolutely perfect for daily use... but I'm going to go extremely left-field here...

Since the requirements don't state the number of wheels...

The Track T800CDI. Yes, T800 could stand for terminator, and it looks it. 50bhp, does 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds and gets over 90 mpg (US).

Available with CVT and two-wheel drive. It'll take you anywhere, drink anything and go decently fast, too (180 km/h top speed... which is pretty fast for an off-roader).

Does Ford call their system DSG? I would see VW not being too happy about that. Speaking of DSG, the Polo Bluemotion would be a good nomination as well I think.
 
They call it Powershift. It's a great box on its own, but it really doesn't want to involve the driver in the process... no paddle-shift and the +/- option plays it safe... upshifting for you if you bounce off the limiter and downshifting for you automatically as you slow down.

My dad's car and it's a blast to drive. Torque city. And we get 30-35mpg.
 
The AC Schnitzer ACS1 Sport Eco (based on the BMW 118d)

Full details here (pdf file) but briefly:

Over 60mpg (UK mpg), 119g/km of CO2, 171bhp (28bhp up on standard), 265lb ft of torque (44 up on standard), and rides better on 18" wheels than the standard 118d does on 16" because it has normal tyres and not run-flats.

Most car enthusiasts are really only ever going to go green if the cars are fun and interesting. So much as I'm the sort of person who's more likely to nominate a Polo Bluemotion as it's even more efficient (though I was tempted to nominate the one based on the brand new unreleased Polo), the Schnitzer is a car to appeal to eco tech fans like myself and those of a powwwwaaaahh! disposition.

I'm surprised by the number of BMWs!

Too bad that Honda Accord diesel we've been promised hasn't shown up yet...

They do have a great range of diesels. In both senses of the word "great". One for almost any pocket, especially if you take the MINI D into consideration too.
 
^^^ I'm not sure semis fall under the same "truck" category YSSMAN was thinking. Although those 350 hp 12L I6s with 1500 lb-ft of torque (or whatever they're running now) do sound pretty awesome.

Sounds a lot like the Volkswagen unit. Is there a way to shift it manually using the console shifter? I hardly ever use my paddle shifters anymore anyway.
 
Yeah. The typical +/- arrangement on the stick. It's okay, but I wish it was a little less nannying. The shift quality itself, though, is epic... veeeery smooth.
 
Just to *bump* the thread, I've added a poll with the nominations so we can start pooling things together for the final diesel vs hybrid vs electric vs "wildcard" showdown.
 
The Merc. True luxury and comfort with enough performance to put a smile on your face while you save a tiny bit of $$$ over the petrol model.

I really should have voted for the 123d... but that 3.5 liter twin turbo in the BMW is epic.

Actually, all BMW diesels are nice... very linear, with huge grunt down low, but very little of that high-end wheeziness that typifies powerful diesels.

Now if only they revved just 1000 rpm more... :D

We've done it before, with great success! We had the 911 take it a few years ago, the R8 doing it this past summer. Its just a fun little thing I do to waste time, and nothing else. 'Scientific" has nothing to do with it.

I voted for the Jetta. No surprise there. I'm sure it'll also be a better car in terms of the impact it'll have. The 335 is awfully appealing, but how many regular 335s do you see around?
 
I wonder what kind of numbers we will see when someone starts seriously modifying the 123d. twinturbo four cylinder diesel, and 204bhp with insane torque as it is, in a relatively light chassis according todays standards.. :drool: Powersmoke will probably annoy the hell out of others. :D
 
I voted for the Schnitzer that I nominated. Still seems like the best mix of efficiency/performance/fun out of any of the above.
