I'm not sure if this is in the right category, sorry if not.

but I'm running really low on cash, and I want the GTPEDIA, is it worth getting? I have like £30 left and I don't wanna get something what isn't worth it. :nervous:

I think it's worth getting and I don't even have it yet.

It sounds amazing. Everything from GT1-GT5 and free updates (downloaded GTPedia version). It would be endless and interesting. Things you didn't know about GT and what you missed or just reading about GT is all in there.

To be honest it's your choice if you want to get it. But it is worth getting if you want to know more about GT5; car data, track list etc...

Read the free sample chapter and see if you like it.

Its worth it if you feel you can benefit from it. I don't have it, just do to the fact of updates, I want a final product so I'll wait. I'm only interested in the book version, if the book doesn't get updated as well, its not for me.

No. I doubt that you can't find any of that content through a Google search.
It's certainly true that a lot of the data is Googleable in principle - that's the nature both of the data and of Google - but not all of it is and that's rather not the point of it in any case. The point is that you don't have to.

Personally, I'm a big fan of physical books (less so eBooks - but the purpose is largely similar) of this kind because the information is effortless. You don't need to work out the precise search phrase to filter useless results, you don't need access to the internet and with the physical book you don't need either access to your device or in fact any electricity. You pick the book up, flick to the right section (it's on the top of every page) and flick to the right page of it. With the PDF, you open it on whatever device and CTRL+F your word. It's the entirety of the internet about Gran Turismo without any pages referring to Maserati (except the GT5 car list) and without returning race series or Porsches for GT1, GT2 or GT3...

With a Notepad file or, better still, pen and paper, you can have the book plan your route through the game. You can read it on the bog or in bed and there's no trolls telling you how to play your game, asking silly questions or posting indecipherable gibberish (though my in-laws think the entire book is gibberish).

There's limitations though. We've had to choose a baseline update for the data in GT5 - a point at which anyone with the game* can pop the disc in and see those numbers. The game can be updated in a trice but we can't recall and reprint books, which means that much of the XP/cr scores in the GT5 events section is quantitatively outdated if you're a keen player and have a properly updated game. We've had to do something similar for the car list, but for consistency we've kept the values as of each car's first appearance with exceptions where the data was updated with corrections (Spyker C8 drivetrain, VW Beetle 1200 weight) or where the guide's functionality would be compromised (NASCAR stock car levels). There's also no images because there are heavy legal question marks over using game-generated images in this manner.

Ultimately, it's worth it if it's worth it to you. While we've made errors - the majority of which (about fifty unique data errors in around three quarters of a million data points) have come about from mis-pasting data into a .doc file from a .xls file and from reformatting it - we've gone to a lot of effort (2 years of it generating entirely new data to our own standards) to ensure the data is correct, whereas the data you can Google has no such effort behind it. Purchasers are entitled to free .pdf updates (the first of which is complete right now - I was just proof-reading it when I saw this thread :D ) that correct the errors.

We're also now offering free international shipping for anyone who buys the combo pack of book and PDF, so you get the advantages of the physical book, the advantages of the eBook and you're not stung for $20 getting the paper version to your door (which was a pain).

But then I would say that :D

*The releases of physical disc versions of Spec 2.0, XL, Academy Edition and 2013 mean that it's no longer anyone, but still most people

When GT5 is finished and there's no further updates, the book will be finished - the car list literally changes with each update (at the very least, levels of existing cars are changed even if DLC isn't added). I'm just thankful we never went with a base PP list

Updates are a bit of a pest for that - but if you've ever played GT5 v1.00 (and I've had to for GTPEDIA), you'll appreciate what they can do for a game :D

And then GT6 will come out and the book will cease to be a final product again...

Oh god, I can imagine if you did do the PP list... I'm actually thinking of buying this book, especially considering all the hard work that got in it... ;)

I've decided not to buy it as I really doubt I'll learn anything useful that I don't already know.

Really? I just bought the ebook a month ago because I didn't want to pay for shipping to Canuckistan :(

Here is my answer on the subject.

No. I doubt that you can't find any of that content through a Google search.

It is obvious that a ton of blood, sweat and tears went into it, so I can imagine the great sense of accomplishment that Mr. Greer and Mr. Evans must have felt when they finally completed the book.

^^^This is what I said in my review of the book. You won't find that in Google.

Hi I am considering purchasing a hard copy or ebook, does the book have pictures of all the cars?
I'm a visual person and would recognise a particular car by a picture and then look at the specs, would be awesome.

According to this:

Free GT6 Chapter Coming Jan. 2014
The biggest game in the history of the Gran Turismo series is finally here. Featuring over 1,200 cars and dozens of major new features, this game is unlike anything seen before. GTPEDIA will be covering it all, with an entirely new Gran Turismo 6 chapter as a FREE downloadable update for everyone who owns a copy of the book.

So yes, at least the GT6 addendum is coming.

I have a friend who has it and it does prove useful. I myself am not a big reader and would rather spend my time playing the game than reading however it does prove useful on those odd occasions where you need to know something about the game that you can lookup in the book. You can however find a lot of this info using google or youtube, its just a matter of conveniency I suppose.
