1. in the uk it is vastly different, its around £60+ for a decent airbrush kits and paint is around £5 a pot (from local model store and that isnt even a big one!)

2. being more detailed again questionable as a carrera GT doesnt have as much "exposed" details as a 60's/70's muscle car then again you also have to remember that not every car is built in kit form that someone may wish to collect,i mean show me a 1979 torana a9x kit for example.

3. No offence to you as it is a stunning model and i regularly take part in IPMS (International Plastic Model Society) shows and have seen these kind of models in real life and they are stunning but most dont even come close to the details of ready builts,it is a shame though that the build kits do seem to be dieing out :(

1. That's unfortunate, as it prevents people from getting into the plastic building hobby...

2. True, although you should see some of the finished kits some people build of the Tamiya 1:24 CGT, absolutely flawless. If they're also a good photographer, sometimes you can't tell it's even a model.

3. No offense taken, thanks for the compliments! Alot of people pay lots of money to make their models look nice, and by that I mean they buy all these special resin parts, pre-made brake calipers, photoetch stuff, etc... It's a shame. In some cases these people spend over $300 on one model! I don't consider myself an expert model car maker; I'm an amateur at best... I just put a LOT of time into making the most important parts look as realistic as possible.

And thank you for providing a friendly debate, it's been awhile since I've seen anyone able to debate without getting angry and defensive. :)

no problem :D i do have nothing but the upmost respect for plastic modellers having seen some of the models in real life,at the last glasgow show there was a guy who spent 6 years(!) building a model that was from finding pictures on the internet, drawing up the plans then creating the model as there wasnt and still isnt a kit for it.Again with most of the model stores ive been in there has only been a handful of plastic kits, the market seems to be dominated by uboats, ships and planes.

came across this one a couple of weeks ago and still in awe everytime i see it.

Well for me 1/18 is the perfect scale, not too small like 1/24 and not to big like 1/12. Also while I have seen many kits not available in diecast 1/18 scale there are also many cars that are only available in 1/18 diecast. Also for the most part many more premium diecasts $60+ tend to have more detail than most people are willing to put into a kit. Also all the working features many 1/18's have amuse me, such as working steering, opening doors/hood/trunk, sometimes working suspension, and tons of other little things. Take my Highway 61 Dodge Challenger T/A, which I paid $60 (not including tax/shipping). It has opening doors/hood, moving front seats, opening glove box, movable sun visors, opening gas door, rotatable drive shaft, working suspension, working hood pins, spring loaded hood, extendable antenna, fully wired/plumbed engine, fabric seat belts, carpeted floor, and photoetched metal parts. I swapped out the stock wheels also.

And another very detailed model, my $100 AutoArt Mazda 787B:
(no engine shots at the moment)

^ Also has many of the same features of the Challenger, such as working metal (gasp) suspension, fully detailed engine, tons of photoetched parts, rotating disks with static calipers (like all AA models and most other more expensive brands), fabric seatbelts, soft to the touch seat, rubbery feeling steering wheel, real rack and pinion steering, photoetched metal radiators, and lots of other neat little details that are awesome. And remember, even this is nothing compared to a diecast (well, not exactly diecast...) CMC model. Their models are just... wow (both price and detail). Same goes for many Exoto models which are also even better than my 787B.

Also lazyness is indeed a factor, and it would take forever to build the 107 (now 108) models I have if they were all kits. That would be a LOT of paint, glue, and other supplies lol. Another thing is I don't enjoy painting a whole lot, at least not with cars. I will build a plastic kit of a aircraft though. But with cars, I plan on sticking with 1/18 diecast as my primary focus.

As amazing as model cars, trains, & planes can be, I am always fascinated with these military boat models. The detail is amazing! Reminds me a lot of that Aircraft Carrier model from a year or so back.

Anyways, I have 5 models coming in tomorrow, and 1 of them is an AutoArt Carrera GT in Fayence Yellow.

No, but I will soon. These 5 are part of my presents. They were just ordered at the last minute though from Pro-Models.com. Coincidentally, I wish the Porsche was there as they don't charge tax.

i think if you email them then can take off the tax for you if they dont do it automaticly(im in the eu so its still taxed but ordering from australia they take off the tax for me)

I might do that when the time comes. Currently, a 1:43 Pilot F40LM has been grabbing my attention lately.

I'm surprised and somewhat disappointed in how many people just buy their models... I can buy a kit and build one to be many times more detailed than any Minichamps or UT diecast at half the cost. It will look just as good when finished, and I get the satisfaction of doing it myself!

I'm not trying to be an elitist or cut anyone down at all; you do what works for you of course. I also understand that many people just simply don't have the time to build a kit (50+ hours for 1:12 scale!, 30+ for 1:24). I'm just saying you all should try and build one if you haven't already.

Using the link provided above for the Minichamps Carerra GT, I'm still on top by almost $20, plus my model is 1:12 and that is 1:18, not to mention mine is far more detailed. The negative aspect is I am down about 50 hours, but I think the pride of workmanship is worth that, at least to me. However, pride of workmanship might not be worth 50 hours of your life. In that case, continue to purchase built models. It is whatever works for you. Some people just want something to display; I understand that as I also used to buy 1:18. :)
I wouldn't go as far as saying it's far more detailed. Looking at some of the paint quality and detailing on some of my autoart's, I think it would take a LOT of work to beat it in detail, not to mention a model like Exoto Sauber C9, but then that wouldn't be a fair comparison.

You also need to remember not all of us want 1/12 or 1/24 scale. I grew up with 1/18, so I stuck with that. I wouldn't have room for anywhere near as many cars in 1/12 in my collection, and with 1/24, I bet it would be even harder to get something more detailed.

Anyway I have all the respect for people who make their own models. I personally don't have the time nor the tools (though I'm sure I could buy them) to do models like this. However, I do think that saying the 1/12s are far more detailed is a bit far fetched. All the 1/12 models I've seen that are very detailed as in Exoto levels of detail take a LOT of work to do. For example, with the 50 hours of work that you do and the tools you work with, do you think you could get a F1 model like this one with same quality of paint finish?

If you can, then hat's off to you. 👍

As for trying a kit myself, as I said I really don't have the time, but I wouldn't mind trying just 1 1/12 kit, probably some F1 car that I don't have in my 1/18 collection. I'd have to see how much the tools are though to see if I can afford it.

That ship/sub is just AWESOME.:bowdown:

Looks a lot like the U-Boat from Das Boot.

The painting itself for that model would take about 25 hours to shoot the paint right and refinish for that sort of paintjob. It is a very nice paint job! The time spent would also include a nightmare of decals! :D

Tamiya makes some very nice 1:20 classic F1 cars that I was thinking of trying out at some point in the near future.

Exoto makes some beautiful diecasts, that much I know for sure. It would probably take 100 hours to equal the quality of some of their models.

My next project is the Tamiya Porsche 959, I'm going to make it as super-detailed as I can. Look for it in about 3 weeks. :D

Examples of other people's work that is much better than mine ;)

Wee, Carrera GT came! :D
Excuse the crappy pics though, it is cold and wet outside

The rear suspension is sweet, because you can actually see the pushrods move the coil springs. The leather seats are also pretty sweet. :)

Ok boys I have a dilemma. £50 for a model road car. Something fast with reputation.
So far my choices are:
HW Elite F40 - Red £42.99
J2925_w_06_m6_h.jpg

Kyosho Ferrari 365 GT4/BB - Black / Black (Red interior) £43.99
ky08173k.jpg

HW Elite Ferrari 288 GTO - Yellow - £43.99

OR

AUTOart Porsche Carrera GT in Yellow - £53.99

I'm split. Any ideas?

You must get the nicest looking car ever, although it looks in better in red.

288 GTO, in case you didn't know...

I agree it's mighty fine looking, I'll take a look to see if I can find it in red :)

Thanks for advice so far 👍

EDIT:

Or these:

From gplegends

Ferrari fxx red / black wheels £48.99

Kyosho F40!

Oh and the 288 GTO can be bought for less on eBay. It isn't worth the £40 price tag.

Ebay's a problem. I wont go into why but I cant get the model of there.

Why you are considering the HW Elite F40 when the Kyosho pwns the sweet prancing pony off it is beyond me.

I wouldnt mind a uk online shop or real life shop that stocks them. :) (Not Ebay as stated)

edit: found a way I can EBay it now, Kyosho F40 it is.

I'm considering waiting a bit for the Kyosho F40 lightweight, availability is 1-3 months.

Ok guys I got another question...

Where should I go if i wanted to buy a 1:72 (ish) scale diecast model airplane? (Metal/already built)

Particularly a F-22 Raptor :)
