I told myself to only buy 1/18s if I will modify them. I told myself this because I feared I would spend until the wallet goes dry.

Today I bought two cars at a flea market. Two Bburagos. The boxes were in horrid condition. The old dude was listing them for $45, but again, everything did not even look presentable. The models were not screwed into their base, the plastic sheet cover from the box was yellowed and the adhesive peeled off.

Some of the decals on the F40 were unfortunately peeling, and I can't see myself being able to restore this. But I couldn't take my eyes off the wheels and how much went into assembling the engine. You wouldn't believe me, but when I pointed out where the decal was peeling, this man licked his finger and actually tried to burnish the edge of the decal with the edge of his fingernail. Wow. I can't believe I still purchased it after witnessing this, not to mention him ripping the box trying to take the car out to show it to me. But to close up that case, I will have to scrap all the decals and plan a plain-body repaint in the future.

The E-Type looked fine overall, but the biggest deal-breaker was the chipped edges along the edge of the door line. This can be fixed, but it just means a repaint is enqueue. And a repaint means I lose the license plate stickers. The colour of the body isn't bad, but it wasn't impressing me. I'll definitely repaint it with leftover paint I have from painting this tiny toy:

So why did I still buy them despite all the imperfections (and germs) that are on it? Guy was willing to discount me $10 per car. $35 a Bburago. Not bad considering $30 about the price he most likely bought them for. With tax here, he probably only profited $2.2 off me. But the drawback is that I have crappy packaging to live with. That won't stop me from acquiring a display case though.

But... what about the formula to making a beast Skyline? Surely you have heard of it.

@AOS- I'm not the biggest fan of modified Hakosuka Skylines. When the "stock" is little bit tweaked, that's probably where I'd prefer to keep it. That's just me.

As for news on that RX-7, no progress has been made due to school work and unproductive attitude. I think once I get past fixing the damn front bumper, there will be enough momentum to finish everything else.

@AOS- I'm not the biggest fan of modified Hakosuka Skylines. When the "stock" is little bit tweaked, that's probably where I'd prefer to keep it. That's just me.

Just playin' with ya. I understand the beauty of stock vintage vehicles. I'm just a bit spoiled on the modified JDM appeal for the time being. :p
 
I was browsing that other forum about the big boy diecasts, learned of Exoto, browsed their website and holy mother of god was I blown away.

What's the usual amount I can expect to pay for a 1/18 and where are some good websites to find one (other than eBay)?

They stopped slot of 3 party sellers a while ago.

If you think exoto are good look at cmc, more affordable too.
 
So far, Exoto and CMC are on my top tier list of brands (that I currently know of). On Exoto's site, in their product line, there's a $750 Jaguar D-Type, but in the "Factory Store" category, it appears to be a bunch of discounted items with prices below $300, which got me wondering if that's the price range I can expect to find an Exoto for.

If you think cmc and exoto are too Tier don't look up amalgam.
 
I'll be only interested in 1:18s for the time being. Are there any other similar-quality brands or slightly lesser-quality brands you'd personally recommend?

I'm a member. And like with all other sales, I will miss that one, too. Thank you Mattel for the website you need to be a hacker to navigate through, and also holding all high profile sale at 9am on Tuesday. People don't have jobs or anything. :(

Funny. I found Carmodelz 7 minutes ago and they do in fact have the R32 and a Hakosuka I'd like to have. As for the Fairlady, I haven't settled on whether I want the S30 or the 240ZG yet. Thanks for sharing!

Ok, joke aside, I require more pictures of that, and I'm sure that most people here would agree with that idea. Man, why does the 4C have to get scale models that are either too hard to find (in my area, that is. Despite being more common, I can't find either the Siku or the Matchbox 1:64 models so far on any given store) or too expensive (like the above example, AUTOart's wonderful 1:18 rendition)?

Well, congrats on a very handsome purchase, may you put it in a proper place, one where it can stand out as it should. 👍

Rob who runs car modelz is very good and if you ask nicely you can get a 5% discount.
 
That's good to know, because I finally caved and ordered 3 Nissans.

I better get to work selling my other cars now. (long face)

Then you went over to the 'Hotwheels' thread about 5 years ago and surprised the heck out of everybody there (especially Cano.)

Hot Wheels was so easy to get into because of the accessibility of cars at accessible prices. I got carried away in that for 3-4 years, and here I am looking to rid about half the collection I had built up.

You have to remember you were much younger then - and now that you're older, better-heeled. But don't spend all your money at once. :lol: You know what happens when the authentic die-cast bug hits - especially with the bigger cars; they can cost an arm, a leg and a few teeth, too.

I believe, though, that judicious collectors also look for used cars - sometimes one can find a steal in good condition.
