GT's evolution - do you like KY's vision as it comes in to focus?

In the earlier iterations of GT, the games were limited by technology in regards to what could have been implemented.

Now that the technology has more or less caught up with Kaz's vision for GT and we truly begin to see where he wants to take the series (car and color collecting as opposed to outright racing), do you like where it's heading?

Or would you like a simpler, more focused approach of the earlier versions with a lot more content?

That's not a question dude, you are just giving your own answer. Is this Jeopardy?

He's asking an open-ended question to spark a conversation. This is a discussion forum.

What's wrong with you? :indiff:

I think the game has evolved in a great way, but I don't think they have come close to the potential it has.

I enjoy the features they have now compared to GT1-2 but I wish they would have focused on the details more and perfected them instead of throwing it together. I know the game wasnt just thrown together, but it has that feeling when playing certain parts.

I believe that's an oversimplification. GT5 is a very well-rounded game -- it does many things very well; physics, tuning, racing, collecting, photo modes, multiplayer, racetracks, museums, displays, galleries, etc...

I do like where the GT franchise is heading. All these things are what makes GT5 better than the previous games, at least in my opinion. GT5 stands out from other racing games because it is not one-dimensional like a lot of racing games nowadays. Driving sims and games that focus solely on racing feel very one-dimensional to me. They might have fun and engaging races, sure, but they don't really let you appreciate the car you're driving in. You race it around a track for a couple laps, move on to the next race, but the car is just a "tool" for winning races. But GT5 is the game for the person who loves cars and not just racing. That's why the physics are so refined, that's why there's so much emphasis on "car porn," collecting, tuning, details, graphics, etc. GT5 wouldn't nearly be the game it is now if the developers decided to focus 100% on racing.

I like many of the evolutions of the game, but my main gripe: how B-spec was made a separate mode.

The B-spec function should be improved and implemented the way it was in GT4, so that players who wanted to drive the whole way could do so, while players who don't could also let Bob drive during the endurance races.

I don't think GT5 really has a focus at all... there's a spattering of everything in the game (B-spec, NASCAR, F1, rally, karting, photomode, museum...) but the execution is not very good for any of them. You can't have extreme diversity and extreme quality at the same time, unless spending 12 years developing the game is somehow feasible. If you want to do something well, you should limit your scope. I think it would be best if GT kept itself focused on closed wheel circuit racing, domestic production cars and customization and left everything else to other developers.

I like the direction the game is moving, but it seems to be moving too fast for it's own good. They packed so many new features into this one game that none of them have the polish that they should. Most of the new features in this game feel like they're just there to "test the water" and find out what people think of them.
Hopefully in the next game, PD focuses more on refining the features that were introduced in GT5, and a little less time making all-new features for GT6.

In short, I like what the series is evolving into, I just feel it's evolving a little too quickly for it's own good.

GT5 is GT1 with better graphics (for 200 cars) and physics, there's no real ground breaking going on here. We've gotten the same basic thing 5 times.

I think the game aspect of GT is pretty outdated, or at least when comparing it to something like Forza 3 the UI and the online interactions seem better thought out than what GT5 offers.

I hope Kaz and PD take a closer look at what other sims are doing right so they try to implement such things to make a better game altogether, because as it stands out today GT5 is ahead in the feeling of the game but as a game in general I think it has fallen behind.

If the future of GT involves more useless features like B-spec, then no, I'm not liking the way the series is headed. B-spec in GT5 is getting more attention than it should. It's a separate game mode and it has it's own online portion. It needs to go back to the way it was in GT4 where it wasn't in the way.

I also read somewhere that Kaz wanted to put B-spec in GT3, but didn't have time. If this is true, thank God he didn't ruin that great game with this nonsense.

I no longer think KY has a vision, or is the gaming demi god I thought he was.

It's not a racing game. Needs more real tracks, more race cars/options to race modify road cars, more races and championships, an AI that adds to the fun instead of taking it away, and a better usage of racing licenses.

It's not a driving game. It doesn't have any cities or roads to "drive", not even a point-point course maker, and is too competitive to be a relaxed and laid-back driving game (everywhere there's a gold trophy you desire, or an achievement, or a chrono to beat).

It's not a car collecting game. It lacks customization options, has a very high percentage of uninteresting/outdated cars, and lacks options to personalize collections (like having a garage as a photomode location which you can visit, upgrade, and organize, like Project Gotham. Or the option to add user comments or notes like "With this car I beat Le Mans", "This is my custom car inspired on ________").

Kaz has the best console hardware, modellers with insane skills, the best non-pc driving physics, and enormous support from Sony and a loyal fanbase, yet he gave us this half-baked disappointing game that didn't live up to the hype, it's long development process, that has been compared to other games in the genre. This isn't what GT is supposed to be, a genre defining and untouchable title. It's now just a racing game, with pros and cons, and vulnerable to what EA and T10 want to throw at it.

I like the way it is heading. GT1 small game, GT2 bigger better game, GT3 small game, GT4 bigger better, GT5 small, GT6 Bigger and better.
Yes GT5 has 800 standard cars but look at it this way, GT5 has 200 cars and 800 bonus items. I expect a lot more premium cars in GT6 and an awful lot more tracks. Also I think all the new functions will be better (Paintshop > Livery editor? RM > All cars?)

It's taken 6 years to develop GT6, GT5 is just a portion of it and GT5:P was a taster.

I have one problem with Kaz's vision. If it's a GT game where are all the GT cars?

As a huge racing fan I'd really like the game to stay as close to it's racing heart as possible.

I'd like to see more licenced events, sure Nascar is great for Nascar fans but what about the other great racing series from across the world.

It would be wonderful if PD licenced series such as ALMS, or FIA GT1/3, the BTTC, British GT Championship and DTM, The Australian V8 series, WRC(with proper point to point stages) as well as of course the Japanese Super GT championship and started work on many of the real tracks/courses and cars.

I think if you want a "real" driving/racing simulator that's where to look to, of course with the car collecting a racing in road cars tagged on.

Alas, it will never happen GT5 will never quite be the game I want it to be, in fact I doubt there would ever be the perfect(in my opinion) combination of realistic racing sim with licenced championships and the more eclectic style of GT.

I don't like the way it's headed. The focus needs to be on creating a fun, engaging game, not an "encyclopedia of cars".

In that Top Gear Mag GT5 article just before GT5's release Kaz said that he wanted GT to become almost a 'Car Encyclopedia'. Except why were a lot of historically important cars missed out, or not premiums. Why no premium Jensen Interceptor FF (first 4WD), no Daimlier-Benz thingy (first ever car) and, well, I could go on.

I'd say GT is supposed to be both and that's why I love it. But it does none right at this moment, and that's what bothers me.

i wouldn't mind a spin off game. maybe something like GT:Raceday or something along those lines. just the best cars with no filler and more tracks with a focus more on racing.
i think it would be a nice little break from GT1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc. just something different before a GT6 comes along. something fun and not so tedious.

Yes. It's starting to look I won't be buying GT6 when it comes out in late 2017 (completly made up date)

I still believe in GT as the fan (and PS3 owner) I am, so I'll most likely buy GT6.

However, if GT6 is as disappointing as GT5 I won't be buying a PS4 in the future. Maybe it will be time to grow up and buy a high end pc for racing sims, or to eat a good amount of my words and get Forza 5 for the Xbox "720".

The disappointment in GT5 is my reason for not wanting GT6. Aspec was far too short, most of the online lobbies are annoying and the seasonals are too easy so they aren't great replacements. The cars in the game are pretty much the same as previous GT games (I own all of them except prolouge).

I will visit this forum when it comes out to see which direction GT6 takes but if it's an evolution of GT5 rather than reverting back to the style of the earlier games I know that I won't waste my money on it.

This is my first GT. I've not played any of the others. Several things I like about it and several I don't.

I do not prefer the focus on cars as opposed to the race. Especially when a) there are 30 Nissan Skylines in the game and b) they don't focus on authentic sounds for the various cars. I posted this on my review on Amazon, GT5 is about the cars, whereas other games like Grid are about the race. Grid may not have authentic physics but I can be in a hot an heavy and challenging race from the word go! With GT5 I've yet to have an intense battle to the wire. So it is very lacking when it comes to racing.

It's a lot of fun, especially the "true" physics and vastness of the offering.

Point on, on ALL points!

Just one thing to add. In part one of three in the GT5 Nurburgring video (youtube GT5 Nurb Part 1) Kaz made a statement as to what his goal was and that is "Grand". He threw so much into it to make it "Grand" it appears there was no real "plan" no real concept. Just a little of this and that. No INTEGRATION of the parts to make a well thought out whole.

Well shift 2 has learned me to appreciate GT more and more. And i was thinking about this the other day, and remembered him saying in an interview, he wanted to give us something cool. A driving simulator were you get to drive the coolest(note that word) cars. It is on GT tv, the GT anniversary, go check it out. Anyway, i was complaining before, with the lack of supercars, and it just hit me, the game has brought us some of the coolest and iconic cars ever created, the 787B, X2010, chapparal, ford gt40, F458, lexus LFA, the Corvettes, Lamborghini, pagani, Jaguar, Lotus, there all premiums! The list goes on and on. I think Kaz is indeed giving us his vision, and sharing his passion for cars and racing with the car loving community, and thats what GT is all about, the love of cars. And he is showing us this, with photo mode, and the incredible attention to detail with the premiums.

Come to think of it, I don't believe I have even lost a race in GT5... What fun is it if I always win? And no, I don't use overpowered cars either. I'd play online, but there are always players who always mess about and ruin the experience for me.

The special events and license tests are really the only things I found to be more of a challenge.

I've never had the time to sit and think about it, but now that I have, I've come to realize that GT5 really disappoints me in the racing department. The only things I do when I play it is grind, collect cars, drift a little and take photos. I've never once had an intense battle for 1st place with the AI, so when I enter races I feel like a robot myself, taking first all the time, playing mindlessly. BLAH, I need time to think of why I spent so much time doing all that :dunce:

Anywho, to get on topic about KY's vision(lol KY), I think he and PD need to step it up on GT6. I want an intense racing game with their physics and better customization as well.

I say GT6:
500 Premium cars(get rid of all useless and repeated cars)
40 real world tracks(with multiple variations)
All of their originals and city tracks+new ones
Livery editor
Full customization for cars
Intense and competitive AI
More A-spec, less B-spec
Better damage and crash physics
Better replay controls

I think if Kaz want to make a "car encyclopedia", he should make a spin-off game, adding over 1000 cars also having his free roam idea and let the next GT game be a full on racing experience.

Here's the deal with that. Lets say an A-spec race has a Typical Opponent list where the max HP is 500. You've got to tune your car down anywhere to 400-450Hp. The AI stinks when it comes to cornering so you'll beat the AI and gain time in the corners and lose time in the straightaways because you're so overpowered by the competition.

Have you ever played Race Driver Grid by codemasters? Hot and heavy racing from the start, with outstanding damage modeling. Kaz needs to steal their AI and damage Physics then GT6 will be the Bomb!

Grid indeed has an interesting AI. It's not too fast (as GT is sometimes, with almost magical über-lapping abilities and tire/fuel saving) or to slow (as GT is most of the time). It just adds to the fun, instead of taking it away, it gives you a heated battle that you can win quite easily, but you'll still feel the excitement. I want that.

I might be wrong since I've only played Grid some minutes at a friend's house, but when my copy arrives I might change opinions for the better or the worse.

I like where its going although I don't like the way games these days focus too heavily on multiplayer and neglect the single player experience, this seems to be the case with GT5 seeming to follow the likes of call of duty focusing heavily on online. I really couldn't see where they were going with it but of late since they fixed the last glitch I have found some quality rooms in the lobby and had some of the best closest races of my life so I am split about this, I loved GT4 as a game and dearly wanted the single player focus to continue which it seems to not have at present. Maybe in the future there will be some kind of dlc events or adding many more seasonals or even the promised online matchmaking that would seemingly complete the online portion.

GT5 is a huge disappointment for me. This game was the system seller for me. My old 60 gig fat died 3 hours into GT5 and I still persisted and got a slim 320.

But,

The game is very unorganized. We have two single player sections in A-Spec and Special Events. A-Spec is nothing more than a smattering of assorted races with random restrictions on the cars you can use (no more). There is a clear lack of any creativity with the amount of cars and tracks that they have. Even the AI could be forgiven if there was some thought put into the structure of A-Spec.

Special Events was a mixed bag for me. All of them were pretty much useless to me except the Grand Tour and Rally events. The Grand Tour is how a game should be designed. The Grand Tour felt like a career. If they had designed all of A-Spec around this Special Event with some nifty cutscenes, the experience would have been so much better.

Rally could have been better (the co-driver needs working on) but it was encouraging. The disappointment mainly stems from the fact that all of these small features have just been thrown in there without proper thought. Super GT, another wasted opportunity.

My next major gripe is the way they have handled the online section. I've been messing in photomode for the past 2 days and I decided to see if I could find any good races. Nope, its the same old ********. Enter a lobby, either the host goes to sleep or 9/10 times the race is in progress, wait for it to end and you have a 50-50 chance of the race starting again in a reasonable amount of time. If I make a new lobby myself, hardly anyone joins. This is very poor. If your single player is so bad, the multiplayer has to make up for it. And vice versa. You can't get away with both components being bad.

The only thing that keeps me hanging on to the game is photo mode. But if this is what the Gran Turismo name is all about, I'm afraid its an error of judgement on my part and I will skip GT6. I did buy GT4 and wasn't too impressed by it so I can't say I wasn't warned.
