Forgive my ignorance, but if the car doesn't exist, then how can its body be built out of aluminium?

Yes! FINALLY!
The answer was the Audi A2. With a 1.4L engine, the car was under 1500cc. This car is also known for getting ~120MPG in proper conditions, and was the first car to feature an all-aluminum chassis.
