I'm now trying to think what car Hugh Grant was driving when... hmm.
 
It's a reference to the car's name.

The manufacturer at the time was independent, but it's now part of a larger group.

Although, the layout of the rear lights does seem familiar.
 
I'm glad you mention the taillights, because it has a very distinctive lense design specific to this nameplate ;)

Indeed it is. A 1981 Nissan Skyline 2000GT Turbo EX.

The R30 was the only Skyline to be offered in a hatchback variant.
