Guests slow GTP far to much from members to get on. I think The Guests should register to view the forums.
And 1 more, all users with 1 post within a month should be deleted.
Thats all.

I'm pretty sure we're getting a faster server in a few days.

Yes, with the growth of GTP, Jordan has decided to take the financial plunge and buy a new dedicated server on which to host the planet.

Remember, guests are one of two things:
1. Members who haven't registered yet,
2. Search engine crawlers, which drive potential new members to the site.

And if you force people to register to view the site, it will make more non-active members, which you want deleted.

But more importantly, it will drive them away...

As Giles has already pointed out, guests are a valuable group of GTP's visitors. Once we move over to the new server I will try limiting the number of "bots" which, are the most demanding visitors on the server.

No. They were referring to the guests on GTP.

Search engines (like Google) are constantly trawling the web for new websites to add to their index of websites. How the search engines to this is by something called Bots. Bots are like little explorers for search engines. They explore the web for new websites, and if they find one, they add it to a big list of web sites.

Bots are constantly visiting GTP to see if the website has changed or if there are any new pages. These Bots are referred to as Guests on GTPlanet, and that's why there are always so many guests.

Well, then the bots should be eradicated, they are giving me a bad name :D

Well, if the bots are eradicated, then GTPlanet would not show up in any search results. This would mean there would be no new members coming in.

However, I remember reading somewhere that there is a certain <meta> tag that you can add to the HTML of a page that tells bots when to return to the site. So, you can set them to return once every 1 week or something.

That then would be declared defunked and bad. . . I guess there is no winning solution for this problem then :(

Ah, but yes, there is. A bot in itself is not a problem, it is when there are many bots (like, 30) visiting the site at once is when the site is bogged down. I have found a way (I think) to limit the number of bots from a search engine, and I will try it out once we are on the new server.

Any idea when that will be?

Hopefully you wont get sidetracked this time...
No, I'm not putting any time frame on it now. And don't accuse me of getting sidetracked. I had a planned vacation, and I did the very best that I could to try and get the site moved over to the new server before I left. But, naturally, as with anything I do with the server, anything and everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong, and therefore made the transition before the trip impossible.

I'll keep that in mind when people ask me "When's Jordan gonna update the server?" (and for some reason they ask it to me all the time )

I hate it when people say that, Jordan pays for a server for all of us to talk on, and we dont have to pay anything, we shouldnt even cry or whine when the server messes up, we dont pay for it.
