For the aspiring guitarists out there, what make of guitar do you own and details and pictures of them if you have. Air guitarists are welcome as well with their tennis rackets...., I mean guitars! ;) .

I own a Cack (left) handed Mexican Fender Stratocaster. Quite a new one. I did want a custom one, but it would of cost a hell of a lot and taken a long time to get it, especially considering I'm left handed!

I only own a couple of basses.

1.) Fender American Standard Jazz Bass 4-string
2.) Warwick Corvette Standard 5-string Fretless with active pickups.

I'll try and post some pic's tonight.

I have a black Gibson Les Paul Studio that I bought used about a year and a half ago, it was in mint condition and I got a sweet deal on it. I also have an Epiphone Les Paul that was my second guitar but I don't don't really play it that much 'cause I like the Gibson better.:D

I love Gibsons, but they're not as good as Fenders ;) :p j/k.
Have you got any pictures, I'd love to see them.
What are they like to play?

I've got a Gibson L6-S from about 1972. Picture a guitar built like a Strat but shaped like a Paul. It was cheap and fun to play. Unfortunately mine was painted red by the previous owner.

Nice guitar there Neon! Wish I had one of those. Electric guitars/bass guitars cost an arm and a leg over here, they're really expensive (RM 1040.00++).

However I did get myself a nice acoustic guitar about a week ago, and it's a nice beauty. You guys might have not heard of the make before, they're called 'Kapok' (well, it's a local made one anyway). The guitar is black in colour, and hopefully I could get at least one picture of it. But don't hope too much though.

EDIT : Speaking of guitars, I might as well ask this question. Did any bands/musicans influence you guys to buy a guitar and learn, or was it just self-interest in music? I have to say Metallica and Audioslave were two bands that has a strong influence on me, and I got the guitar because I wanted to play their songs :D

So, tell me your stories!

I play an Arianna, it's the same exact thing as a strat without the fender price tag. I'll probably put a pic up soon I just got a digital camera last night.

My last guitar was a Fender Jagstang. Body of a Jaguar and hardware of a Mustang.

I loved that thing but sold it a couple years ago. I just couldn't do without so now I have a Gretsch Jet.

This is a funny topic becaue I was just listening to some personal recordings on my way to work this morning and wondering why I ever stopped playing. :(

I started playing guitar because of Alex Lifeson. The rythym guitar in older Rush is exquisite. Of course over time my tastes broadened and so did my influences. But now I can see how Alex Lifeson was more influential than I ever realized when I used to play a lot.

I also dabbled with bass a little and got a cheap one to learn, which I also no longer own. The Danelectro Longhorn.

Longhorn.jpg

But mine was red and not an original vintage. It had a great, hollow, warm sound. And it was light. But it didn't stay in tune very well.

Danelectros are so freakin' cool though! What a surf instrument, six-string or bass. Rick Miller from Southern Culture On The Skids plays them, and he's hot.

Eh, basses: I was noodling with bass for a while, too, and I had one of these:

voxphbas.jpg

Vox Phantom IV. I tried for a long time to buy it from the guy who lent it to me, but he wouldn't sell it. Then like a month after I gave it back to him, he decided he hadn't missed it anyway and sold it to someone else. Bastid.

I had a guy loan me a Rickenbacker 4X12 amp. The thing was so awesome and rare. I kept trying to arrange to return it to him but he was flaky about it like he didn't want it back for a few months (we were in the same band but I left). Eventually I moved and we stopped contacting eachother. A year later I figured it was mine. Then he hunted me down and acted like I was trying to rip him off.

That VOX is cool.

He probably found out what a Rick cabinet amp is worth.

I also had a crappy hollowbody electric like an ES-175D knockoff from back in my "I want to be George Thorogood" days (about the time Move It On Over came out, while they were still the Delaware Destroyers). It was a Hagstrom or some other lousy brand; I don't even remember. It was like one of those things that
has tons of "features" but is so cheap that it has absolutely no quality at all. I bought it used and beat when I was like 17 and probably paid too much for it. I sold it to a guy I knew for about half just to get rid of the thing.

Hey you have/had some nice guitars there Neon Duke and Milefile. BTW Milefile what was your Fender Jagstang like (to play etc.). I haven't heard of one of them before.
Also your are a luky SOB for that amp. I would of changed my address name and all for that amp. Well Under 18 Carbon I'm sure you'll have the guitar you dream of one day and Koolsax I've heard of your Arianna and they're supposed to be alright.

I started playing through just listening to all my favourite bands and deciding I'd actually like to make music and play music like they do. SO I decided to play guitar. Also I had a heavy influence from my dad whoose played for about 30 years.

The electronics were very versatile. You could get a lot of sounds out of it. It was heavy and had a fairly narrow neck. I like the Gretsch better for that reason. The whammy bar was useless if you like to stay in tune. And from time to time I'd accidentally hit a switch while playing because they weren't placed very logically. But it had that vintage Fender sound that I loved so much. I played through a Fender DeVille 4X10.

That's why I like the L6-S. It has a 6-position pickup switch with different biases, phase differences between the pickups, etc. I can get the dry kind of Stratty sound, or I can get the typical Gibson sweathog kid of grunt, and a lot in between. The claim to fame for the guitar itself is that Carlos Santana plays one sometimes, and Bob Mothersbaugh from Devo. Can't say those two have influenced me that much - at least not together.
No, I'd say the thing that made me pick up a guitar and want to play it was hearing Thorogood's The Sky Is Crying - I still love bottleneck. I played tuned to an open 'E' for a while.

Alright, finally got my pics together, so here we go....

Here's my acoustic/electric cut-away that I mess around on.

This is my fretless 5-String. It has active electronics and a rich full tone contributed to the dark heavy wood which is characteristic of Babinga.

Here's my work horse. Can't really tell, but the finish is almost opaque. You can actually see the wood grain for the swamp ash below the White Blonde finish. This is my main money maker.

My "Number One" is my 20+ year old Alvarez Model 5013 Acoustic.
I bought it the day I graduated from Nursing School, in 1996, with cash given to me by my dad. The first time I saw it, I thought I was Martin. The first "G chord" I played, pretty much cinched the deal.
It's black with a fade to grey (like a sunburst). White binding on neck, headstock and body. I replaced the stock tuners with a set of gold Pings. My bridge pins are polished brass, and make the old girl really loud so I can play with Light Gauge strings. I also had a pair of Strap-Loks added so I can't drop it when I play in front of people.
The guitar I let the kids play is a mid-60's two pick-up Teisco Del Ray electric. It's shaped like an anemic Gibson 335. It's a Red sunburst, with a "roller-style" whammy. (I took the bar off to cut down on broken high E strings.
I used to play it more, but it doesn't stay in tune worth a darn, and with both pick-ups on you either get a really sweet tone or a really crappy tone. It depends on how you tilt your head.
The one I wish I'd kept was a mid-50's Kay acoustic Archtop.
It was sunburst, with 'F-holes', a neck like a baseball bat, and with the right strings and the floating bridge in just the right place a very sweet tone. It would have been a great guitar to learn a bit of slide on. I sold it because I had no room for it and I wasn't playing it much at all.:banghead:
There is also a four-string plectrum style banjo in my closet that used to belong to my wife's grandfather who played professionally. I keep telling myself that I'm gonna learn to play it. But I just don't think I'd look quite right playing a banjo.

That fret-less five string is awesome. Although it must be a pain to get used to at first. But, it's still really sweet. Just curious, what kind of strings do you guys use? I play with Dean Markley Blue Steel Reg. Size 10-46(.25-1.17mm). Those are the ones that are cryogenically activated. It makes them last longer and have a deeper tone. I really like the sound they make on my guitar. Ill put them in the pic too. I'll take it today.

Here's my acoustic that I like to play around with. It's an Eterna EC-12, I got it as a gift so I'm not complaining, it plays. I'm saving up to buy the guitar in my avatar, a Squier Affninity Stratocaster Limited Edition, painted in "Silverburst" with a pearl pickguard...Yeah..

under18carbon & koolsax:

Yeah, thanks guys...I really enjoy both basses quite a bit, they both have a different and distinctive tone all of their own, and definately have their place depending on what the song demands.

The fretless wasn't that hard for me, but I also learned how to play bass in Orchestra on an Upright Fretless bass, so I fell into this one fairly quickly.

Brand of strings? Roto's and DR's are the only two brands that last for any amount of time. .45 guage for me...

And Ryan, I'm saving up for a Ferrari just so you know.

Just kidding dude. Do you have a job so you can get the money or is it all allowance and mowing lawns? When I get back from Atlanta I start a job washing cars (professionally, detailing, etc.) its gonna be awesome!

I have to say there's some real nice peices of kit coming from you guys. I didn't realise so many of you played or owned.

I use fender strings (original 150 lights), mainly because I get them free or really cheap.

I want to learn acoustic now I've been laying electric for some time now, but I don't know what to start with. Any suggestion guys? My dad wants to get a right handed Martin or something, and he wants me to learn to play upside down (which i can do) so he can play it as well and add it to his collection.

Also if any of you guys have any recordings of you playing in a band or sololy it would be nice to hear from you.

BTW Kosmic Fool, I wouldn't quite know what would sound better, a ferrari on song or a Fender or Les Paul.
Personally I'd go for the guitar any day, plus I don't think my mum would be to happy with me substituting my guitar playing to listening to a Ferrari on full song. Hmm... I'll have to try that one....

Damn, Pako, you guys are tight! And I don't mean "tite" like the term is used nowadays. I mean tight like no wasted notes and really good understanding of each other. Nice!

It's been asked before, but is there a CD for sale?

Well, yeah..... Let's see....

You can pick up a copy of it right here.

Done! Free shipping r0x0rz! Thanks, man.
